Binary operation based hard exudate detection and fuzzy based classification in diabetic retinal fundus images for real time diagnosis applications
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most considerable reasons for visual impairment. The main objective of this paper is to automatically detect and recognize DR lesions like hard exudates, as it helps in diagnosing and screening of the disease. Here, binary operation based image processing for detecting lesions and fuzzy logic based extraction of hard exudates on diabetic retinal images are discused. In the initial stage, the binary operations are used to identify the exudates. Similarly, the RGB channel space of the DR image is used to create fuzzy sets and membership functions for extracting the exudates. The membership directives obtained from the fuzzy rule set are used to detect the grade of exudates. In order to evaluate the proposed approach, experiment tests are carriedout on various set of images and the results are verified. From the experiment results, the sensitivity obtained is 98.10%, specificity is 96.96% and accuracy is 98.2%. These results suggest that the proposed method could be a diagnostic aid for ophthalmologists in the screening for DR
UNRAVELLING DIABETIC RETINOPATHY THROUGH IMAGE PROCESSING, NEURAL NETWORKS AND FUZZY LOGIC – A REVIEW
One of the main causes of blindness is diabetic retinopathy (DR) and it may affect people of any ages. In these days, both young and old ages are affected by diabetes, and the di abetes is the main cause of DR. Hence, it is necessary to have an automated system with good accuracy and less computation time to diagnose and treat DR, and the automated system can simplify the work of ophthalmologists. The objective is to present an overview of various works recently in detecting and segmenting the various lesions of DR. Papers were categorized based on the diagnosing tools and the methods used for detecting early and advanced stage lesions. The early lesions of DR are microaneurysms, hemorrhages, exudates, and cotton wool spots and in the advanced stage, new and fragile blood vessels can be grown. Results have been evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and receiver operating characteristic curve. This paper analyzed the various steps and different algorithms used recently for the detection and classification of DR lesions. A comparison of performances has been made in terms of sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve, and accuracy. Suggestions, future workand the area to be improved were also discussed. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, Image processing, Morphological operations, Neural network, Fuzzy logic.Â
Semi-automated quantification of hard exudates in colour fundus photographs diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy
Background: Hard exudates (HEs) are the classical sign of diabetic retinopathy (DR) which is one of the leading causes of blindness, especially in developing countries. Accordingly, disease screening involves examining HEs qualitatively using fundus camera. However, for monitoring the treatment response, quantification of HEs becomes crucial and hence clinicians now seek to measure the area of HEs in the digital colour fundus (CF) photographs. Against this backdrop, we proposed an algorithm to quantify HEs using CF images and compare with previously reported technique using ImageJ. Methods: CF photographs of 30 eyes (20 patients) with diabetic macular edema were obtained. A robust semi-automated algorithm was developed to quantify area covered by HEs. In particular, the proposed algorithm, a two pronged methodology, involved performing top-hat filtering, second order statistical filtering, and thresholding of the colour fundus images. Subsequently, two masked observers performed HEs measurements using previously reported ImageJ-based protocol and compared with those obtained through proposed method. Intra and inter-observer grading was performed for determining percentage area of HEs identified by the individual algorithm. Results: Of the 30 subjects, 21 were males and 9 were females with a mean age of the 50.25 ± 7.80 years (range 33-66 years). The correlation between the two measurements of semi-automated and ImageJ were 0.99 and 0.99 respectively. Previously reported method detected only 0-30% of the HEs area in 9 images, 30-60% in 12 images and 60-90% in remaining images, and more than 90% in none. In contrast, proposed method, detected 60-90% of the HEs area in 13 images and 90-100% in remaining 17 images. Conclusion: Proposed method semi-automated algorithm achieved acceptable accuracy, qualitatively and quantitatively, on a heterogeneous dataset. Further, quantitative analysis performed based on intra- and inter-observer grading showed that proposed methodology detects HEs more accurately than previously reported ImageJ-based technique. In particular, we proposed algorithm detect faint HEs also as opposed to the earlier method
A new deep learning approach for the retinal hard exudates detection based on superpixel multi-feature extraction and patch-based CNN
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a severe complication of chronic diabetes causing significant visual deterioration and may lead to blindness with delay of being treated. Exudative diabetic maculopathy, a form of macular edema where hard exudates (HE) develop, is a frequent cause of visual deterioration in DR. The detection of HE comprises a significant role in the DR diagnosis. In this paper, an automatic exudates detection method based on superpixel multi-feature extraction and patch-based deep convolutional neural network is proposed. Firstly, superpixels, regarded as candidates, are generated on each resized image using the superpixel segmentation algorithm called Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC). Then, 25 features extracted from resized images and patches are generated on each feature. Patches are subsequently used to train a deep convolutional neural network, which distinguishes the hard exudates from the background. Experiments conducted on three publicly available datasets (DiaretDB1, e-ophtha EX and IDRiD) demonstrate that our proposed methodology achieved superior HE detection when compared with current state-of-art algorithms

Structure analysis and lesion detection from retinal fundus images
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Ocular pathology is one of the main health problems worldwide. The number of people with retinopathy symptoms has increased considerably in recent years. Early adequate treatment has demonstrated to be effective to avoid the loss of the vision. The analysis of fundus images is a non intrusive option for periodical retinal screening.
Different models designed for the analysis of retinal images are based on supervised methods, which require of hand labelled images and processing time as part of the training stage. On the other hand most of the methods have been designed under the basis of specific characteristics of the retinal images (e.g. field of view, resolution). This compromises its performance to a reduce group of retinal image with similar features.
For these reasons an unsupervised model for the analysis of retinal image is required, a model that can work without human supervision or interaction. And that is able to perform on retinal images with different characteristics. In this research, we have worked on the development of this type of model. The system locates the eye structures (e.g. optic disc and blood vessels) as first step. Later, these structures are masked out from the retinal image in order to create a clear field to perform the lesion detection.
We have selected the Graph Cut technique as a base to design the retinal structures segmentation methods. This selection allows incorporating prior knowledge to constraint the searching for the optimal segmentation. Different link weight assignments were formulated in order to attend the specific needs of the retinal structures (e.g. shape).
This research project has put to work together the fields of image processing and ophthalmology to create a novel system that contribute significantly to the state of the art in medical image analysis. This new knowledge provides a new alternative to address the analysis of medical images and opens a new panorama for researchers exploring this research area.Mexican National Council of Science and Technolog
NON-INVASIVE IMAGE DENOISING AND CONTRAST ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR RETINAL FUNDUS IMAGES
The analysis of retinal vasculature in digital fundus images is important for
diagnosing eye related diseases. However, digital colour fundus images suffer from
low and varied contrast, and are also affected by noise, requiring the use of fundus
angiogram modality. The Fundus Fluorescein Angiogram (FFA) modality gives 5 to
6 time’s higher contrast. However, FFA is an invasive method that requires contrast
agents to be injected and this can lead other physiological problems. A reported
digital image enhancement technique named RETICA that combines Retinex and ICA
(Independent Component Analysis) techniques, reduces varied contrast, and enhances
the low contrast blood vessels of model fundus images
