    Robust CFAR Detector Based on Truncated Statistics for Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar

    Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithms using a local training window are widely used for ship detection with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. However, when the density of the targets is high, such as in busy shipping lines and crowded harbors, the background statistics may be contaminated by the presence of nearby targets in the training window. Recently, a robust CFAR detector based on truncated statistics (TS) was proposed. However, the truncation of data in the format of polarimetric covariance matrices is much more complicated with respect to the truncation of intensity (single polarization) data. In this article, a polarimetric whitening filter TS CFAR (PWF-TS-CFAR) is proposed to estimate the background parameters accurately in the contaminated sea clutter for PolSAR imagery. The CFAR detector uses a polarimetric whitening filter (PWF) to turn the multidimensional problem to a 1-D case. It uses truncation to exclude possible statistically interfering outliers and uses TS to model the remaining background samples. The algorithm does not require prior knowledge of the interfering targets, and it is performed iteratively and adaptively to derive better estimates of the polarimetric covariance matrix (although this is computationally expensive). The PWF-TS-CFAR detector provides accurate background clutter modeling, a stable false alarm property, and improves the detection performance in high-target-density situations. RadarSat2 data are used to verify our derivations, and the results are in line with the theory

    CFAR Ship Detection in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Based on Whitening Filter

    Polarimetric whitening filter (PWF) can be used to filter polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images to improve the contrast between ships and sea clutter background. For this reason, the output of the filter can be used to detect ships. This paper deals with the setting of the threshold over PolSAR images filtered by the PWF. Two parameter-constant false alarm rate (2P-CFAR) is a common detection method used on whitened polarimetric images. It assumes that the probability density function (PDF) of the filtered image intensity is characterized by a log-normal distribution. However, this assumption does not always hold. In this paper, we propose a systemic analytical framework for CFAR algorithms based on PWF or multi-look PWF (MPWF). The framework covers the entire log-cumulants space in terms of the textural distributions in the product model, including the constant, gamma, inverse gamma, Fisher, beta, inverse beta, and generalized gamma distributions (GΓDs). We derive the analytical forms of the PDF for each of the textural distributions and the probability of false alarm (PFA). Finally, the threshold is derived by fixing the false alarm rate (FAR). Experimental results using both the simulated and real data demonstrate that the derived expressions and CFAR algorithms are valid and robust

    A comparative study of operational vessel detectors for maritime surveillance using satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar

    This paper presents a comparative study among four operational detectors that work by automatically post-processing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired from the satellite platforms RADARSAT-2 and COSMO-SkyMed. Challenging maritime scenarios have been chosen to assess the detectors' performance against features such as ambiguities, significant sea clutter, or irregular shorelines. The SAR images which form the test data are complemented with ground truth to define the reference detection configuration, which permits quantifying the probability of detection, the false alarm rate, and the accuracy of estimating ship dimensions. Although the results show that all the detectors perform well, there is no perfect detector, and a better detection system could be developed that combines the best elements from each of the single detectors. In addition to the comparison exercise, the study has facilitated the improvement of the detectors by highlighting weaknesses and providing means for fixing them.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Maritime Moving Target Detection, Tracking and Geocoding Using Range-Compressed Airborne Radar Data

