Enabling pervasive computing with smart phones
The authors discuss their experience with a number of mobile telephony projects carried out in the context of the European Union Information Society Technologies research program, which aims to develop mobile information services. They identify areas where use of smart phones can enable pervasive computing and offer practical advice in terms of lessons learned. To this end, they first look at the mobile telephone as * the end point of a mobile information service,* the control device for ubiquitous systems management and configuration,* the networking hub for personal and body area networks, and* identification tokens. They conclude with a discussion of business and practical issues that play a significant role in deploying research systems in realistic situations
Building a JMX management interface inside OSGi
The «pervasive computing» will allow users to be able to utilize various applications through functional objects anytime and anywhere. Since pervasive computing is intrinsically highly dynamic and heterogeneous, applications should becomes «context-dependent » and able to change their functionality depending on dynamically changing user context. In a pervasive computing context, one must pay attention to the management part, inherent to the service deployment process. A automatic way to instrument and allow remote management control of distributed services becomes mandatory. This paper describes a supervising architecture for service oriented application in order to design and deploy context aware applications suitable to a ubiquitous Internet
System Support for Managing Invalid Bindings
Context-aware adaptation is a central aspect of pervasive computing
applications, enabling them to adapt and perform tasks based on contextual
information. One of the aspects of context-aware adaptation is reconfiguration
in which bindings are created between application component and remote services
in order to realize new behaviour in response to contextual information.
Various research efforts provide reconfiguration support and allow the
development of adaptive context-aware applications from high-level
specifications, but don't consider failure conditions that might arise during
execution of such applications, making bindings between application and remote
services invalid. To this end, we propose and implement our design approach to
reconfiguration to manage invalid bindings. The development and modification of
adaptive context-aware applications is a complex task, and an issue of an
invalidity of bindings further complicates development efforts. To reduce the
development efforts, our approach provides an application-transparent solution
where the issue of the invalidity of bindings is handled by our system,
Policy-Based Contextual Reconfiguration and Adaptation (PCRA), not by an
application developer. In this paper, we present and describe our approach to
managing invalid bindings and compare it with other approaches to this problem.
We also provide performance evaluation of our approach

Prototyping a Context-Aware Framework for Pervasive Entertainment Applications
Social issues of power harvesting as key enables of WSN in pervasive computing
Pervasive systems have gained popularity and open the door to new applications that will improve the quality of life of the users. Additionally, the implementation of such systems over an infrastructure of Wireless Sensor Networks has been proven to be very powerful. To deal with the WSN problems related to the battery of the elements or nodes that constitute the WSN, Power Harvesting techniques arise as good candidates. With PH each node can extract the energy from the surrounding environment. However, this energy source could not be constant, affecting the continuity and quality of the services provided. This behavior can have a negative impact on the user's perception about the system, which could be perceived as unreliable or faulty. In the current paper, some related works regarding pervasive systems within the home environment are referenced to extrapolate the conclusions and problems to the paradigm of Power Harvesting Pervasive Systems from the user perspective. Besides, the paper speculates about the approach and methods to overcome these potential problems and presents the design trends that could be followed.<br/
Adaptive online deployment for resource constrained mobile smart clients
Nowadays mobile devices are more and more used as a platform for applications. Contrary to prior generation handheld devices configured with a predefined set of applications, today leading edge devices provide a platform for flexible and customized application deployment. However, these applications have to deal with the limitations (e.g. CPU speed, memory) of these mobile devices and thus cannot handle complex tasks. In order to cope with the handheld limitations and the ever changing device context (e.g. network connections, remaining battery time, etc.) we present a middleware solution that dynamically offloads parts of the software to the most appropriate server. Without a priori knowledge of the application, the optimal deployment is calculated, that lowers the cpu usage at the mobile client, whilst keeping the used bandwidth minimal. The information needed to calculate this optimum is gathered on the fly from runtime information. Experimental results show that the proposed solution enables effective execution of complex applications in a constrained environment. Moreover, we demonstrate that the overhead from the middleware components is below 2%
The Role of Web Services at Home
The increase in computational power and the networking abilities of home appliances are revolutionizing the way we interact with our homes. This trend is growing stronger and opening a number of technological challenges. From the point of view of distributed systems, there is a need to design architectures for enhancing the comfort and safety of the home, which deal with issues of heterogeneity, scalability and openness. By considering the evolution of domotic research and projects, we advocate a role for web services in the domestic network, and propose an infrastructure based on web services. As a case study, we present an implementation for monitoring the health of an elder adult using multiple sensors and clients
