    A Reduced Reference Image Quality Measure Using Bessel K Forms Model for Tetrolet Coefficients

    In this paper, we introduce a Reduced Reference Image Quality Assessment (RRIQA) measure based on the natural image statistic approach. A new adaptive transform called "Tetrolet" is applied to both reference and distorted images. To model the marginal distribution of tetrolet coefficients Bessel K Forms (BKF) density is proposed. Estimating the parameters of this distribution allows to summarize the reference image with a small amount of side information. Five distortion measures based on the BKF parameters of the original and processed image are used to predict quality scores. A comparison between these measures is presented showing a good consistency with human judgment

    A statistical reduced-reference method for color image quality assessment

    Although color is a fundamental feature of human visual perception, it has been largely unexplored in the reduced-reference (RR) image quality assessment (IQA) schemes. In this paper, we propose a natural scene statistic (NSS) method, which efficiently uses this information. It is based on the statistical deviation between the steerable pyramid coefficients of the reference color image and the degraded one. We propose and analyze the multivariate generalized Gaussian distribution (MGGD) to model the underlying statistics. In order to quantify the degradation, we develop and evaluate two measures based respectively on the Geodesic distance between two MGGDs and on the closed-form of the Kullback Leibler divergence. We performed an extensive evaluation of both metrics in various color spaces (RGB, HSV, CIELAB and YCrCb) using the TID 2008 benchmark and the FRTV Phase I validation process. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework to achieve a good consistency with human visual perception.     On color image quality assessment using natural image statistics

    Color distortion can introduce a significant damage in visual quality perception, however, most of existing reduced-reference quality measures are designed for grayscale images. In this paper, we consider a basic extension of well-known image-statistics based quality assessment measures to color images. In order to evaluate the impact of color information on the measures efficiency, two color spaces are investigated: RGB and CIELAB. Results of an extensive evaluation using TID 2013 benchmark demonstrates that significant improvement can be achieved for a great number of distortion type when the CIELAB color representation is used

    Objective video quality metrics for HDTV services : a survey

    The exponential growth of video traffic is expected to reach 62% of the global Internet traffic by the end of 2015. This presents as a significant challenge for the television service providers who need to employ networking technologies to monitor specific Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as packet loss rate, jitter and delay, to ensure an acceptable level of quality. However, recent research has demonstrated that the quality experienced by the end-user does not correlate to the QoS parameters employed by most service providers. This paper investigates the correlation between the QoS parameters and the quality perceived by the end. user. These results indicate that although the QoS parameters may sometimes achieve high correlation with respect to the quality perceived by the viewer, they still have large variances. This suggests that the QoS parameters are not enough to quantify the subjective quality with a high level of confidence. This work further compares a number of existing objective video quality metrics. The results presented in this paper show that the Full-Reference Motion based Video Integrity Evaluation (MOVIE) metric and the Spatio-Temporal Reduced Reference Entropic Differences (STRRED) metric achieve excellent correlation with the subjective scores. This research also demonstrates that the STRRED metric and its derivatives have several advantages over the MOVIE metric since less information needs to be transmitted and it is less computationally intensive.peer-reviewe

    A reduced-reference perceptual image and video quality metric based on edge preservation

    In image and video compression and transmission, it is important to rely on an objective image/video quality metric which accurately represents the subjective quality of processed images and video sequences. In some scenarios, it is also important to evaluate the quality of the received video sequence with minimal reference to the transmitted one. For instance, for quality improvement of video transmission through closed-loop optimisation, the video quality measure can be evaluated at the receiver and provided as feedback information to the system controller. The original image/video sequence-prior to compression and transmission-is not usually available at the receiver side, and it is important to rely at the receiver side on an objective video quality metric that does not need reference or needs minimal reference to the original video sequence. The observation that the human eye is very sensitive to edge and contour information of an image underpins the proposal of our reduced reference (RR) quality metric, which compares edge information between the distorted and the original image. Results highlight that the metric correlates well with subjective observations, also in comparison with commonly used full-reference metrics and with a state-of-the-art RR metric. © 2012 Martini et al

    Edge Detection Techniques for Quantifying Spatial Imaging System Performance and Image Quality

    Measuring camera system performance and associating it directly to image quality is very relevant, whether images are aimed for viewing, or as input to machine learning and automated recognition algorithms. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is a well- established measure for evaluating this performance. This study proposes a novel methodology for measuring system MTFs directly from natural scenes, by adapting the standardized Slanted Edge Method (ISO 12233). The method involves edge detection techniques, to select and extract suitable step edges from pictorial images. The scene MTF aims to account for camera non-linear scene dependent processes. This measure is more relevant to image quality modelling than the traditionally measured MTFs. Preliminary research results indicate that the proposed method can provide reliable MTFs, following the trends of the ISO 12233. Further development and validation are required before it is proposed as a universal camera measuring technique

    Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Technique for Color Images based on HSI Colour Space

    A new full-reference Perceptual Image Quality Assessment (PIQA) technique based on Hue-Saturation-Intensity (HSI) transformation method for colour images is offered in this work. Fundamentally, it is combined with three approaches (colour transformation, histogram processing and Human Visual System (HVS) based weighting) and it uses the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain. The PIQA is composed of four phases. At the first phase, a colour image is transformed using the HSI because an important characteristic of eyes reaction to intensity of light and colour knowledge is used for quality assessment processes. All channels' DCT coefficients have been calculated at the second phase, because many specifications cannot be assessed in the spatial domain. At the third phase, histogram based quality assessment results are obtained by using histogram of each channel (Hue, Saturation and Intensity). These results are weighted for obtaining perceptual quality result taking into account the HVS specifications at the last phase because the human eye has different sensitivities to the intensity and the others (i.e., hue and saturation). Experimental outcomes about feasibility of the PIQA on test images under different deteriorations, both sensible by the HVS and with the same Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) result are offered.