    Eine regelmäßige und großflächige überwachung des Schiffsverkehrs gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung, vor allem auch um maritime Gefahrenlagen und illegale Aktivitäten rechtzeitig zu erkennen. Heutzutage werden dafür überwiegend das automatische Identifikationssystem (AIS) und stationäre Radarstationen an den Küsten eingesetzt. Luft- und weltraumgestützte Radarsensoren, die unabhängig vom Wetter und Tageslicht Daten liefern, können die vorgenannten Systeme sehr gut ergänzen. So können sie beispielsweise Schiffe detektieren, die nicht mit AIS-Transpondern ausgestattet sind oder die sich außerhalb der Reichweite der stationären AIS- und Radarstationen befinden. Luftgestützte Radarsensoren ermöglichen eine quasi-kontinuierliche Beobachtung von räumlich begrenzten Gebieten. Im Gegensatz dazu bieten weltraumgestützte Radare eine große räumliche Abdeckung, haben aber den Nachteil einer geringeren temporalen Abdeckung. In dieser Dissertation wird ein umfassendes Konzept für die Verarbeitung von Radardaten für die Schiffsverkehr-überwachung mit luftgestützten Radarsensoren vorgestellt. Die Hauptkomponenten dieses Konzepts sind die Detektion, das Tracking, die Geokodierung, die Bildgebung und die Fusion mit AIS-Daten. Im Rahmen der Dissertation wurden neuartige Algorithmen für die ersten drei Komponenten entwickelt. Die Algorithmen sind so aufgebaut, dass sie sich prinzipiell für zukünftige Echtzeitanwendungen eignen, die eine Verarbeitung an Bord der Radarplattform erfordern. Darüber hinaus eignen sich die Algorithmen auch für beliebige, nicht-lineare Flugpfade der Radarplattform. Sie sind auch robust gegenüber Lagewinkeländerungen, die während der Datenerfassung aufgrund von Luftturbulenzen jederzeit auftreten können. Die für die Untersuchungen verwendeten Daten sind ausschließlich entfernungskomprimierte Radardaten. Da das Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis von Flugzeugradar-Daten im Allgemeinen sehr hoch ist, benötigen die neuentwickelten Algorithmen keine vollständig fokussierten Radarbilder. Dies reduziert die Gesamtverarbeitungszeit erheblich und ebnet den Weg für zukünftige Echtzeitanwendungen. Der entwickelte neuartige Schiffsdetektor arbeitet direkt im Entfernungs-Doppler-Bereich mit sehr kurzen kohärenten Verarbeitungsintervallen (CPIs) der entfernungskomprimierten Radardaten. Aufgrund der sehr kurzen CPIs werden die detektierten Ziele im Dopplerbereich fokussiert abgebildet. Wenn sich die Schiffe zusätzlich mit einer bestimmten Radialgeschwindigkeit bewegen, werden ihre Signale aus dem Clutter-Bereich hinausgeschoben. Dies erhöht das Verhältnis von Signal- zu Clutter-Energie und verbessert somit die Detektierbarkeit. Die Genauigkeit der Detektion hängt stark von der Qualität der von der Meeresoberfläche rückgestreuten Radardaten ab, die für die Schätzung der Clutter-Statistik verwendet werden. Diese wird benötigt, um einen Detektions-Schwellenwert für eine konstante Fehlalarmrate (CFAR) abzuleiten und die Anzahl der Fehlalarme niedrig zu halten. Daher umfasst der vorgeschlagene Detektor auch eine neuartige Methode zur automatischen Extraktion von Trainingsdaten für die Statistikschätzung sowie geeignete Ozean-Clutter-Modelle. Da es sich bei Schiffen um ausgedehnte Ziele handelt, die in hochauflösenden Radardaten mehr als eine Auflösungszelle belegen, werden nach der Detektion mehrere von einem Ziel stammende Pixel zu einem physischen Objekten zusammengefasst, das dann in aufeinanderfolgenden CPIs mit Hilfe eines Bewegungsmodells und eines neuen Mehrzielverfolgungs-Algorithmus (Multi-Target Tracking) getrackt wird. Während des Trackings werden falsche Zielspuren und Geisterzielspuren automatisch erkannt und durch ein leistungsfähiges datenbankbasiertes Track-Management-System terminiert. Die Zielspuren im Entfernungs-Doppler-Bereich werden geokodiert bzw. auf den Boden projiziert, nachdem die Einfallswinkel (DOA) aller Track-Punkte geschätzt wurden.     Iceberg Detection With RADARSAT-2 Quad-Polarimetric C-Band SAR in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard—Comparison With a Ground-Based Radar

    Satellite monitoring of icebergs in the Arctic region is paramount for the safety of shipping and maritime activities. The potential of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in enhancing detection capabilities of icebergs under interchangeable and challenging conditions is explored in this work. We introduce RADARSAT-2 quad-pol C -band data to detect icebergs in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. The location contains two tidewater glaciers and is chosen because multiple processes are present in this region, such as ice formation and its relationship with the glaciers, freshwater discharge. Six state-of-the-art detectors are tested for detection performance. These are the dual-intensity polarization ratio anomaly detector, polarimetric notch filter, polarimetric match filter, symmetry, polarimetric whitening filter (PWF), and optimal polarimetric detector (OPD). In addition, we also tested the parameters of the Cloude–Pottier decomposition. In this study, we make use of a ground-based radar for validation and comparison with satellite images. We show that in calm sea-state conditions, the OPD and PWF detectors give high probability of detection ( PD ) values of 0.7–0.8 when the probability of false alarm ( PF ) value is 0.01–0.05, compared with choppy sea conditions where the same detectors have degraded performance ( PD = 0.5–0.7). Target-to-clutter ratio (TCR) values for each polarization channel is also extracted and compared to the icebergs’ dimensions. The ground-based radar shows higher values in TCR, compared with satellite images. These findings corroborate previous work and show that sea-ice activity, surface roughness, incidence angle, weather, and sea-state conditions all affect the sensitivity of the detectors for this task

    Detection algorithms for spatial data

    This dissertation addresses the problem of anomaly detection in spatial data. The problem of landmine detection in airborne spatial data is chosen as the specific detection scenario. The first part of the dissertation deals with the development of a fast algorithm for kernel-based non-linear anomaly detection in the airborne spatial data. The original Kernel RX algorithm, proposed by Kwon et al. [2005a], suffers from the problem of high computational complexity, and has seen limited application. With the aim to reduce the computational complexity, a reformulated version of the Kernel RX, termed the Spatially Weighted Kernel RX (SW-KRX), is presented. It is shown that under this reformulation, the detector statistics can be obtained directly as a function of the centered kernel Gram matrix. Subsequently, a methodology for the fast computation of the centered kernel Gram matrix is proposed. The key idea behind the proposed methodology is to decompose the set of image pixels into clusters, and expediting the computations by approximating the effect of each cluster as a whole. The SW-KRX algorithm is implemented for a special case, and comparative results are compiled for the SW-KRX vis-à-vis the RX anomaly detector. In the second part of the dissertation, a detection methodology for buried mine detection is presented. The methodology is based on extraction of color texture information using cross-co-occurrence features. A feature selection methodology based on Bhattacharya coefficients and principal feature analysis is proposed and detection results with different feature-based detectors are presented, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in the extraction of useful discriminatory information --Abstract, page iii

    The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches.
