    Barcode Annotations for Medical Image Retrieval: A Preliminary Investigation

    This paper proposes to generate and to use barcodes to annotate medical images and/or their regions of interest such as organs, tumors and tissue types. A multitude of efficient feature-based image retrieval methods already exist that can assign a query image to a certain image class. Visual annotations may help to increase the retrieval accuracy if combined with existing feature-based classification paradigms. Whereas with annotations we usually mean textual descriptions, in this paper barcode annotations are proposed. In particular, Radon barcodes (RBC) are introduced. As well, local binary patterns (LBP) and local Radon binary patterns (LRBP) are implemented as barcodes.     MinMax Radon Barcodes for Medical Image Retrieval

    Content-based medical image retrieval can support diagnostic decisions by clinical experts. Examining similar images may provide clues to the expert to remove uncertainties in his/her final diagnosis. Beyond conventional feature descriptors, binary features in different ways have been recently proposed to encode the image content. A recent proposal is "Radon barcodes" that employ binarized Radon projections to tag/annotate medical images with content-based binary vectors, called barcodes. In this paper, MinMax Radon barcodes are introduced which are superior to "local thresholding" scheme suggested in the literature. Using IRMA dataset with 14,410 x-ray images from 193 different classes, the advantage of using MinMax Radon barcodes over \emph{thresholded} Radon barcodes are demonstrated. The retrieval error for direct search drops by more than 15\%. As well, SURF, as a well-established non-binary approach, and BRISK, as a recent binary method are examined to compare their results with MinMax Radon barcodes when retrieving images from IRMA dataset. Introduction of machine learning to vessel detection significantly enhanced the performance and efficiency of the detection, but a substantial majority of studies focused on modifying the object detector algorithm. As the fundamental enhancement of the detection performance would be nearly impossible without accurate training data of vessels, this study implemented AIS information containing real-time information of vesselโ€™s movement in order to propose a robust algorithm which acquires the training data of vessels in an automated manner. As AIS information was irregularly and discretely obtained, the exact target interpolation time for each vessel was precisely determined, followed by the implementation of Kalman filter, which mitigates the measurement error of AIS sensor. In addition, as the velocity of each vessel renders an imprint inside the SAR image named as Doppler frequency shift, it was calibrated by restoring the elliptic satellite orbit from the satellite state vector and estimating the distance between the satellite and the target vessel. From the calibrated position of the AIS sensor inside the corresponding SAR image, training data was directly obtained via internal allocation of the AIS sensor in each vessel. For fishing boats, separate information system named as VPASS was applied for the identical procedure of training data retrieval. Training data of vessels obtained via the automated training data procurement algorithm was evaluated by a conventional object detector, for three detection evaluating parameters: precision, recall and F1 score. All three evaluation parameters from the proposed training data acquisition significantly exceeded that from the manual acquisition. The major difference between two training datasets was demonstrated in the inshore regions and in the vicinity of strong scattering vessels in which land artifacts, ships and the ghost signals derived from them were indiscernible by visual inspection.     Ocean wind and wave parameter estimation from ship-borne x-band marine radar data

    Ocean wind and wave parameters are important for the study of oceanography, on- and off-shore activities, and the safety of ship navigation. Conventionally, such parameters have been measured by in-situ sensors such as anemometers and buoys. During the last three decades, sea surface observation using X-band marine radar has drawn wide attention since marine radars can image both temporal and spatial variations of the sea surface. In this thesis, novel algorithms for wind and wave parameter retrieval from X-band marine radar data are developed and tested using radar, anemometer, and buoy data collected in a sea trial off the east coast of Canada in the North Atlantic Ocean. Rain affects radar backscatter and leads to less reliable wind parameters measurements. In this thesis, algorithms are developed to enable reliable wind parameters measurements under rain conditions. Firstly, wind directions are extracted from raincontaminated radar data using either a 1D or 2D ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) technique and are seen to compare favourably with an anemometer reference. Secondly, an algorithm based on EEMD and amplitude modulation (AM) analysis to retrieve wind direction and speed from both rain-free and rain-contaminated X-band marine radar images is developed and is shown to be an improvement over an earlier 1D spectral analysis-based method. For wave parameter measurements, an empirical modulation transfer function (MTF) is required for traditional spectral analysis-based techniques. Moreover, the widely used signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based method for significant wave height (HS) estimation may not always work well for a ship-borne X-band radar, and it requires external sensors for calibration. In this thesis, two methods are first presented for HS estimation from X-band marine radar data. One is an EEMD-based method, which enables satisfactory HS measurements obtained from a ship-borne radar. The other is a modified shadowingbased method, which enables HS measurements without the inclusion of external sensors. Furthermore, neither method requires the MTF. Finally, an algorithm based on the Radon transform is proposed to estimate wave direction and periods from X-band marine radar images with satisfactory results

