Succeeding with Smart People Initiatives: Difficulties and Preconditions for Smart City Initiatives that Target Citizens
Smart City is a paradigm for the development of urban spaces through the implementation of state-of-the-art ICT. There are two main approaches when developing Smart Cities: top-down and bottom-up. Based on the bottom-up approach, the concepts of Smart People and Smart Communities have emerged as dimensions of the Smart City, advocating for the engagement of citizens in Smart People initiatives. The aim of this research is both to find the types of Smart People initiatives and to identify their difficulties and preconditions for success. However, such initiatives that aim to (1) leverage the citizens intellectually and (2) use citizens as a source of input for ideas and innovation, are understudied. Therefore, this research proposes a concentrated framework of Smart People initiatives from an extensive literature review. On one hand, this framework contributes with a common ground and vocabulary that facilitates the dialogue within and between practitioners and academia. On the other hand, the identification of difficulties and preconditions guides the academia and practitioners in how to successfully account for citizens in the Smart City. From the literature review and the conduct of case studies of five European cities, participation came out as the key difficulty across both types of Smart People initiatives and cases, closely followed by awareness, motivation and complexity
The Listening Shift: Evaluating a Communication-Strategies Training Program for Telepractice Nurses Experiencing Hearing Challenges
Workers who wish to remain employed should be supported in doing so, even if they are experiencing age-related disabilities, such as hearing loss. I aimed to better understand the strategies from which workers with hearing loss might benefit, and how they can be supported in adopting these strategies. To collect rich data, I recruited telepractice nurses who rely on listening to make critical decisions about triaging and health care recommendations. My first research question was: What strategies exist for making telephone speech more intelligible for health care providers and patients with hearing challenges? I performed a scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute’s protocol. I identified 11 types of strategies, many of which required cooperation from, and disclosure to, providers’ employers, co-workers, and clients. This led me to consider the public narrative workers associated themselves with when they disclosed. Thus, my second research question was: How do Canadian newspapers portray workers with hearing loss? Through a thematic analysis of newspapers articles on this topic, I found they are predominantly portrayed as striving cheerfully both towards functioning normally and towards differentiating themselves and their hearing loss as unique and positive. To further explore how a subset of adults with hearing loss strive to work with a hearing loss, I developed an online communication-strategies training program tailored to nurses with hearing challenges. I then used a multiple case study to answer the following research question: How do nurses with hearing challenges change in terms of their telephone performance and workplace wellbeing in response to participation in an online communication strategies training program? Results suggested that nurses engaged in a problem-solving process before adopting strategies, and that strategy adoption could positively contribute to their performance. Together, the findings from these studies suggest that strategies exist to enhance the performance of workers with hearing loss, but the process of adopting these strategies can be demanding. Organizations should take steps to proactively support their nurses, health-care providers, and potentially other workers with hearing loss in identifying communication strategies and adapting them to their unique context
Health as a Determinant of Labor Market Attachment among Unemployed Job-seekers Participating in Active Labor Market Policy Measures in Finland
Toisaalta työllistymisen jälkeisistä työllisyysurista on niukasti tutkimustietoa.
Osatutkimusten I ja II aineistot olivat peräisin vuosina 2002-2003 aloitetusta ’Työuraterveydenhuolto’ – hankkeesta, jonka puitteissa tutkittiin terveydenhuolto-intervention vaikutuksia koeasetelmassa.
Poor health is a potential risk factor for being unemployed, but whether and how specific physical health problems affect employment status is largely unexplored. Moreover, little is known about the labor market attachment trajectories of re-employed people. This thesis investigated the association of muscular fitness (Study I) and musculoskeletal pain (Study II) with re-employment. The thesis characterized the labor market attachment trajectories of re-employed people and assessed whether specific chronic diseases (Study III) and previous sickness absence (Study IV) influenced these trajectories.
Data for Studies I and II were derived from the Career Health Care project, which was a three-year health intervention trial that was launched in 2002-2003. Participants in the project were unemployed people (n = 539) who took part in active labor market policy measures; they were subsequently followed up for three years. Survey questionnaire (sociodemographic characteristics, health status and employment history) and laboratory assessment (physical performance tests) were used to collect data. Data for Studies III and IV came from the register of the Finnish Public Sector study, which covered 10 municipalities in Finland. From that study, 18 944 long-term (> 12 months) unemployed people with first subsidized re-employment as fulltime employees in 1994-2005 were recruited and followed for six years. Logistic regression was used to investigate the determinants of re-employment and labor market attachment. Latent class growth model with Zero-Inflated Poisson was used to characterize labor market attachment trajectories.
