Predicting response time and error rates in visual search

A model of human visual search is proposed. It predicts both response time (RT) and error rates (RT) as a function of image parameters such as target contrast and clutter. The model is an ideal observer, in that it optimizes the Bayes ratio of target present vs target absent. The ratio is computed on the firing pattern of V1/V2 neurons, modeled by Poisson distributions. The optimal mechanism for integrating information over time is shown to be a ‘soft max’ of diffusions, computed over the visual field by ‘hypercolumns’ of neurons that share the same receptive field and have different response properties to image features. An approximation of the optimal Bayesian observer, based on integrating local decisions, rather than diffusions, is also derived; it is shown experimentally to produce very similar predictions to the optimal observer in common psychophysics conditions. A psychophyisics experiment is proposed that may discriminate between which mechanism is used in the human brain

Response-time analysis of DAG tasks supporting heterogeneous computing

Hardware platforms are evolving towards parallel and heterogeneous architectures to overcome the increasing necessity of more performance in the real-time domain. Parallel programming models are fundamental to exploit the performance capabilities of these architectures. This paper proposes a novel response time analysis (RTA) for verifying the schedulability of DAG tasks supporting heterogeneous computing. It analyzes the impact of executing part of the DAG in the accelerator device. As a result, the response time upper bound of the system is more precise than the one provided by currently existing RTA targeting homogeneous architectures. This work is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under contract TIN2015-65316-PPeer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Response-Time Analysis of Multipath Flows in Hierarchically-Scheduled Time-Partitioned Distributed Real-Time Systems

Modern industrial cyberphisical systems exhibit increasingly complex execution patterns like multipath end-to-end flows, that force the real-time community to extend the schedulability analysis methods to include these patterns. Only then it is possible to ensure that applications meet their deadlines even in the worst-case scenario. As a driving motivation, we present a real industrial application with safety requirements, that needs to be re-factored in order to leverage the features of new execution paradigms such as time partitioning. In this context we develop a new response-time analysis technique that provides the capacity of obtaining the worst-case response time of multipath flows in time-partitioned hierarchical schedulers and also in general fixed-priority (FP) real-time systems. We show that the results obtained with the new analysis reduce the pessimism of the currently used holistic analysis approach. This work was supported in part by the Doctorados Industriales 2018 program from the University of Cantabria and the Spanish Government and FEDER funds (AEI/FEDER, UE) under Grant TIN2017-86520-C3-3-R (PRECON-I4)

Intrinsic response time of graphene photodetectors

    Get PDF
Graphene-based photodetectors are promising new devices for high-speed optoelectronic applications. However, despite recent efforts, it is not clear what determines the ultimate speed limit of these devices. Here, we present measurements of the intrinsic response time of metal-graphene-metal photodetectors with monolayer graphene using an optical correlation technique with ultrashort laser pulses. We obtain a response time of 2.1 ps that is mainly given by the short lifetime of the photogenerated carriers. This time translates into a bandwidth of ~262 GHz. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of the response time on gate voltage and illumination laser power
