    A Computational Redundancy Reduction Approach for High performaice and Low Power DSP Algorithm Implementation

    In this paper, we present a general approach which specifically targets reduction of redundant computation in common d\u27igital signal processing (DSP) tasks such as filtering and matrix multiplication. The main idea presented in this work is to show that such tasks can be expressed as multiplication of vectors by scalars and fast multiplication can be achieved by sharing computation in such operations. The multiplication schemes considerably reduce redundant computation by decomposing the vectors in a manner which results in maximal computation sharing, thereby, resulting in a faster and potentially low-power implementation. Two decomposition approaches are presented, one based on a greedy decomposition and the other based on fixed-size lookup rule which lead to two multiplication architectures for scaling of vectors. Analysis of the proposed implementations shows a speed-up by a factor of up to 3 over a carry save array multiplier. Analog simulation of an example 8-bit multiplier shows a speed advantage by a factor of 1.85 and a power disadvantage of 1.9 over a conventional carry save array multiplier. Using voltage scaling, the power consumption of the example multiplier can be reduced to 56% of the carry save array multiplier

    Artificial neural networks acceleration on field-programmable gate arrays considering model redundancy

    Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have dramatically developed over the last ten years, and have been successfully applied in many important areas. A natural follow-up topic is to deploy ANNs to a wider range of hardware platforms. However, modern ANN models may aim for millisecond- or even nanosecond-level latency for each input processing while it is common for them to require million-level operations and gigabyte-scale data access for computing each input. This intrinsic high computational complexity introduces hardware challenges to the system implementation. Meanwhile, the integration of computing resources on hardware platforms is hampered by the slowing down of Moore’s Law. Therefore, it is important to study new design methods for ANN hardware systems that produce high model accuracy with low resource usage. Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a natural fit for this topic due to its reconfigurability and flexibility. These features of FPGA allow us to implement customised data paths and data representations on hardware, which makes it the primary platform in this research. The main topics discussed in this thesis include neural network redundancy and its impact on hardware systems. The main goal is to reduce hardware complexity by reducing neural network redundancy and maintaining accuracy at the same time. To achieve this, redundancy is firstly categorised into two types: model- and data-level. Then, each type is studied in isolation before both are combined in a single system design. First, to study model-level redundancy, an algorithm called dropout is implemented as a way to reduce model-level redundancy during training and used here to reduce hardware cost. Our proposed system achieves a 50% reduction in DSP usage and 33% to 47% fewer on-chip memory usage compared to conventional implementations. Second, in terms of data-level redundancy, we aim to study how data precision affects hardware cost and system throughput. Our experiments show that reduced-precision data present negligible or even no accuracy loss to full-precision data on the tested benchmarks. In particular, the 4-bit fixed point presents a good trade-off between model accuracy and hardware cost compared to other tested data representations. Third, we studied the interactive effect of reducing both model- and data-level redundancy and proposed a FPGA accelerator design for Redundancy-Reduced (RR-) MobileNet [Hea17]. Our proposed RR-MobileNet system achieves a state-of-the-art latency, 7.85 ms, for single image processing in ImageNet inference.     Autonomous Recovery Of Reconfigurable Logic Devices Using Priority Escalation Of Slack

    Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices offer a suitable platform for survivable hardware architectures in mission-critical systems. In this dissertation, active dynamic redundancy-based fault-handling techniques are proposed which exploit the dynamic partial reconfiguration capability of SRAM-based FPGAs. Self-adaptation is realized by employing reconfiguration in detection, diagnosis, and recovery phases. To extend these concepts to semiconductor aging and process variation in the deep submicron era, resilient adaptable processing systems are sought to maintain quality and throughput requirements despite the vulnerabilities of the underlying computational devices. A new approach to autonomous fault-handling which addresses these goals is developed using only a uniplex hardware arrangement. It operates by observing a health metric to achieve Fault Demotion using Recon- figurable Slack (FaDReS). Here an autonomous fault isolation scheme is employed which neither requires test vectors nor suspends the computational throughput, but instead observes the value of a health metric based on runtime input. The deterministic flow of the fault isolation scheme guarantees success in a bounded number of reconfigurations of the FPGA fabric. FaDReS is then extended to the Priority Using Resource Escalation (PURE) online redundancy scheme which considers fault-isolation latency and throughput trade-offs under a dynamic spare arrangement. While deep-submicron designs introduce new challenges, use of adaptive techniques are seen to provide several promising avenues for improving resilience. The scheme developed is demonstrated by hardware design of various signal processing circuits and their implementation on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA device. These include a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) core, Motion Estimation (ME) engine, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Filter, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) blocks in addition to MCNC benchmark circuits. A iii significant reduction in power consumption is achieved ranging from 83% for low motion-activity scenes to 12.5% for high motion activity video scenes in a novel ME engine configuration. For a typical benchmark video sequence, PURE is shown to maintain a PSNR baseline near 32dB. The diagnosability, reconfiguration latency, and resource overhead of each approach is analyzed. Compared to previous alternatives, PURE maintains a PSNR within a difference of 4.02dB to 6.67dB from the fault-free baseline by escalating healthy resources to higher-priority signal processing functions. The results indicate the benefits of priority-aware resiliency over conventional redundancy approaches in terms of fault-recovery, power consumption, and resource-area requirements. Together, these provide a broad range of strategies to achieve autonomous recovery of reconfigurable logic devices under a variety of constraints, operating conditions, and optimization criteria