In Study I, after adjusting for age and gender, compared to participants with poor fitness test performance, those with good performance in dynamic lift, sit-up, and squatting tests, were nearly five, seven, and nine times more likely to regain employment, respectively. In study II, both in results from complete-case and multiple-imputation analyses, participants with severe pain in the lower back were less likely to be re-employed than those without pain. In Studies III, four distinct labor market attachment trajectories were derived, namely: strengthening (a relatively stable attachment throughout the follow-up time, comprising 77% of participants), delayed (initial weak attachment increasing later; 6%), leavers (attachment declined with time; 10%), and noneattached (weak attachment throughout the study period; 7%). Those with severe mental problems (compared to those without) were more likely to belong in the “leavers” and “none-attached” trajectories. In Study IV, those with >30 days of sickness absence compared to those with 0-10 ≤ days of sickness absence were more likely to belong in the “leavers” and “none-attached” trajectories. The risk was particularly higher among people younger than 45 years compared to those aged 45-60 years.
Findings from these studies confirm that among unemployed people, poor health is a risk factor for subsequently finding a job. The results also demonstrated that the influence of poor health on future employment may depend on the type of health conditions. Sick unemployed people may face a double burden by virtue of their health and for the fact that they are not employed. It is important therefore to provide them with adequate support, including health care and rehabilitation in order to enhance their chances of gaining employment. Disentangling the specific health problems suffered by unemployed people may help to provide them with more targeted interventions, consequently increasing their employment outcomes
Towards a contextual understanding of B2B salespeople's selling competencies – An exploratory study among purchasing decision-makers of internationally-oriented technology firms
ABSTRACT
Towards a contextual understanding of B2B salespeople’s selling competencies − an exploratory study among purchasing decision-makers of internationally-oriented technology firms
The characteristics of modern selling can be classified as follows: customer
retention and loyalty targets, database and knowledge management, customer
relationship management, marketing activities, problem solving and system
selling, and satisfying needs and creating value. For salespeople to be
successful in this environment, they need a wide range of competencies.
Salespeople’s selling skills are well documented in seller side literature
through quantitative methods, but the knowledge, skills and competencies
from the buyer’s perspective are under-researched. The existing research on
selling competencies should be broadened and updated through a qualitative
research perspective due to the dynamic nature and the contextual dependence
of selling competencies.
The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of the professional
salesperson’s selling competencies from the industrial purchasing decision-
makers’ viewpoint within the relationship selling context. In this study,
competencies are defined as sales-related knowledge and skills. The scope of
the study includes goods, materials and services managed by a company’s
purchasing function and used by an organization on a daily basis.
The abductive approach and ‘systematic combining’ have been applied as a
research strategy. In this research, data were generated through semi-
structured, person-to-person interviews and open-ended questions. The study
was conducted among purchasing decision-makers in the technology industry
in Finland. The branches consisted of the electronics and electro-technical
industries and the mechanical engineering and metals industries. A total of 30
companies and one purchasing decision-maker from each company were
purposively chosen for the sampling. The sample covers different company
sizes based on their revenues, their differing structures – varying from public
to family companies –that represent domestic and international ownerships.
Before analyzing the data, they were organized by the purchasing orientations
of the buyers: the buying, procurement or supply management orientation.
Thematic analysis was chosen as the analysis method. After analyzing the
data, the results were contrasted with the theory. There was a continuous
interaction between the empirical data and the theory.
Based on the findings, a total of 19 major knowledge and skills were
identified from the buyers’ perspective. The specific knowledge and skills
from the viewpoint of customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations were
divided into two categories, generic and contextual. The generic knowledge
and skills apply to all purchasing orientations, and the contextual knowledge
and skills depend on customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations. Generic
knowledge and skills relate to price setting, negotiation, communication and
interaction skills, while contextual ones relate to knowledge brokering, ability
to present solutions and relationship skills. Buying-oriented buyers value
salespeople who are ‘action oriented experts, however at a bit of an arm’s
length’, procurement buyers value salespeople who are ‘experts deeply
dedicated to the customer and fostering the relationship’ and supply
management buyers value salespeople who are ‘corporate-oriented experts’. In
addition, the buyer’s perceptions on knowledge and selling skills differ from
the seller’s ones. The buyer side emphasizes managing the subject matter,
consisting of the expertise, understanding the customers’ business and needs,
creating a customized solution and creating value, reliability and an ability to
build long-term relationships, while the seller side emphasizes communica-
tion, interaction and salesmanship skills.
The study integrates the selling skills of the current three-component
model− technical knowledge, salesmanship skills, interpersonal skills− and
relationship skills and purchasing orientations, into a selling competency
model. The findings deepen and update the content of these knowledges and
skills in the B2B setting and create new insights into them from the buyer’s
perspective, and thus the study increases contextual understanding of selling
competencies. It generates new knowledge of the salesperson’s competencies
for the relationship selling and personal selling and sales management
literature. It also adds knowledge of the buying orientations to the buying
behavior literature. The findings challenge sales management to perceive
salespeople’s selling skills both from a contingency and competence
perspective. The study has several managerial implications: it increases
understanding of what the critical selling knowledge and skills from the
buyer’s point of view are, understanding of how salespeople effectively
implement the relationship marketing concept, sales management’s knowledge
of how to manage the sales process more effectively and efficiently, and the
knowledge of how sales management should develop a salesperson’s selling
competencies when managing and developing the sales force.

