Robust Model Predictive Control for Signal Temporal Logic Synthesis
Most automated systems operate in uncertain or adversarial conditions, and have to be capable of reliably reacting to changes in the environment. The focus of this paper is on automatically synthesizing reactive controllers for cyber-physical systems subject to signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. We build on recent work that encodes STL specifications as mixed integer linear constraints on the variables of a discrete-time model of the system and environment dynamics. To obtain a reactive controller, we present solutions to the worst-case model predictive control (MPC) problem using a suite of mixed integer linear programming techniques. We demonstrate the comparative effectiveness of several existing worst-case MPC techniques, when applied to the problem of control subject to temporal logic specifications; our empirical results emphasize the need to develop specialized solutions for this domain

Safety-Critical Control Synthesis for network systems with Control Barrier Functions and Assume-Guarantee Contracts
This paper presents a contract based framework for safety-critical control synthesis for network systems. To handle the large state dimension of such systems, an assume-guarantee contract is used to break the large synthesis problem into smaller subproblems. Parameterized signal temporal logic (pSTL) is used to formally describe the behaviors of the subsystems, which we use as the template for the contract. We show that robust control invariant sets (RCIs) for the subsystems can be composed to form a robust control invariant set for the whole network system under a valid assume-guarantee contract. An epigraph algorithm is proposed to solve for a contract that is valid, ---an approach that has linear complexity for a sparse network, which leads to a robust control invariant set for the whole network. Implemented with control barrier function (CBF), the state of each subsystem is guaranteed to stay within the safe set. Furthermore, we propose a contingency tube Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach based on the robust control invariant set, which is capable of handling severe contingencies, including topology changes of the network. A power grid example is used to demonstrate the proposed method. The simulation result includes both set point control and contingency recovery, and the safety constraint is always satisfied
Robust Temporal Logic Model Predictive Control
Control synthesis from temporal logic specifications has gained popularity in
recent years. In this paper, we use a model predictive approach to control
discrete time linear systems with additive bounded disturbances subject to
constraints given as formulas of signal temporal logic (STL). We introduce a
(conservative) computationally efficient framework to synthesize control
strategies based on mixed integer programs. The designed controllers satisfy
the temporal logic requirements, are robust to all possible realizations of the
disturbances, and optimal with respect to a cost function. In case the temporal
logic constraint is infeasible, the controller satisfies a relaxed, minimally
violating constraint. An illustrative case study is included.Comment: This work has been accepted to appear in the proceedings of 53rd

Model Predictive Control for Signal Temporal Logic Specification
We present a mathematical programming-based method for model predictive
control of cyber-physical systems subject to signal temporal logic (STL)
specifications. We describe the use of STL to specify a wide range of
properties of these systems, including safety, response and bounded liveness.
For synthesis, we encode STL specifications as mixed integer-linear constraints
on the system variables in the optimization problem at each step of a receding
horizon control framework. We prove correctness of our algorithms, and present
experimental results for controller synthesis for building energy and climate
control
Formal controller synthesis for wastewater systems with signal temporal logic constraints: the Barcelona case study
© . This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/We present an approach for formal controller synthesis of the Barcelona wastewater system. The goal of the controller is to minimize overflow in the system and to reduce environmental contamination (pollution). Due to the influence of sudden and unpredictable weather changes within the Mediterranean climate, we propose robust model predictive control strategy. This approach synthesizes control inputs (i.e., flows through network actuators) that make the system robust to uncertainties in the weather forecast; control inputs are updated in an online fashion to incorporate the newly available measurements from the system and the disturbances. We employ signal temporal logic as a formal mechanism to express the desired behavior of the system. The quantitative semantics of the logic is then used to encode the desired behavior in both the set of constraints and the objective function of the optimization problem. We propose a solution approach for the obtained worst-case optimization, which is based on transforming the nonlinear dynamics of the system into a mixed logical dynamical model. Then, we employ Monte Carlo sampling and dual reformulation to get a mixed integer linear or quadratic programming problem. The proposed approach is applied to a catchment of the Barcelona wastewater system to illustrate its effectiveness.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Diagnosis and Repair for Synthesis from Signal Temporal Logic Specifications
We address the problem of diagnosing and repairing specifications for hybrid
systems formalized in signal temporal logic (STL). Our focus is on the setting
of automatic synthesis of controllers in a model predictive control (MPC)
framework. We build on recent approaches that reduce the controller synthesis
problem to solving one or more mixed integer linear programs (MILPs), where
infeasibility of a MILP usually indicates unrealizability of the controller
synthesis problem. Given an infeasible STL synthesis problem, we present
algorithms that provide feedback on the reasons for unrealizability, and
suggestions for making it realizable. Our algorithms are sound and complete,
i.e., they provide a correct diagnosis, and always terminate with a non-trivial
specification that is feasible using the chosen synthesis method, when such a
solution exists. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on the
synthesis of controllers for various cyber-physical systems, including an
autonomous driving application and an aircraft electric power system
