Learning from the Success of MPI
The Message Passing Interface (MPI) has been extremely successful as a
portable way to program high-performance parallel computers. This success has
occurred in spite of the view of many that message passing is difficult and
that other approaches, including automatic parallelization and directive-based
parallelism, are easier to use. This paper argues that MPI has succeeded
because it addresses all of the important issues in providing a parallel

Challenges and Work Directions for Europe
International audienceEmbedded Systems are components integrating software and hardware, that are jointly and specifically designed to provide a given set of functionalities. These components may be used in a huge variety of applications, including transport (avionics, space, automotive, trains), electrical and electronic appliances (cameras, toys, television, washers, dryers, audio systems, and cellular phones), process control (energy production and distribution, factory automation), telecommunications (satellites, mobile phones and telecom networks), security (e-commerce, smart cards), etc. We expect that within a short timeframe, embedded systems will be a part of virtually all equipment designed or manufactured in Europe, the USA, and Asia
Towards effective modeling and programming multi-core tiled reconfigurable architectures
For a generic flexible efficient array antenna receiver platform a hierarchical reconfigurable tiled architecture has been proposed. The architecture provides a flexible reconfigurable solution, but partitioning, mapping, modeling and programming such systems remains an issue. We will advocate a model-based design approach and propose a single semantic (programming) model for representing the specification, design and implementation. This approach tackles these problems at a higher conceptual level, thereby exploiting the inherent composability and parallelism available in the formalism. A case study illustrates the use of the semantic model with examples from analogue/digital co-design and hardware/software co-design
Reify Your Collection Queries for Modularity and Speed!
Modularity and efficiency are often contradicting requirements, such that
programers have to trade one for the other. We analyze this dilemma in the
context of programs operating on collections. Performance-critical code using
collections need often to be hand-optimized, leading to non-modular, brittle,
and redundant code. In principle, this dilemma could be avoided by automatic
collection-specific optimizations, such as fusion of collection traversals,
usage of indexing, or reordering of filters. Unfortunately, it is not obvious
how to encode such optimizations in terms of ordinary collection APIs, because
the program operating on the collections is not reified and hence cannot be
analyzed.
We propose SQuOpt, the Scala Query Optimizer--a deep embedding of the Scala
collections API that allows such analyses and optimizations to be defined and
executed within Scala, without relying on external tools or compiler
extensions. SQuOpt provides the same "look and feel" (syntax and static typing
guarantees) as the standard collections API. We evaluate SQuOpt by
re-implementing several code analyses of the Findbugs tool using SQuOpt, show
average speedups of 12x with a maximum of 12800x and hence demonstrate that
SQuOpt can reconcile modularity and efficiency in real-world applications.Comment: 20 page

From 08.06. to 13.06.2008, the Dagstuhl Seminar 08241 ``Transactional Memory: From Implementation to Application\u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl -- Leibniz Center for Informatics.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.