    Evaluation and improvement of methods for estimating sea surface wave parameters from X-band marine radar data

    In this thesis, several algorithms have been proposed for estimating ocean wave parameters from X-band marine radar data, i.e., wave direction, wave period, and significant wave height. In the first part of this study, the accuracy of wave direction and period estimation from X-band marine radar images under different rain rates is analyzed, and a sub-image selection scheme is proposed to mitigate the rain effect. Firstly, each radar image is divided into multiple sub-images, and the sub-images with relatively clear wave signatures are identified based on a random-forest based classiffication model. Then, wave direction is estimated by performing a Radon transform (RT) on each valid sub-image. As for wave period estimation, a random-forest based regression method is proposed. Texture features are first extracted from each pixel of the selected sub-image using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and combined as a feature vector. Those feature vectors extracted from both rain-free and rain-contaminated training samples are then used to train a random-forest based wave period regression model. Shore-based X-band marine radar images, simultaneous rain rate data, as well as buoy-measured wave data collected on the West Coast of the United States are used to analyze the rain effect on wave parameter estimation accuracy and to validate the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed subimage selection scheme improves the estimation accuracy of both wave direction and wave period under different rain rates, with reductions of root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) by 6.9๏พŸ, 6.0๏พŸ, 4.9๏พŸ, and 1.0๏พŸ for wave direction under rainless, light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain conditions, respectively. As for wave period estimation, the RMSEs decrease by 0.13 s, 0.20 s, 0.30 s, and 0.20 s under those four rainfall intensity levels, respectively. The second part of research focuses on the estimation of significant wave height (Hโ‚›). A temporal convolutional network (TCN)-based model is proposed to retrieve Hโ‚› from X-band marine radar image sequences. Three types of features are first extracted from radar image sequences based on signal to noise ratio (SNR), ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), and GLCM methods, respectively. Then, feature vectors are input into the proposed TCN-based regression model to produce Hโ‚› estimation. Radar data are collected from a moving vessel at the East Coast of Canada, as well as simultaneously collected wave data from several wave buoys deployed nearby are used for model training and testing. After averaging, experimental results show that the TCN-based model further improves the Hโ‚› estimation accuracy, with reductions of RMSEs by 0.33 m and 0.10 m, respectively, compared to the SNR-based and the EEMD-based linear fitting methods. It has also been found that with the same feature extraction scheme, TCN outperforms other machine-learning based algorithms including support vector regression (SVR) and the convolutional gated recurrent unit (CGRU) network

    This review paper reports on the state-of-the-art concerning observations of surface winds, waves, and currents from space and their use for scientific research and subsequent applications. The development of observations of sea state parameters from space dates back to the 1970s, with a significant increase in the number and diversity of space missions since the 1990s. Sensors used to monitor the sea-state parameters from space are mainly based on microwave techniques. They are either specifically designed to monitor surface parameters or are used for their abilities to provide opportunistic measurements complementary to their primary purpose. The principles on which is based on the estimation of the sea surface parameters are first described, including the performance and limitations of each method. Numerous examples and references on the use of these observations for scientific and operational applications are then given. The richness and diversity of these applications are linked to the importance of knowledge of the sea state in many fields. Firstly, surface wind, waves, and currents are significant factors influencing exchanges at the air/sea interface, impacting oceanic and atmospheric boundary layers, contributing to sea level rise at the coasts, and interacting with the sea-ice formation or destruction in the polar zones. Secondly, ocean surface currents combined with wind- and wave- induced drift contribute to the transport of heat, salt, and pollutants. Waves and surface currents also impact sediment transport and erosion in coastal areas. For operational applications, observations of surface parameters are necessary on the one hand to constrain the numerical solutions of predictive models (numerical wave, oceanic, or atmospheric models), and on the other hand to validate their results. In turn, these predictive models are used to guarantee safe, efficient, and successful offshore operations, including the commercial shipping and energy sector, as well as tourism and coastal activities. Long-time series of global sea-state observations are also becoming increasingly important to analyze the impact of climate change on our environment. All these aspects are recalled in the article, relating to both historical and contemporary activities in these fields

