Bid Optimization by Multivariable Control in Display Advertising
Real-Time Bidding (RTB) is an important paradigm in display advertising,
where advertisers utilize extended information and algorithms served by Demand
Side Platforms (DSPs) to improve advertising performance. A common problem for
DSPs is to help advertisers gain as much value as possible with budget
constraints. However, advertisers would routinely add certain key performance
indicator (KPI) constraints that the advertising campaign must meet due to
practical reasons. In this paper, we study the common case where advertisers
aim to maximize the quantity of conversions, and set cost-per-click (CPC) as a
KPI constraint. We convert such a problem into a linear programming problem and
leverage the primal-dual method to derive the optimal bidding strategy. To
address the applicability issue, we propose a feedback control-based solution
and devise the multivariable control system. The empirical study based on
real-word data from Taobao.com verifies the effectiveness and superiority of
our approach compared with the state of the art in the industry practices
Interpretable Predictions of Tree-based Ensembles via Actionable Feature Tweaking
Machine-learned models are often described as "black boxes". In many
real-world applications however, models may have to sacrifice predictive power
in favour of human-interpretability. When this is the case, feature engineering
becomes a crucial task, which requires significant and time-consuming human
effort. Whilst some features are inherently static, representing properties
that cannot be influenced (e.g., the age of an individual), others capture
characteristics that could be adjusted (e.g., the daily amount of carbohydrates
taken). Nonetheless, once a model is learned from the data, each prediction it
makes on new instances is irreversible - assuming every instance to be a static
point located in the chosen feature space. There are many circumstances however
where it is important to understand (i) why a model outputs a certain
prediction on a given instance, (ii) which adjustable features of that instance
should be modified, and finally (iii) how to alter such a prediction when the
mutated instance is input back to the model. In this paper, we present a
technique that exploits the internals of a tree-based ensemble classifier to
offer recommendations for transforming true negative instances into positively
predicted ones. We demonstrate the validity of our approach using an online
advertising application. First, we design a Random Forest classifier that
effectively separates between two types of ads: low (negative) and high
(positive) quality ads (instances). Then, we introduce an algorithm that
provides recommendations that aim to transform a low quality ad (negative
instance) into a high quality one (positive instance). Finally, we evaluate our
approach on a subset of the active inventory of a large ad network, Yahoo

A comparative study of the AHP and TOPSIS methods for implementing load shedding scheme in a pulp mill system
The advancement of technology had encouraged mankind to design and create useful
equipment and devices. These equipment enable users to fully utilize them in various
applications. Pulp mill is one of the heavy industries that consumes large amount of
electricity in its production. Due to this, any malfunction of the equipment might
cause mass losses to the company. In particular, the breakdown of the generator
would cause other generators to be overloaded. In the meantime, the subsequence
loads will be shed until the generators are sufficient to provide the power to other
loads. Once the fault had been fixed, the load shedding scheme can be deactivated.
Thus, load shedding scheme is the best way in handling such condition. Selected load
will be shed under this scheme in order to protect the generators from being
damaged. Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) can be applied in determination
of the load shedding scheme in the electric power system. In this thesis two methods
which are Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by
Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) were introduced and applied. From this thesis,
a series of analyses are conducted and the results are determined. Among these two
methods which are AHP and TOPSIS, the results shown that TOPSIS is the best
Multi criteria Decision Making (MCDM) for load shedding scheme in the pulp mill
system. TOPSIS is the most effective solution because of the highest percentage
effectiveness of load shedding between these two methods. The results of the AHP
and TOPSIS analysis to the pulp mill system are very promising
Multi-GCN: Graph Convolutional Networks for Multi-View Networks, with Applications to Global Poverty
With the rapid expansion of mobile phone networks in developing countries,
large-scale graph machine learning has gained sudden relevance in the study of
global poverty. Recent applications range from humanitarian response and
poverty estimation to urban planning and epidemic containment. Yet the vast
majority of computational tools and algorithms used in these applications do
not account for the multi-view nature of social networks: people are related in
myriad ways, but most graph learning models treat relations as binary. In this
paper, we develop a graph-based convolutional network for learning on
multi-view networks. We show that this method outperforms state-of-the-art
semi-supervised learning algorithms on three different prediction tasks using
mobile phone datasets from three different developing countries. We also show
that, while designed specifically for use in poverty research, the algorithm
also outperforms existing benchmarks on a broader set of learning tasks on
multi-view networks, including node labelling in citation networks
Counting Triangles in Large Graphs on GPU
The clustering coefficient and the transitivity ratio are concepts often used
in network analysis, which creates a need for fast practical algorithms for
counting triangles in large graphs. Previous research in this area focused on
sequential algorithms, MapReduce parallelization, and fast approximations.
In this paper we propose a parallel triangle counting algorithm for CUDA GPU.
We describe the implementation details necessary to achieve high performance
and present the experimental evaluation of our approach. Our algorithm achieves
8 to 15 times speedup over the CPU implementation and is capable of finding 3.8
billion triangles in an 89 million edges graph in less than 10 seconds on the
