Resource discovery in heterogeneous digital content environments
The concept of 'resource discovery' is central to our understanding of how users explore, navigate, locate and retrieve information resources. This submission for a PhD by Published Works examines a series of 11 related works which explore topics pertaining to resource discovery, each demonstrating heterogeneity in their digital discovery context. The assembled works are prefaced by nine chapters which seek to review and critically analyse the contribution of each work, as well as provide contextualization within the wider body of research literature. A series of conceptual sub-themes is used to organize and structure the works and the accompanying critical commentary. The thesis first begins by examining issues in distributed discovery contexts by studying collection level metadata (CLM), its application in 'information landscaping' techniques, and its relationship to the efficacy of federated item-level search tools. This research narrative continues but expands in the later works and commentary to consider the application of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), particularly within Semantic Web and machine interface contexts, with investigations of semantically aware terminology services in distributed discovery. The necessary modelling of data structures to support resource discovery - and its associated functionalities within digital libraries and repositories - is then considered within the novel context of technology-supported curriculum design repositories, where questions of human-computer interaction (HCI) are also examined. The final works studied as part of the thesis are those which investigate and evaluate the efficacy of open repositories in exposing knowledge commons to resource discovery via web search agents. Through the analysis of the collected works it is possible to identify a unifying theory of resource discovery, with the proposed concept of (meta)data alignment described and presented with a visual model. This analysis assists in the identification of a number of research topics worthy of further research; but it also highlights an incremental transition by the present author, from using research to inform the development of technologies designed to support or facilitate resource discovery, particularly at a 'meta' level, to the application of specific technologies to address resource discovery issues in a local context. Despite this variation the research narrative has remained focussed on topics surrounding resource discovery in heterogeneous digital content environments and is noted as having generated a coherent body of work. (In) formal classification : connecting formal and informal knowledge organization systems
Recent developments in knowledge organization systems (KOS) have added new dimensions to traditional classification practices, as knowledge is now not only organized by official committees and editors, but also by the users of these systems themselves.
The aim of this study is to provide new insights into mapping formally created knowledge organization systems to socially created knowledge organization systems. To this end, a literature review, a theoretical analysis and a practical analysis have been carried out. The theoretical analysis consists of a comparison between the knowledge structure of Freebase, a semantic encyclopedia based on Linked Open Data, and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), a traditional classification system. The practical analysis is based on a statistical mapping of Freebase “domains” to classes of the Dewey Decimal Classification, using information available in the WorldCat database. This analysis is of a quantitative nature.
The findings of this study can be approached on multiple levels. On a broad level, it shows that it is possible to map the structure of a socially created knowledge organization system to the structure of a traditional, formally created system, although the study also indicates that there are some fundamental differences in these systems that cannot be solved in an easy way. When we look at the level of the statistical mapping between Freebase and the DDC, this study shows that the mapping covers most of the available Freebase domains, and that it could feasible to use this approach on a broader scale. On the other hand, the study also shows that there are limits as to which features of Freebase's knowledge structure can be represented using the DDC.
Structure
This thesis starts with an outline of the topic and research questions, and continues with an extensive literature review, that discusses formally and socially created KOS, and theories and practices in mapping. Subsequently, the methodology is discussed, followed by a theoretical analysis of the structure of the DDC and Freebase, and a practical analysis based on a statistical mapping. Complete spatial safety for C and C++ using CHERI capabilities
Lack of memory safety in commonly used systems-level languages such as C and C++ results in a constant stream of new exploitable software vulnerabilities and exploit techniques. Many exploit mitigations have been proposed and deployed over the years, yet none address the root issue: lack of memory safety. Most C and C++ implementations assume a memory model based on a linear array of bytes rather than an object-centric view. Whilst more efficient on contemporary CPU architectures, linear addresses cannot encode the target object, thus permitting memory errors such as spatial safety violations (ignoring the bounds of an object). One promising mechanism to provide memory safety is CHERI
(Capability Hardware Enhanced RISC Instructions), which extends existing processor architectures with capabilities that provide hardware-enforced checks for all accesses and can be used to prevent spatial memory violations. This dissertation prototypes and evaluates a pure-capability programming model (using CHERI capabilities for all pointers) to provide complete spatial memory protection for traditionally unsafe languages.
As the first step towards memory safety, all language-visible pointers can be implemented as capabilities. I analyse the programmer-visible impact of this change and refine the pure-capability programming model to provide strong source-level compatibility with existing code. Second, to provide robust spatial safety, language-invisible pointers (mostly arising from program linkage) such as those used for functions calls and global variable accesses must also be protected. In doing so, I highlight trade-offs between performance and privilege minimization for implicit and programmer-visible pointers. Finally, I present
CheriSH, a novel and highly compatible technique that protects against buffer overflows between fields of the same object, hereby ensuring that the CHERI spatial memory protection is complete.
I find that the byte-granular spatial safety provided by CHERI pure-capability code is not only stronger than most other approaches, but also incurs almost negligible performance overheads in common cases (0.1% geometric mean) and a worst-case overhead of only 23.3% compared to the insecure MIPS baseline. Moreover, I show that the pure-capability programming model provides near-complete source-level compatibility with existing programs. I evaluate this based on porting large widely used open-source applications such as PostgreSQL and WebKit with only minimal changes: fewer than 0.1% of source lines.
I conclude that pure-capability CHERI C/C++ is an eminently viable programming environment offering strong memory protection, good source-level compatibility and low performance overheads

Factors Influencing Customer Satisfaction towards E-shopping in Malaysia
Online shopping or e-shopping has changed the world of business and quite a few people have
decided to work with these features. What their primary concerns precisely and the responses from
the globalisation are the competency of incorporation while doing their businesses. E-shopping has
also increased substantially in Malaysia in recent years. The rapid increase in the e-commerce
industry in Malaysia has created the demand to emphasize on how to increase customer satisfaction
while operating in the e-retailing environment. It is very important that customers are satisfied with
the website, or else, they would not return. Therefore, a crucial fact to look into is that companies
must ensure that their customers are satisfied with their purchases that are really essential from the ecommerce’s
point of view. With is in mind, this study aimed at investigating customer satisfaction
towards e-shopping in Malaysia. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed among students
randomly selected from various public and private universities located within Klang valley area.
Total 369 questionnaires were returned, out of which 341 questionnaires were found usable for
further analysis. Finally, SEM was employed to test the hypotheses. This study found that customer
satisfaction towards e-shopping in Malaysia is to a great extent influenced by ease of use, trust,
design of the website, online security and e-service quality. Finally, recommendations and future
study direction is provided.

Data Politics: Worlds, Subjects, Rights
Data has become a social and political issue not only because it concerns anyone who is connected to the Internet but also because it reconfigures relationships between states, subjects, and citizens. Just about every device is now connected to the Internet and generating vast quantities of digital traces about interactions, transactions and movements whether users are aware or not. What started as an ostensibly liberated space the Internet rapidly became the space over and through which governments and corporations began collecting, storing, retrieving, analysing, and producing data that analyses what people do and say on the Internet. This ranges from who communicates with whom, who goes where, and who says what – and much more besides. This is now being augmented with data that people produce about themselves, especially their relations, body movements and measurements; the amount and range of data that has become available is, as everyone now knows, staggering. This chapter introduces the main themes of the book to position these developments within a broad historical-sociological perspective and to articulate an international political sociology of data politics
