    The area that this thesis covers is Voice over IP (or IP Telephony as it is sometimes called) over Private networks and not over the Internet. There is a distinction to be made between the two even though the term is loosely applied to both. IP Telephony over Private Networks involve calls made over private WANs using IP telephony protocols while IP Telephony over the Internet involve calls made over the public Internet using IP telephony protocols. Since the network is private, service is reliable because the network owner can control how resources are allocated to various applications, such as telephony services. The public Internet on the other hand is a public, largely unmanaged network that offers no reliable service guarantee. Calls placed over the Internet can be low in quality, but given the low price, some find this solution attractive. What started off as an Internet Revolution with free phone calls being offered to the general public using their multimedia computers has turned into a telecommunication revolution where enterprises are beginning to converge their data and voice networks into one network. In retrospect, an enterprise\u27s data networks are being leveraged for telephony. The communication industry has come full circle. Earlier in the decade data was being transmitted over the public voice networks and now voice is just another application which is/will be run over the enterprises existing data networks. We shall see in this thesis the problems that are encountered while sending Voice over Data networks using the underlying IP Protocol and the corrective steps taken by the Industry to resolve these multitudes of issues. Paul M. Zam who is collaborating in this Joint Thesis/project on VoIP will substantiate this theoretical research with his practical findings. On reading this paper the reader will gain an insight in the issues revolving the implementation of VoIP in an enterprises private network as well the technical data, which sheds more light on the same. Thus the premise of this joint thesis/project is to analyze the current status of the technology and present a business case scenario where an organization will be able to use this information

    Voice over IP (VoIP) is a real time application that allows transmitting voice through the Internet network. Recently there has been amazing progress in this field, mainly due to the development of voice codecs that react appropriately under conditions of packet loss, and the improvement of intelligent jitter buffers that perform better under conditions of variable inter packet delay. In addition, there are other factors that indirectly benefited VoIP. Today, computer networks are faster due to the advances in hardware and breakthrough algorithms. As a result, the quality of VoIP calls has improved considerably. However, the quality of VoIP calls under extreme conditions of packet loss still remains a major problem that needs to be addressed for the next generation of VoIP services. This thesis concentrates in making an analysis of the effects that network impairments, such as: delay, jitter, and packet loss have in the quality of VoIP calls and approaches to solve this problem. Finally, we analyze the impact of introducing forward error correction (FEC) Piggybacking and Reed Solomon codes for VoIP. To measure the mean opinion score of VoIP calls we develop an application based on the E-Model, and utilize perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ)

    The use of Voice over Wireless Local Area Network is seeing a meteoric rise in popularity as a result of its simplicity, non-intrusiveness, and cheap cost of implementation, as well as its low cost of maintenance, universal coverage, and fundamental roaming capabilities. Nevertheless, deploying Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a challenging task for many network managers, architects, planners, designers, and engineers. Because of this, there is a need for a guideline to design, model, and simulate the network before it is deployed.     The impact of implementation of VOIP in call centres : A Western Australia perspective

    By fostering the finalization of open standards and the convergence of voice, video and data, the internet protocol provides an ideal driver for the definition of the infrastructure of new multimedia and advanced communications applications (Adams & Bhalla, 2005). The key advantages of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoiP) for enterprises have been the promise of lower costs, infrastructure consolidation and increased flexibility. Carriers are also positioning VoiP as a cost-saving business solution. It is an application which seemed like a godsend to business and people alike who rely on telephony services (Blood, 2005). The aim of this study was to investigate what factors may influence the adoption of VoiP as a technology as a West Australia context. Specifically the research undertook a case study using an establish call centre in a government agency, City of Melville. The company is a provider of wide range of services including recreation centres, aquatic centres, libraries, creches, pre-school centres, community centres, food inspection services, citizenships, recycling, planning and building services, maintenance, streetscapes, landscaping disability services, immunisation clinics, cultural and educational centres, environmental preservation and management. This study analysed the steps through to adoption of VoiP and IP telephony from the original technology for the Melville City Council call centre. Also, the procedures towards acquisition and installation of the supporting framework that eases the implementation and day to day running are depicted. The main impacts on the company as a result of the implementation in terms of cost reduction and implications, staff satisfaction and benefits, ease of business operations has been reported in this study. Statistics of the business functions and operations based on VoiP solutions were critically analyzed. Results from the research suggested further research needs to be undertaken on factor affecting the adoption of VoiP in a Western Australia context

    Effective Project Management Office Processes and Technology Transfer: Implementation of an Avaya Voice Over Internet Protocol Telephony System in Mexico

    This project-thesis examines the technical requirements of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution and is it advantageous for a Multinational Corporation (MNC) to utilize the Project Management Office (PMO) processes as defined by the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI) to implement Information Technology (IT) projects and to transfer technology know how knowledge to its subsidiary in Mexico. To answer this question, an assessment of Cisco and Avaya VoIP telephony systems was completed. The assessment revealed Avaya offered more enhanced features and applications. The Avaya Communications Manager (CM) 450 gateway IP telephony system was selected. PMO processes were utilized to implement the G450 in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The project results revealed PMO processes were effective in successfully managing the implementation of the Avaya IP telephony system and for transferring technology know how to the Mexico subsidiary. In addition, the Avaya G450 features and applications improved business efficiencies and reduced communications expenses