Both books are a wonderful resource for students who wish to make their careers in this fascinating and rapidly developing field which has an ever increasing number of areas of application.     Underwater survey systems have numerous scientific or industrial applications in the fields of geology, biology, mining, and archeology. These application fields involve various tasks such as ecological studies, environmental damage assessment, and ancient prospection. During two decades, underwater imaging systems are mainly equipped by Underwater Vehicles (UV) for surveying in water or ocean. Challenges associated with obtaining visibility of objects have been difficult to overcome due to the physical properties of the medium. In the last two decades, sonar is usually used for the detection and recognition of targets in the ocean or underwater environment. However, because of the low quality of images by sonar imaging, optical vision sensors are then used instead of it for short range identification. Optical imaging provides short-range, high-resolution visual information of the ocean floor. However, due to the light transmissionโ€™s physical properties in the water medium, the optical imaged underwater images are usually performance as poor visibility. Light is highly attenuated when it travels in the ocean. Consequence, the imaged scenes result as poorly contrasted and hazy-like obstructions. The underwater imaging processing techniques are important to improve the quality of underwater images. As mentioned before, underwater images have poor visibility because of the medium scattering and light distortion. In contrast to common photographs, underwater optical images suffer from poor visibility owing to the medium, which causes scattering, color distortion, and absorption. Large suspended particles cause scattering similar to the scattering of light in fog or turbid water that contain many suspended particles. Color distortion occurs because different wavelengths are attenuated to different degrees in water; consequently, images of ambient in the underwater environments are dominated by a bluish tone, because higher wavelengths are attenuated more quickly. Absorption of light in water substantially reduces its intensity. The random attenuation of light causes a hazy appearance as the light backscattered by water along the line of sight considerably degrades image contrast. Especially, objects at a distance of more than 10 meters from the observation point are almost unreadable because colors are faded as characteristic wavelengths, which are filtered according to the distance traveled by light in water. So, traditional image processing methods are not suitable for processing them well. This thesis proposes strategies and solutions to tackle the above mentioned problems of underwater survey systems. In this thesis, we contribute image pre-processing, denoising, dehazing, inhomogeneities correction, color correction and fusion technologies for underwater image quality improvement. The main content of this thesis is as follows. First, comprehensive reviews of the current and most prominent underwater imaging systems are provided in Chapter 1. A main features and performance based classification criterion for the existing systems is presented. After that, by analyzing the challenges of the underwater imaging systems, a hardware based approach and non-hardware based approach is introduced. In this thesis, we are concerned about the image processing based technologies, which are one of the non-hardware approaches, and take most recent methods to process the low quality underwater images. As the different sonar imaging systems applied in much equipment, such as side-scan sonar, multi-beam sonar. The different sonar acquires different images with different characteristics. Side-scan sonar acquires high quality imagery of the seafloor with very high spatial resolution but poor locational accuracy. On the contrast, multi-beam sonar obtains high precision position and underwater depth in seafloor points. In order to fully utilize all information of these two types of sonars, it is necessary to fuse the two kinds of sonar data in Chapter 2. Considering the sonar image forming principle, for the low frequency curvelet coefficients, we use the maximum local energy method to calculate the energy of two sonar images. For the high frequency curvelet coefficients, we take absolute maximum method as a measurement. The main attributes are: firstly, the multi-resolution analysis method is well adapted the cured-singularities and point-singularities. It is useful for sonar intensity image enhancement. Secondly, maximum local energy is well performing the intensity sonar images, which can achieve perfect fusion result [42]. In Chapter 3, as analyzed the underwater laser imaging system, a Bayesian Contourlet Estimator of Bessel K Form (BCE-BKF) based denoising algorithm is proposed. We take the BCE-BKF probability density function (PDF) to model neighborhood of contourlet coefficients. After that, according to the proposed PDF model, we design a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator, which relies on a Bayesian statistics representation of the contourlet coefficients of noisy images. The denoised laser images have better contrast than the others. There are three obvious virtues of the proposed method. Firstly, contourlet transform decomposition prior to curvelet transform and wavelet transform by using ellipse sampling grid. Secondly, BCE-BKF model is more effective in presentation of the noisy image contourlet coefficients. Thirdly, the BCE-BKF model takes full account of the correlation between coefficients [107]. In Chapter 4, we describe a novel method to enhance underwater images by dehazing. In underwater optical imaging, absorption, scattering, and color distortion are three major issues in underwater optical imaging. Light rays traveling through water are scattered and absorbed according to their wavelength. Scattering is caused by large suspended particles that degrade optical images captured underwater. Color distortion occurs because different wavelengths are attenuated to different degrees in water; consequently, images of ambient underwater environments are dominated by a bluish tone. Our key contribution is to propose a fast image and video dehazing algorithm, to compensate the attenuation discrepancy along the propagation path, and to take the influence of the possible presence of an artificial lighting source into consideration [108]. In Chapter 5, we describe a novel method of enhancing underwater optical images or videos using guided multilayer filter and wavelength compensation. In certain circumstances, we need to immediately monitor the underwater environment by disaster recovery support robots or other underwater survey systems. However, due to the inherent optical properties and underwater complex environment, the captured images or videos are distorted seriously. Our key contributions proposed include a novel depth and wavelength based underwater imaging model to compensate for the attenuation discrepancy along the propagation path and a fast guided multilayer filtering enhancing algorithm. The enhanced images are characterized by a reduced noised level, better exposure of the dark regions, and improved global contrast where the finest details and edges are enhanced significantly [109]. The performance of the proposed approaches and the benefits are concluded in Chapter 6.     GNSS-based passive radar techniques for maritime surveillance

