Space environmental effects on graphite-epoxy compressive properties and epoxy tensile properties
This study characterizes the effects of electron radiation and temperature on a graphite-epoxy composite material. Compressive properties of the T300/934 material system were obtained at -250 F (-157 C), room temperature, and 250 F (121 C). Tensile specimens of the Fiberite 934 epoxy resin were fabricated and tested at room temperature and 250 F (121 C). Testing was conducted in the baseline (nonirradiated) and irradiated conditions. The radiation exposure was designed to simulate 30 year, worst-case exposure in geosynchronous Earth orbit. Mechanical properties tended to degrade at elevated temperature and improve at cryogenic temperature. Irradiation generally degraded properties at all temperatures
LDEF: A bibliography with abstracts
The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was a free-flying cylindrical structure that housed self-contained experiments in trays mounted on the exterior of the structure. Launched into orbit from the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984, the LDEF spent almost six years in space before being recovered in 1990. The 57 experiments investigated the effects of the low earth orbit environment on materials, coatings, electronics, thermal systems, seeds, and optics. It also carried experiments that measured crystals growth, cosmic radiation, and micrometeoroids. This bibliography contains 435 selected records from the NASA aerospace database covering the years 1973 through June of 1992. The citations are arranged within subject categories by author and date of publication
Response of selected plant and insect species to simulated solid rocket exhaust mixtures and to exhaust components from solid rocket fuels
The effects of solid rocket fuel (SRF) exhaust on selected plant and and insect species in the Merritt Island, Florida area was investigated in order to determine if the exhaust clouds generated by shuttle launches would adversely affect the native, plants of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, the citrus production, or the beekeeping industry of the island. Conditions were simulated in greenhouse exposure chambers and field chambers constructed to model the ideal continuous stirred tank reactor. A plant exposure system was developed for dispensing and monitoring the two major chemicals in SRF exhaust, HCl and Al203, and for dispensing and monitoring SRF exhaust (controlled fuel burns). Plants native to Merritt Island, Florida were grown and used as test species. Dose-response relationships were determined for short term exposure of selected plant species to HCl, Al203, and mixtures of the two to SRF exhaust
Effects of BPA in snails : Oehlmann et al. respond
We welcome critical appraisals that help to provide balance; however, Dietrich et al. gave an unjustified reproach. We feel that Dietrich’s position is severely compromised because he serves as an expert for the bisphenol A (BPA) Industry Group (Brussels, Belgium). We would like to respond to the issues raised by Dietrich et al., as well as to their oversights and inappropriate interpretations of our findings..
A Method to Evaluate the Stimulation of a Real World Field of View by Means of a Spectroradiometric Analysis
Stimulation elicited by a real world field of view is related to the color, the intensity and the direction of the information reaching the eye: different spectral power distributions of light trigger different responses. An evaluation of the stimulation provided by the field of view can be performed by measuring the spectral radiance with a spectroradiometer and weighting this data with an efficiency curve. Different weights (physical, physiological and psychological) can lead to different analyses and consequently to different results. The proposed method allows an overall and simplified evaluation of the field of view based on spectral and luminance measures and a script that processes the luminous information. The final aim of this approach is to provide further information about the light stimulation reaching the retina and to supply a qualitative evaluation of the field of view, allowing to know how much stimulation is coming from a certain area within the visual field depending on the type of surface, basing on spectral and directional information. This approach can have practical implications, allowing technicians and designers to take into consideration the possible visual fields, in order to properly shape the features of stimulation throughout the day, hence following a field of view-based dynamic design
Global sensitivity analysis of computer models with functional inputs
Global sensitivity analysis is used to quantify the influence of uncertain
input parameters on the response variability of a numerical model. The common
quantitative methods are applicable to computer codes with scalar input
variables. This paper aims to illustrate different variance-based sensitivity
analysis techniques, based on the so-called Sobol indices, when some input
variables are functional, such as stochastic processes or random spatial
fields. In this work, we focus on large cpu time computer codes which need a
preliminary meta-modeling step before performing the sensitivity analysis. We
propose the use of the joint modeling approach, i.e., modeling simultaneously
the mean and the dispersion of the code outputs using two interlinked
Generalized Linear Models (GLM) or Generalized Additive Models (GAM). The
``mean'' model allows to estimate the sensitivity indices of each scalar input
variables, while the ``dispersion'' model allows to derive the total
sensitivity index of the functional input variables. The proposed approach is
compared to some classical SA methodologies on an analytical function. Lastly,
the proposed methodology is applied to a concrete industrial computer code that
simulates the nuclear fuel irradiation

Risk Informed Support of Decision Making in Nuclear Power Plant Emergency Zoning - Generic Framework towards Harmonising NPP Emergency Planning Practices
The report provides a systematic overview of the essential aspects of risk informed support of decision making (RIDM) in nuclear power plant (NPP) emergency zoning (EZ) as a contribution to harmonising strategic practices in the area. Owing to the state-of-the-art understanding and increased characterisation of NPP severe accidents, overall management of them should be analysed as an integrated complex process. The interrelationship of NPP emergency operating procedures, safety and risk assessments, severe accident management guidelines, and emergency off-site actions should be planned and organised to minimize the consequences of such accidents. A deterministic approach, coupled with both probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) technology and PSA results can play significant role in the development of relevant nuclear utility, regulatory and all stakeholders policies. The report describes the background, objectives and current state of a corresponding activity within JRC-IE's Analysis and Management of Nuclear Accidents (AMA) Action on probabilistic safety / risk assessment methodologies and practices for RIDM approach applied to NPP EZ. The approach is interdisciplinary, based on integration of PSA technology, severe accident phenomenology, and radiological protection.JRC.F.4-Nuclear design safet
