Different discussions on roboethics and information ethics based on different contexts (BA). Discussions on robots, informatics and life in the information era in Japanese\ud bulletin board forums and mass media
In this paper, I will analyze âwhat sort of invisible reasons lie behind differences of discussions on roboethics and IE (Information Ethics) in Japan and âWesternâ culturesâ, focusing on (1) the recent trends of researches in roboethics in âWesternâ cultures, (2) the tendencies of portrayal of robots, ICTs, Informatics, life in the information era reflected in news papers reports and talks on BBSs in Japan. As we will see in this paper, Japanese people have difficulty in understanding some of the key concepts used in the fields of roboethics and IE (Information Ethics) such as âautonomyâ or âresponsibility (of robots)â,etc. This difficulty appears to derive from different types of discussions based on of different cultural contexts (Ba) in which the majority of people in each culture are provided with a certain sort of shared/ normalized frames of narratives. In my view and according to some Japanese critics or authors, senses of ârealityâ of Japanese people are strongly related with "emotional sensitivity to things/persons/events in life" or "direct-non>mediated-intuitive\ud
awareness/knowing" (Izutsu, 2001). These tendencies in Japanese minds seem to influence their limited interest in the "abstract" discussions as well\ud
as in straightforward emotional expressions with regard to robots and ICTs
The birth of roboethics
The importance, and urgency, of a Roboethics lay in the lesson of our recent history. Two of the front rank fields of science and technology, Nuclear Physics and Genetic Engineering, have already been forced to face the ethical consequences of their researchâs applications under the pressure of dramatic and troubling events. In many countries, public opinion, shocked by some of these effects, urged to either halt the whole applications, or to seriously control them.
Robotics is rapidly becoming one of the leading field of science and technology, so that we can forecast that in the XXI century humanity will coexist with the first alien intelligence we have ever come in contact with - robots. It will be an event rich in ethical, social and economic problems. Public opinion is already asking questions such as: âCould a robot do "good" and "evilâ? âCould robots be dangerous for humankind?â
"Involving Interface": An Extended Mind Theoretical Approach to Roboethics
In 2008 the authors held Involving Interface, a lively interdisciplinary event focusing on issues of biological, sociocultural, and technological interfacing (see Acknowledgments). Inspired by discussions at this event, in this article, we further discuss the value of input from neuroscience for developing robots and machine interfaces, and the value of philosophy, the humanities, and the arts for identifying persistent links between human interfacing and broader ethical concerns. The importance of ongoing interdisciplinary debate and public communication on scientific and technical advances is also highlighted. Throughout, the authors explore the implications of the extended mind hypothesis for notions of moral accountability and robotics
Assistive robotics: research challenges and ethics education initiatives
Assistive robotics is a fast growing field aimed at helping healthcarers in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursery homes, as well as empowering people with reduced mobility at home, so that they can autonomously fulfill their daily living activities. The need to function in dynamic human-centered environments poses new research challenges: robotic assistants need to have friendly interfaces, be highly adaptable and customizable, very compliant and intrinsically safe to people, as well as able to handle deformable materials.
Besides technical challenges, assistive robotics raises also ethical defies, which have led to the emergence of a new discipline: Roboethics. Several institutions are developing regulations and standards, and many ethics education initiatives include contents on human-robot interaction and human dignity in assistive situations.
In this paper, the state of the art in assistive robotics is briefly reviewed, and educational materials from a university course on Ethics in Social Robotics and AI focusing on the assistive context are presented.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

In this paper, I will analyze âcultural meanings and valuesâ associated with some of the important IIE(intercultural information ethics) topics in âFar East, âi.e. âhuman and robot interaction(HRI)â and âprivacy.â By focusing on these relatively newly emerging topics in âFar East,â I will attempt to make the cultural Ba (locus/place where different\ud
meanings of things, events, peopleâs experiences come together; or frameworks for understanding meanings of phenomena and events) visible through analysis of research data done in Japan, Thailand and China in the past several years. The research data shown in this paper suggest that we canât understand peopleâs attitudes toward robots and privacy in âFar Eastâ without taking into consideration peopleâs broader views on âwhat is a good life?â and âwhat is a virtuous life?
Human-Robot Dichotomy
This paper belongs to the area of roboethics and responsible robotics. It discusses the conceptual and practical separation of humans and robots in designing and implementing robots into real-world environments. We argue here that humans are often seen as a component that is only optional in design thinking, and in some cases even an obstacle to the successful robot performance. Such an approach may vary from viewing humans as a factor that does not belong to the robotics domain, through attempts to âadjustâ humans to robot requirements, to the overall replacement of humans with robots. Such separation or exclusion of humans poses serious ethical challenges, including the very exclusion of ethics from our thinking about robots
Ethic Reflections About Service Robotics, From Human Protection to Enhancement. Case Study on Cultural Heritage
In a vision of future implications of human robot interactions, is vital to investigate how computer ethics and specifically, roboethics could help to enhance Humanâs life. In this chapter will be emphasized the role of design expertise by setting into a constructive dialogue multiple disciplines. The reflections will take into consideration different themes, such as acceptability and aesthetics, but above all the ability to generate value and meaning in different contexts. These contexts could find a description in the concept of human enhancement, connected through each other with the skills of the design research. The methodology of the design research will find applicability in the case study of Virgil, where a robo-ethic approach is contextualized into a Cultural heritage field. In this field is showed how the ethical approach, will bring a benefit to local communities, but at large to any social and cultural strategies involved in the stakeholdersâ network
