    Solving package dependencies: from EDOS to Mancoosi

    Mancoosi (Managing the Complexity of the Open Source Infrastructure) is an ongoing research project funded by the European Union for addressing some of the challenges related to the "upgrade problem" of interdependent software components of which Debian packages are prototypical examples. Mancoosi is the natural continuation of the EDOS project which has already contributed tools for distribution-wide quality assurance in Debian and other GNU/Linux distributions. The consortium behind the project consists of several European public and private research institutions as well as some commercial GNU/Linux distributions from Europe and South America. Debian is represented by a small group of Debian Developers who are working in the ranks of the involved universities to drive and integrate back achievements into Debian. This paper presents relevant results from EDOS in dependency management and gives an overview of the Mancoosi project and its objectives, with a particular focus on the prospective benefits for Debian

    A data dependency recovery system for a heterogeneous multicore processor

    Multicore processors often increase the performance of applications. However, with their deeper pipelining, they have proven increasingly difficult to improve. In an attempt to deliver enhanced performance at lower power requirements, semiconductor microprocessor manufacturers have progressively utilised chip-multicore processors. Existing research has utilised a very common technique known as thread-level speculation. This technique attempts to compute results before the actual result is known. However, thread-level speculation impacts operation latency, circuit timing, confounds data cache behaviour and code generation in the compiler. We describe an software framework codenamed Lyuba that handles low-level data hazards and automatically recovers the application from data hazards without programmer and speculation intervention for an asymmetric chip-multicore processor. The problem of determining correct execution of multiple threads when data hazards occur on conventional symmetrical chip-multicore processors is a significant and on-going challenge. However, there has been very little focus on the use of asymmetrical (heterogeneous) processors with applications that have complex data dependencies. The purpose of this thesis is to: (i) define the development of a software framework for an asymmetric (heterogeneous) chip-multicore processor; (ii) present an optimal software control of hardware for distributed processing and recovery from violations;(iii) provides performance results of five applications using three datasets. Applications with a small dataset showed an improvement of 17% and a larger dataset showed an improvement of 16% giving overall 11% improvement in performance

    Hardware and software optimization of fourier transform infrared spectrometry on hybrid-FPGAs

    With the increasing complexity of today’s spacecrafts, there exists a concern that the on-board flight computer may be overburdened with various processing tasks. Currently available processors used by NASA are struggling to meet the requirements of scientific experiments [1, 2]. A new computational platform will soon be needed to contend with the increasing demands of future space missions. Recently developed hybrid field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) offer the versatility of running diverse software applications on embedded processors while at the same time taking advantage of reconfigurable hardware resources, all on the same chip package. These tightly coupled HW/SW systems consume less power than general-purpose singleboard computers (SBC) and promise breakthrough performance previously impossible with traditional processors and reconfigurable devices. This thesis takes an existing floating-point intensive data processing algorithm, used for on-board spacecraft Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, ports it into the embedded PowerPC 405 (PPC405) processor, and evaluates system performance after applying different hardware and software optimizations and architectural configurations of the hybrid-FPGA. The hardware optimizations include Xilinx’s floating-point unit (FPU) for efficient single-precision floating-point calculations and a dedicated single-precision dot-product co-processor assembled from basic floating-point operator cores. The software optimizations include utilizing a non-ANSI single-precision math library as well as IBM’s PowerPC performance libraries recompiled for double-precision arithmetic only. The outcome of this thesis is a fully functional, optimized FTIR spectrometry algorithm implemented on a hybrid-FPGA. The computational and power performance of this system is evaluated and compared to a general-purpose SBC currently used for spacecraft data processing.     Timing model derivation : pipeline analyzer generation from hardware description languages

