    Control Software for the SST-1M Small-Size Telescope prototype for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The SST-1M is a 4-m Davies--Cotton atmospheric Cherenkov telescope optimized to provide gamma-ray sensitivity above a few TeV. The SST-1M is proposed as part of the Small-Size Telescope array for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the first prototype has already been deployed. The SST-1M control software of all subsystems (active mirror control, drive system, safety system, photo-detection plane, DigiCam, CCD cameras) and the whole telescope itself (master controller) uses the standard software design proposed for all CTA telescopes based on the ALMA Common Software (ACS) developed to control the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Each subsystem is represented by a separate ACS component, which handles the communication to and the operation of the subsystem. Interfacing with the actual hardware is performed via the OPC UA communication protocol, supported either natively by dedicated industrial standard servers (PLCs) or separate service applications developed to wrap lower level protocols (e.g. CAN bus, camera slow control) into OPC UA. Early operations of the telescope without the camera were already carried out.     Design, analysis and implementation of voltage sensor for power-constrained systems

    PhD ThesisThanks to an extensive effort by the global research community, the electronic technology has significantly matured over the last decade. This technology has enabled certain operations which humans could not otherwise easily perform. For instance, electronic systems can be used to perform sensing, monitoring and even control operations in environments such as outer space, underground, under the sea or even inside the human body. The main difficulty for electronics operating in these environments is access to a reliable and permanent source of energy. Using batteries as the immediate solution for this problem has helped to provide energy for limited periods of time; however, regular maintenance and replacement are required. Consequently, battery solutions fail wherever replacing them is not possible or operation for long periods is needed. For such cases, researchers have proposed harvesting ambient energy and converting it into an electrical form. An important issue with energy harvesters is that their operation and output power depend critically on the amount of energy they receive and because ambient energy often tends to be sporadic in nature, energy harvesters cannot produce stable or fixed levels of power all of the time. Therefore, electronic devices powered in this way must be capable of adapting their operation to the energy status of the harvester. To achieve this, information on the energy available for use is needed. This can be provided by a sensor capable of measuring voltage. However, stable and fixed voltage and time references are a prerequisite of most traditional voltage measurement devices, but these generally do not exist in energy harvesting environments. A further challenge is that such a sensor also needs to be powered by the energy harvester’s unstable voltage. In this thesis, the design of a reference-free voltage sensor, which can operate with a varying voltage source, is provided based on the capture of a portion of the total energy which is directly related to II the energy being sensed. This energy is then used to power a computation which quantifies captured energy over time, with the information directly generated as digital code. The sensor was fabricated in the 180 nm technology node and successfully tested by performing voltage measurements over the range 1.8 V to 0.8 V

    Efficient and Robust Delay-Insensitive QCA (Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata) Design

    The concept of clocking for QCA, referred to as the four-phase clocking, is widely used. However, inherited characteristics of QCA, such as the way to hold state, the way to synchronize data flows, and the way to power QCA cells, make the design of QCA circuits quite different from VLSI and introduce a variety of new design challenges. The most severe challenges are due to the fact that the overall timing of a QCA circuit is mainly dependent upon its layout. This issue is commonly referred to as the layout =timing problem. To circumvent the problem, a novel self-timed circuit design technique referred to as the locally synchronous, globally asynchronous design for QCA has been recently proposed. The proposed technique can significantly reduce the layout-timing dependency from the global network of QCA devices in a circuit; therefore, considerably flexible QCA circuit design is be possible. Also, the proposed technique is more scalable in designing large-scale systems. Since a less number of cells is used, the overall area is smaller and the manufacturability is better.     Design and analysis of SRAMs for energy harvesting systems

    PhD ThesisAt present, the battery is employed as a power source for wide varieties of microelectronic systems ranging from biomedical implants and sensor net-works to portable devices. However, the battery has several limitations and incurs many challenges for the majority of these systems. For instance, the design considerations of implantable devices concern about the battery from two aspects, the toxic materials it contains and its lifetime since replacing the battery means a surgical operation. Another challenge appears in wire-less sensor networks, where hundreds or thousands of nodes are scattered around the monitored environment and the battery of each node should be maintained and replaced regularly, nonetheless, the batteries in these nodes do not all run out at the same time. Since the introduction of portable systems, the area of low power designs has witnessed extensive research, driven by the industrial needs, towards the aim of extending the lives of batteries. Coincidentally, the continuing innovations in the field of micro-generators made their outputs in the same range of several portable applications. This overlap creates a clear oppor-tunity to develop new generations of electronic systems that can be powered, or at least augmented, by energy harvesters. Such self-powered systems benefit applications where maintaining and replacing batteries are impossi-ble, inconvenient, costly, or hazardous, in addition to decreasing the adverse effects the battery has on the environment. The main goal of this research study is to investigate energy harvesting aware design techniques for computational logic in order to enable the capa- II bility of working under non-deterministic energy sources. As a case study, the research concentrates on a vital part of all computational loads, SRAM, which occupies more than 90% of the chip area according to the ITRS re-ports. Essentially, this research conducted experiments to find out the design met-ric of an SRAM that is the most vulnerable to unpredictable energy sources, which has been confirmed to be the timing. Accordingly, the study proposed a truly self-timed SRAM that is realized based on complete handshaking protocols in the 6T bit-cell regulated by a fully Speed Independent (SI) tim-ing circuitry. The study proved the functionality of the proposed design in real silicon.     Space qualified nanosatellite electronics platform for photon pair experiments