Kohti B2B-myyjän myyntikompetenssien tilannekohtaista ymmärrystä − eksploratiivinen tutkimus kansainvälisesti suuntautuneiden teknologiayritysten ostopäätöksentekijöiden keskuudessa
Nykyaikaisen myynnin tunnusmerkkejä ovat: asiakaspysyvyys- ja uskollisuus-
tavoitteet, tietokannan hallinta ja tiedonhallinta, ongelmanratkaisu- ja järjestel-
mämyynti, asiakastarpeiden tyydyttäminen ja arvon luominen. Menestyäkseen
tässä ympäristössä myyjät tarvitsevat monipuolisia kompetensseja. Myyjien
myyntitaitoja on hyvin dokumentoitu myyjien keskuudessa kvantitatiivisilla
menetelmillä tehdyissä tutkimuksissa. Sitä vastoin myyjän tietoja, myynti-
taitoja ja -kompetensseja on niukasti tutkittu ostajan näkökulmasta. Myynti-
kompetenssien kontekstiriippuvaisuuden ja dynaamisen luonteen takia niiden
ymmärrystä tulee laajentaa ja päivittää laadullisella tutkimusotteella.
Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on lisätä asiantuntijamyyjien myyntikompetenssien
ymmärrystä teollisuuden ostopäätöksentekijöiden näkökulmasta suhdemyyn-
nin kontekstissa.
combining”). Tutkimuksen aineisto luotiin käyttämällä puolistrukturoitua hen-
kilökohtaista haastattelumenetelmää. Tutkimus suoritettiin teknologiateol-
lisuusyritysten hankinnoista päättävien henkilöiden keskuudessa Suomessa.
Yritykset edustivat elektroniikka-, sähkötekniikka-, koneenrakennus- ja
metallien jalostuksen toimialaa. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin harkinnanvaraista
otantaa ja siihen valittiin tarkoituksenmukaisesti kolmenkymmenen yrityksen
ostopäätöksentekijät. Yritykset vaihtelivat kooltaan ja yritysmuodoltaan sekä
jakautuivat omistussuhteiltaan kotimaisiin ja kansainvälisiin yrityksiin. Ennen
aineiston analyysia se organisoitiin ostajien osto-orientaatioiden mukaisesti
osto-, hankinta- tai toimittajahallintaorientaatioon kuuluvaksi. Aineiston
analyysissä käytettiin teema-analyysimenetelmää. Analyysituloksia verrattiin
aikaisempaan teoriaan systemaattisesti. Empiirisen aineiston ja teorian välillä
oli jatkuva vuorovaikutus.
Tutkimustulosten perusteella voitiin tunnistaa ostajan näkökulmasta 19
ylätason tietoa ja taitoa. Ostajan osto-orientaatioittain tunnistetut spesifiset
neita asiantuntijoita”. Toimittajahallintaorientaatiota edustavat ostajat arvos-
tavat myyjiä, jotka ovat ”yritystason asiantuntijoita”. Lisäksi ostajien näke-
mykset myyjän tiedoista ja taidoista eroavat myyjien ja myynnin johdon
näkemyksistä. Ostajat painottavat substanssiosaamista kuten asiantuntijuutta,
kykyä ymmärtää asiakkaan liiketoimintaa ja tarpeita, kykyä luoda asiakas-
kohtaisia ratkaisuja, kykyä luoda arvoa, luotettavuutta ja kykyä rakentaa
pitkäaikaisia asiakassuhteita. Sitä vastoin myyjät ja myynnin johto korostavat
kommunikointi-, vuorovaikutus- ja myyntiprosessitaitoja.
Tutkimus yhdistää myyntitaitojen vallitsevan kolmen komponentin mallin
koostuen teknisestä tiedosta, myyntiprosessi- ja ihmissuhdetaidoista sekä
asiakassuhdetaidot ja ostajien osto-orientaatiot myyntikompetenssimalliksi.
Tutkimustulokset syventävät ja päivittävät myyntikompetenssit B2B-ympäris-
tössä ja luovat uusia näkökulmia niihin ostajien perspektiivistä lisäten täten
myyntikompetenssien kontekstuaalista ymmärrystä. Tutkimus luo uutta tietoa
myyjän kompetensseista suhdemyynnin, henkilökohtaisen myynnin ja myyn-
ninjohdon kirjallisuuteen. Se lisää myös tietoa osto-orientaatioista ostokirjalli-
suuteen. Sillä on useita seuraamuksia myynnin johdolle.