    Safety-critical systems are forced to finish their execution within strict deadlines so that worst-case execution time (WCET) guarantees are a crucial part of their verification. Timing models of the analyzed hardware form the basis for static analysis-based approaches like the aiT WCET analyzer. Currently, timing models are hand-crafted based on frequently incorrect documentation causing the process to be error-prone and time-consuming. This thesis bridges the gap between automatic hardware synthesis and WCET analysis development by introducing a process for the derivation of timing models from VHDL specifications. We propose a set of transformations and abstractions to reduce the hardware design\u27s complexity enabling the generation of efficient and provably correct WCET analyzers. They employ an abstract interpretation-based simulation of program executions based on a defined abstract simulation semantics. We have defined workflow patterns showing how to gradually apply the derivation process to VHDL models, thereby removing timing-irrelevant constructs. Interval property checking is used to validate the transformations. A further contribution of this thesis is the implementation of a tool set that realizes the introduced derivation process and shows its applicability to non-trivial industrial designs in experimental evaluations. Influences on design choices to the quality of the derived timing model are presented building an informal predictability notion for VHDL.Sicherheits-kritische Systeme unterliegen oft der Einhaltung strikter Laufzeitschranken, weshalb zur Verifikation sichere Obergrenzen der Laufzeit im schlimmsten Fall (WCET) bestimmt werden. Zeitmodelle der analysierten Hardware sind hierbei die Grundlage für auf statischen Analysen basierende Verfahren. Aktuell werden solche Modelle händisch aus Handbüchern extrahiert, ein sehr zeitaufwändiger und fehleranfälliger Prozess. Diese Arbeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen automatischer Hardware-Synthese und der Entwicklung von WCET-Analysen durch die Einführung eines Ableitungsprozesses von Zeitmodellen aus VHDL-Spezifikationen. Transformationen und Abstraktionen werden zur Komplexitätsreduktion eingesetzt, um die Erzeugung von effizienten und beweisbar korrekten Analysatoren zu ermöglichen. Selbige bedienen sich abstrakter Interpretation von Programmausführungen basierend auf einer Simulations-Semantik. Definierte Arbeitsabläufe zeigen, wie man die Ableitung schrittweise auf VHDL-Modellen umsetzt und dadurch für das Zeitverhalten irrelevante Teile des Modells entfernt. Interval Property Checking gewährleistet hierbei, dass die Transformationen semantik-erhaltend sind. Eine Tool-Implementierung realisiert den vorgestellen Ableitungsprozess und unterstreicht seine Anwendbarkeit auf komplexe industrielle Designs durch experimentelle untersuchungen. Außerdem werden VHDL-Designentscheidungen hinsicht ihres Einflusses auf die Qualität des abgeleiteten Zeitmodells betrachtet

    It is a well known fact in the automotive industry that critical and costly delays in the development cycle of powertrain1 controllers are unavoidable due to the complex nature of the systems-on-chip used in them. The primary goal of this portfolio is to show the development of new methodologies for the fast and efficient implementation of next generation powertrain applications and the associated automotive qualified systems-on-chip. A general guideline for rapid automotive applications development, promoting the integration of state-of-the-art tools and techniques necessary, is presented. The methods developed in this portfolio demonstrate a new and better approach to co-design of automotive systems that also raises the level of design abstraction.An integrated business plan for the development of a camless engine controller platform is presented. The plan provides details for the marketing plan, management and financial data.A comprehensive real-time system level development methodology for the implementation of an electromagnetic actuator based camless internal combustion engine is developed. The proposed development platform enables developers to complete complex software and hardware development before moving to silicon, significantly shortening the development cycle and improving confidence in the design.A novel high performance internal combustion engine knock processing strategy using the next generation automotive system-on-chip, particularly highlighting the capabilities of the first-of-its-kind single-instruction-multiple-data micro-architecture is presented. A patent application has been filed for the methodology and the details of the invention are also presented.Enhancements required for the performance optimisation of several resource properties such as memory accesses, energy consumption and execution time of embedded powertrain applications running on the developed system-on-chip and its next generation of devices is proposed.