    The improvement of maritime traffic safety and security is a subject of growing interest, since the traffic is constantly increasing. In fact, a large number of human activities take place in maritime domain, varying from cruise and trading ships up to vessels involved in nefarious activities such as piracy, human smuggling or terrorist actions. The systems based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder cannot cope with non-cooperative or non-equipped vessels that instead can be detected, tracked and identified by means of radar system. In particular, passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems can perform these tasks without a dedicated transmitter, since they exploit illuminators of opportunity as transmitters. The lack of a dedicated transmitter makes such systems low cost and suitable to be employed in areas where active sensors cannot be placed such as, for example, marine protected areas. Innovative solutions based on terrestrial transmitters have been considered in order to increase maritime safety and security, but these kinds of sources cannot guarantee a global coverage, such as in open sea. To overcome this problem, the exploitation of global navigation satellites system (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity is a prospective solution. The global, reliable and persistent nature of these sources makes them potentially able to guarantee the permanent monitoring of both coastal and open sea areas. To this aim, this thesis addresses the exploitation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity in passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems for maritime surveillance. The main limitation of this technology is the restricted power budget provided by navigation satellites, which makes it necessary to define innovative moving target detection techniques specifically tailored for the system under consideration. For this reason, this thesis puts forward long integration time techniques able to collect the signal energy over long time intervals (tens of seconds), allowing the retrieval of suitable levels of signal-to-disturbance ratios for detection purposes. The feasibility of this novel application is firstly investigated in a bistatic system configuration. A long integration time moving target detection technique working in bistatic range&Doppler plane is proposed and its effectiveness is proved against synthetic and experimental datasets. Subsequently the exploitation of multiple transmitters for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea is also investigated. A single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration is proposed. Furthermore, the potential of the system to extract information concerning the detected target characteristics for further target classification is assessed