    We report the design and implementation of a complete electronics platform for conducting a quantum optics experiment that will be operated on board a 1U CubeSat (a 10 x 10 x 10 cm satellite). The quantum optics experiment is designed to produce polarization-entangled photon pairs using non-linear optical crystals and requires opto-electronic components such as a pump laser, single photon detectors and liquid crystal based polarization rotators in addition to passive optical elements. The platform provides mechanical support for the optical assembly. It also communicates autonomously with the host satellite to provide experiment data for transmission to a ground station. A limited number of commands can be transmitted from ground to the platform enabling it to switch experimental modes. This platform requires less than 1.5W for all operations, and is space qualified. The implementation of this electronics platform is a major step on the road to operating quantum communication experiments using nanosatellites.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figure

    Smart Sensor Networks For Sensor-Neural Interface

    One in every fifty Americans suffers from paralysis, and approximately 23% of paralysis cases are caused by spinal cord injury. To help the spinal cord injured gain functionality of their paralyzed or lost body parts, a sensor-neural-actuator system is commonly used. The system includes: 1) sensor nodes, 2) a central control unit, 3) the neural-computer interface and 4) actuators. This thesis focuses on a sensor-neural interface and presents the research related to circuits for the sensor-neural interface. In Chapter 2, three sensor designs are discussed, including a compressive sampling image sensor, an optical force sensor and a passive scattering force sensor. Chapter 3 discusses the design of the analog front-end circuit for the wireless sensor network system. A low-noise low-power analog front-end circuit in 0.5μm CMOS technology, a 12-bit 1MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in 0.18μm CMOS process and a 6-bit asynchronous level-crossing ADC realized in 0.18μm CMOS process are presented. Chapter 4 shows the design of a low-power impulse-radio ultra-wide-band (IR-UWB) transceiver (TRx) that operates at a data rate of up to 10Mbps, with a power consumption of 4.9pJ/bit transmitted for the transmitter and 1.12nJ/bit received for the receiver. In Chapter 5, a wireless fully event-driven electrogoniometer is presented. The electrogoniometer is implemented using a pair of ultra-wide band (UWB) wireless smart sensor nodes interfacing with low power 3-axis accelerometers. The two smart sensor nodes are configured into a master node and a slave node, respectively. An experimental scenario data analysis shows higher than 90% reduction of the total data throughput using the proposed fully event-driven electrogoniometer to measure joint angle movements when compared with a synchronous Nyquist-rate sampling system. The main contribution of this thesis includes: 1) the sensor designs that emphasize power efficiency and data throughput efficiency; 2) the fully event-driven wireless sensor network system design that minimizes data throughput and optimizes power consumption

    Dynamic Power Management for Neuromorphic Many-Core Systems

    This work presents a dynamic power management architecture for neuromorphic many core systems such as SpiNNaker. A fast dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) technique is presented which allows the processing elements (PE) to change their supply voltage and clock frequency individually and autonomously within less than 100 ns. This is employed by the neuromorphic simulation software flow, which defines the performance level (PL) of the PE based on the actual workload within each simulation cycle. A test chip in 28 nm SLP CMOS technology has been implemented. It includes 4 PEs which can be scaled from 0.7 V to 1.0 V with frequencies from 125 MHz to 500 MHz at three distinct PLs. By measurement of three neuromorphic benchmarks it is shown that the total PE power consumption can be reduced by 75%, with 80% baseline power reduction and a 50% reduction of energy per neuron and synapse computation, all while maintaining temporary peak system performance to achieve biological real-time operation of the system. A numerical model of this power management model is derived which allows DVFS architecture exploration for neuromorphics.     Analysis of asynchronous routers for network-on-chip applications

    Asynchronous circuit design has been conventionally regarded as a valid alternative to synchronous logic due to its potential for low consumption of resources, power and delay. This includes areas such as the communication infrastructure of modern multi core processors, the so-called Network-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm on which this thesis focus on. In recent times, the transistor downscaling and the increasing clock frequencies have pushed synchronous design to high static power and delay. As a result, the interest for asynchronous integrated routers and links has re-emerged, especially in fields with ultra-low power requirements such as embedded systems. In this thesis, we construct an asynchronous router using Verilog code based on architectures found in the literature. We analyze the functionality of each of the building blocks and verify the operation of the implemented routing algorithm and arbitration mechanism. In the future, the results obtained here are expected to enable a complete implementation of the router in Verilog and its posterior analysis of its scalability
