Remarks on Technology Growth in Virginia: How UCITA Will Help

I\u27m Terry Riley from the Hampton Roads Technology Council, and technology councils represent business. But predominantly we represent small business, and predominantly we represent users of software, not developers and sellers of software. In the case of my own technology council down [in the] southeastern part of the state, 85 percent of our members have 25 or fewer employees. Less than 5 percent of our members are developers, sellers, or licensors of software. So to a very substantial extent my views and my representations of the interests of my membership have to do with their concerns or their rights as customers, as users of software, as opposed to the developer or vendors of software. [There are] a couple of principles I\u27d like to establish, but, first, let me remind [you] again that none of us are attorneys. So we wouldn\u27t sit up here and attempt to instruct you on the law. But we have developed, through reading UCITA way more hours than we wanted to, perhaps a lay person\u27s view of what UCITA says and what it does. And I\u27d like to review some of the details as I understand them in the context of what is it about this part of UCITA that is good for vendors and what is good for customers

Necklace Radio Transmitter Attachment For Pheasants

We tested a pre-assembled, necklace-radio-transmitter-attachment design on female ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in northern Iowa. Birds were captured by nightlighting and bait trapping between September 1989 and March 1990. Radio transmitters were attached to 128 using a wire necklace. Two birds had problems adapting to the necklace, and 3 birds removed them. Twenty-three birds were still alive and wearing necklaces at the end of the study, for an average of 318 (SD= ± 52) days. Ease of attachment, long durability, light weight, and minimal bulk make the necklace an effective alternative to harness and poncho mounts

    Minimalism and the guitar

    Get PDF
This dissertation aims to investigate musical minimalism and its influence on the classical guitar repertoire. Minimalism is defined through a taxonomy of minimalist techniques and the use of minimalist techniques is then traced through a preliminary survey of the guitar repertoire. While classical minimalists Steve Reich and Terry Riley have written several guitar works, the true pioneer of minimalism on the guitar is shown to be Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. Use of minimalist techniques is also particularly prevalent among Australian composers, including Nigel Westlake, Peter Sculthorpe, Robert Davidson, and Phillip Houghton. Curiously, a large number of guitar works employ minimalist techniques in evocation of landscapes. Additionally, minimalist techniques have been used extensively in the burgeoning genre of guitar ensemble, including works by Leo Brouwer, Steve Reich, David Pritchard, and Joe Duddell

The Changing Habitat And Decline Of Ring-Necked Pheasant Populations In Otoe County, Nebraska

Since the early 20th century, wildlife conservation in Untied States has walked a fine line of growth and decline. The implementation of the Ring-Necked Pheasant in Nebraska has brought a wealth of tradition and revenue to the state across multiple generations. This thesis analyzes how habitat changes in Otoe County, Nebraska have affected the Ring-Necked Pheasant population, and what programs are in place to counteract the issue. To answer this question, the study compared five different aerial photos taken from Google Earth Pro and the county archives located in Hardin Hall at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. The results of the study showed a significant change in critical habitat across various demographics of landscape such as native prairie grass, row-crop farmland, and forestation. Results also revealed that although the pheasant population has not increased, it has maintained a sustainable level above complete eradication due to corrective private land use alternatives. From a conservation perspective this study emphasizes the need for practical private land usages and the critical impact of habitat loss on game species
