Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Distributed Space-Time Coding Based on Adjustable Code Matrices for Cooperative MIMO Relaying Systems
An adaptive distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme is proposed for
two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Linear minimum mean square error (MMSE)
receive filters and adjustable code matrices are considered subject to a power
constraint with an amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperation strategy. In the
proposed adaptive DSTC scheme, an adjustable code matrix obtained by a feedback
channel is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay node.
The effects of the limited feedback and the feedback errors are assessed.
Linear MMSE expressions are devised to compute the parameters of the adjustable
code matrix and the linear receive filters. Stochastic gradient (SG) and
least-squares (LS) algorithms are also developed with reduced computational
complexity. An upper bound on the pairwise error probability analysis is
derived and indicates the advantage of employing the adjustable code matrices
at the relay nodes. An alternative optimization algorithm for the adaptive DSTC
scheme is also derived in order to eliminate the need for the feedback. The
algorithm provides a fully distributed scheme for the adaptive DSTC at the
relay node based on the minimization of the error probability. Simulation
results show that the proposed algorithms obtain significant performance gains
as compared to existing DSTC schemes.Comment: 6 figure
Performance of Cross-layer Design with Multiple Outdated Estimates in Multiuser MIMO System
By combining adaptive modulation (AM) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol as well as user scheduling, the cross-layer design scheme of multiuser MIMO system with imperfect feedback is presented, and multiple outdated estimates method is proposed to improve the system performance. Based on this method and imperfect feedback information, the closed-form expressions of spectral efficiency (SE) and packet error rate (PER) of the system subject to the target PER constraint are respectively derived. With these expressions, the system performance can be effectively evaluated. To mitigate the effect of delayed feedback, the variable thresholds (VTs) are also derived by means of the maximum a posteriori method, and these VTs include the conventional fixed thresholds (FTs) as special cases. Simulation results show that the theoretical SE and PER are in good agreement with the corresponding simulation. The proposed CLD scheme with multiple estimates can obtain higher SE than the existing CLD scheme with single estimate, especially for large delay. Moreover, the CLD scheme with VTs outperforms that with conventional FTs
Iterative joint channel and data estimation for rank-deficient MIMO-OFDM
In this paper we propose a turbo-detected multi-antenna-multi-carrier receiver scheme. Following the philosophy of the turbo processing, our turbo MIMO-OFDM receiver comprises a succession of detection modules, namely the channel estimator, the space-time detector and the decoder, which iteratively exchange soft bit-related information and thus facilitate a substantial improvement of the overall system performance. In this paper we analyze the achievable performance of the iterative system proposed with the aim of documenting the various design trade-offs, such as the achievable error-rate performance, the attainable data-rate as well as the associated computational complexity. Specifically, we report a virtually error-free performance for a rate-1/2 turbo-coded 8x8-QPSK-OFDM system, exhibiting an effective throughput of 8*2/2=8 bits/sec/Hz and having a pilot overhead of only 10%, at SNR of 7.5dB and normalized Doppler frequency of 0.003, which corresponds to a mobile terminal speed of about 65 km/h
Low-complexity iterative frequency domain decision feedback equalization
Single-carrier transmission with frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) offers a viable design alternative to the classic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique. However, SC-FDE using a linear equalizer may suffer from serious performance deterioration for transmission over severely frequency-selective fading channels. An effective method of solving this problem is to introduce non-linear decision feedback equalization (DFE) to SC-FDE. In this contribution, a low complexity iterative decision feedback equalizer operating in the frequency domain of single-carrier systems is proposed. Based on the minimum mean square error criterion, a simplified parameter estimation method is introduced to calculate the coefficients of the feed-forward and feedback filters, which significantly reduces the implementation complexity of the equalizer. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed simplified design is similar to the traditional iterative block DFE under various multipath fading channels but it imposes a much lower complexity than the latter
