Environmental regulations have saved millions of lives, preventing chronic respiratory illness and heart attacks in cities across the country. These rules protect children from irreversible neurological damage, save billions of dollars in cleanup costs, and preserve water quality in lakes, rivers, and streams. If anything, our regulatory system is dangerously weak, and Congress should focus on reviving it rather than eroding public protections…

Fidelity to Natural Law and Natural Rights in Constitutional Interpretation

It is an honor and a pleasure to comment on Professor Robert P. George\u27s elegant and provocative paper.\u27 For one thing, he is a leading proponent of reviving the natural law tradition in political, legal, and constitutional theory.2 For another, he was a reader of my Ph.D. dissertation in constitutional theory at Princeton University over a decade ago. I am happy to have the chance to reciprocate by reading a work of his and providing a critique of it. Fortunately, I learned at Princeton that vigorous criticism and disagreement are fully compatible with friendship and respect

Pakistan: Breaking out of stagflation into sustained growth

    Get PDF
This paper proposes that the underlying cause of the macroeconomic problems facing Pakistan today are a series of supply shocks which have constrained output growth. It is argued that while the current debate has solely focused on government expenditures and revenues, it is critical to also address the acute energy shortages which is constraining supply. The paper goes on to present four recommendations for breaking out of the present stagflation: (i) prudent macroeconomic management, (ii) reviving the role of the government in development while restoring fiscal balance, (iii) loosening monetary policy in order to spur the private sector, and (iv) improving social safety nets.Economic Growth, Supply Shock, Pakistan

The figure of Prophet Muhammad is a guide and role model of the whole matters of life for the Muslims. It was starting from religious to domestic matters. Likewise, with the problem of clothing, the Prophet has been guided through his sunnah, written in the hadith. Today, some Muslims attempt to reviving the sunnah and embodying it in their life. The phenomenon of reviving the sunnah with jargon back to the Quran and Sunnah has seemed familiar to us. This paper tries to explore how the Salafi of Pondok Pesantren Tahfidz al-Qur’an Harun as-Syafi’i, Karangkajen, Yogyakarta recepties and embodies the isbal hadiths in their daily life. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a living hadith approach.  In this research, the Salafi has the high spirit of reviving and embodying every sunnah of the Prophet. Thus, the sunnah is not only mute text, but it becomes the living hadith (in this case is non-isbal clothes). The Salafi, understanding this hadith, was obliged to Muslims wearing non-isbal clothes. This manner reflects two models of reception, namely exegetical reception and functional receptio

    Dadaism (Re)activated. Artzins and Dada

The article analyses in what way artzins (independent art and literary journals published in Poland in the 1980s and 1990s) drew inspiration from the Dada tradition, and how they made its philosophy live again. Artzins are seen here both as a medium of literature and art and as specific forms of artistic expression (press art). The article attempts to show why artzins and their authors were interested in reviving the avant-garde and Dada ideas. It also investigates how Dadaism functions today in the form of contemporary works and styles which are influenced by this avant-garde movement. What is more, the article tries to answer the question about the nature and definition of Dadaism shaped and reflected by today's artistic projects

Soft Power to Whom? A Critical Analysis of the Publicity Film “CPC (Communist Party of China) is With You Along the Way” in Relation to China’s Soft Power Project

    Get PDF
The existing literature on China’s soft power is mainly concerned with its success or failure, ignoring the ideological tensions between the Chinese state's international pursuit of soft power and its efforts at reviving the popularity of socialist ideology at home in a country profoundly transformed by modernisation and globalisation processes. This article argues that such ideological tensions should be contextualised and critically analysed by employing an approach informed by critical globalisation studies, particularly by the power-to-whom critique. It offers a critical analysis of the CPC is With You Along the Way film, a notable recent example of the CPC’s publicity videos in the context of its pursuit of soft power. Borrowing Reisigl and Wodak’s discourse-historical approach (DHA) in addition to the analytical devices for the study of ideology from Eagleton and van Dijk, the article argues that CPC is With You Along the Way illustrates a shift in the party’s ideological approach to the question ‘(soft) power to whom?’
