    Feature Papers of Drones - Volume I

    [EN] The present book is divided into two volumes (Volume I: articles 1–23, and Volume II: articles 24–54) which compile the articles and communications submitted to the Topical Collection ”Feature Papers of Drones” during the years 2020 to 2022 describing novel or new cutting-edge designs, developments, and/or applications of unmanned vehicles (drones). Articles 1–8 are devoted to the developments of drone design, where new concepts and modeling strategies as well as effective designs that improve drone stability and autonomy are introduced. Articles 9–16 focus on the communication aspects of drones as effective strategies for smooth deployment and efficient functioning are required. Therefore, several developments that aim to optimize performance and security are presented. In this regard, one of the most directly related topics is drone swarms, not only in terms of communication but also human-swarm interaction and their applications for science missions, surveillance, and disaster rescue operations.     A Tabu Search Based Metaheuristic for Dynamic Carpooling Optimization

    International audienceThe carpooling problem consists in matching a set of riders' requests with a set of drivers' offers by synchronizing their origins, destinations and time windows. The paper presents the so-called Dynamic Carpooling Optimization System (DyCOS), a system which supports the automatic and optimal ridematching process between users on very short notice or even en-route. Nowadays, there are numerous research contributions that revolve around the carpooling problem, notably in the dynamic context. However, the problem's high complexity and the real time aspect are still challenges to overcome when addressing dynamic carpooling. To counter these issues, DyCOS takes decisions using a novel Tabu Search based metaheuristic. The proposed algorithm employs an explicit memory system and several original searching strategies developed to make optimal decisions automatically. To increase users' satisfaction, the proposed metaheuristic approach manages the transfer process and includes the possibility to drop off the passenger at a given walking distance from his destination or at a transfer node. In addition, the detour concept is used as an original aspiration process, to avoid the entrapment by local solutions and improve the generated solution. For a rigorous assessment of generated solutions , while considering the importance and interaction among the optimization criteria, the algorithm adopts the Choquet integral operator as an aggregation approach. To measure the effectiveness of the proposed method, we develop a simulation environment based on actual carpooling demand data from the metropolitan area of Lille in the north of France

    The Agricultural Spraying Vehicle Routing Problem With Splittable Edge Demands

    In horticulture, spraying applications occur multiple times throughout any crop year. This paper presents a splittable agricultural chemical sprayed vehicle routing problem and formulates it as a mixed integer linear program. The main difference from the classical capacitated arc routing problem (CARP) is that our problem allows us to split the demand on a single demand edge amongst robotics sprayers. We are using theoretical insights about the optimal solution structure to improve the formulation and provide two different formulations of the splittable capacitated arc routing problem (SCARP), a basic spray formulation and a large edge demands formulation for large edge demands problems. This study presents solution methods consisting of lazy constraints, symmetry elimination constraints, and a heuristic repair method. Computational experiments on a set of valuable data based on the properties of real-world agricultural orchard fields reveal that the proposed methods can solve the SCARP with different properties. We also report computational results on classical benchmark sets from previous CARP literature. The tested results indicated that the SCARP model can provide cheaper solutions in some instances when compared with the classical CARP literature. Besides, the heuristic repair method significantly improves the quality of the solution by decreasing the upper bound when solving large-scale problems.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figure

    A combinatorial auction-based approach for ridesharing in a student transportation system

    Here, a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to represent a transportation system of students traveling from/to a university campus. The concept of ridesharing is used and the mechanism of combinatorial auctions is incorporated within a routing-based model. The mathematical model is based on the vehicle routing problem along with appropriate constraints accommodating features that express the auction clearing phase. A hybrid heuristic-based optimization framework, that takes advantage of meta-heuristic algorithms to improve an initial solution, is also developed to solve large-sized instances of the problem. Three meta-heuristics, namely particle swarm optimization, dragonfly algorithm, and imperialist competitive algorithm, are implemented in the proposed framework, whose performances are assessed and compared. Moreover, two improvement heuristic procedures that attempt to improve the outcomes of the foregoing meta-heuristics are proposed and compared as well. © 2021 The Authors. This paper is a review of the complex dynamics of Internet traffic. Departing from normal treatises, we will take a view from both the network engineering and physics perspectives showing the strengths and weaknesses as well as insights of both.     The AddACO: A bio-inspired modified version of the ant colony optimization algorithm to solve travel salesman problems

    The Travel Salesman Problem (TSP) consists in finding the minimal-length closed tour that connects the entire group of nodes of a given graph. We propose to solve such a combinatorial optimization problem with the AddACO algorithm: it is a version of the Ant Colony Optimization method that is characterized by a modified probabilistic law at the basis of the exploratory movement of the artificial insects. In particular, the ant decisional rule is here set to amount in a linear convex combination of competing behavioral stimuli and has therefore an additive form (hence the name of our algorithm), rather than the canonical multiplicative one. The AddACO intends to address two conceptual shortcomings that characterize classical ACO methods: (i) the population of artificial insects is in principle allowed to simultaneously minimize/maximize all migratory guidance cues (which is in implausible from a biological/ecological point of view) and (ii) a given edge of the graph has a null probability to be explored if at least one of the movement trait is therein equal to zero, i.e., regardless the intensity of the others (this in principle reduces the exploratory potential of the ant colony). Three possible variants of our method are then specified: the AddACO-V1, which includes pheromone trail and visibility as insect decisional variables, and the AddACO-V2 and the AddACO-V3, which in turn add random effects and inertia, respectively, to the two classical migratory stimuli. The three versions of our algorithm are tested on benchmark middle-scale TPS instances, in order to assess their performance and to find their optimal parameter setting. The best performing variant is finally applied to large-scale TSPs, compared to the naive Ant-Cycle Ant System, proposed by Dorigo and colleagues, and evaluated in terms of quality of the solutions, computational time, and convergence speed. The aim is in fact to show that the proposed transition probability, as long as its conceptual advantages, is competitive from a performance perspective, i.e., if it does not reduce the exploratory capacity of the ant population w.r.t. the canonical one (at least in the case of selected TSPs). A theoretical study of the asymptotic behavior of the AddACO is given in the appendix of the work, whose conclusive section contains some hints for further improvements of our algorithm, also in the perspective of its application to other optimization problems