    Toolflows for Mapping Convolutional Neural Networks on FPGAs: A Survey and Future Directions

    In the past decade, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in various Artificial Intelligence tasks. To accelerate the experimentation and development of CNNs, several software frameworks have been released, primarily targeting power-hungry CPUs and GPUs. In this context, reconfigurable hardware in the form of FPGAs constitutes a potential alternative platform that can be integrated in the existing deep learning ecosystem to provide a tunable balance between performance, power consumption and programmability. In this paper, a survey of the existing CNN-to-FPGA toolflows is presented, comprising a comparative study of their key characteristics which include the supported applications, architectural choices, design space exploration methods and achieved performance. Moreover, major challenges and objectives introduced by the latest trends in CNN algorithmic research are identified and presented.     Algorithm Development and VLSI Implementation of Energy Efficient Decoders of Polar Codes

    With its low error-floor performance, polar codes attract significant attention as the potential standard error correction code (ECC) for future communication and data storage. However, the VLSI implementation complexity of polar codes decoders is largely influenced by its nature of in-series decoding. This dissertation is dedicated to presenting optimal decoder architectures for polar codes. This dissertation addresses several structural properties of polar codes and key properties of decoding algorithms that are not dealt with in the prior researches. The underlying concept of the proposed architectures is a paradigm that simplifies and schedules the computations such that hardware is simplified, latency is minimized and bandwidth is maximized. In pursuit of the above, throughput centric successive cancellation (TCSC) and overlapping path list successive cancellation (OPLSC) VLSI architectures and express journey BP (XJBP) decoders for the polar codes are presented. An arbitrary polar code can be decomposed by a set of shorter polar codes with special characteristics, those shorter polar codes are referred to as constituent polar codes. By exploiting the homogeneousness between decoding processes of different constituent polar codes, TCSC reduces the decoding latency of the SC decoder by 60% for codes with length n = 1024. The error correction performance of SC decoding is inferior to that of list successive cancellation decoding. The LSC decoding algorithm delivers the most reliable decoding results; however, it consumes most hardware resources and decoding cycles. Instead of using multiple instances of decoding cores in the LSC decoders, a single SC decoder is used in the OPLSC architecture. The computations of each path in the LSC are arranged to occupy the decoder hardware stages serially in a streamlined fashion. This yields a significant reduction of hardware complexity. The OPLSC decoder has achieved about 1.4 times hardware efficiency improvement compared with traditional LSC decoders. The hardware efficient VLSI architectures for TCSC and OPLSC polar codes decoders are also introduced. Decoders based on SC or LSC algorithms suffer from high latency and limited throughput due to their serial decoding natures. An alternative approach to decode the polar codes is belief propagation (BP) based algorithm. In BP algorithm, a graph is set up to guide the beliefs propagated and refined, which is usually referred to as factor graph. BP decoding algorithm allows decoding in parallel to achieve much higher throughput. XJBP decoder facilitates belief propagation by utilizing the specific constituent codes that exist in the conventional factor graph, which results in an express journey (XJ) decoder. Compared with the conventional BP decoding algorithm for polar codes, the proposed decoder reduces the computational complexity by about 40.6%. This enables an energy-efficient hardware implementation. To further explore the hardware consumption of the proposed XJBP decoder, the computations scheduling is modeled and analyzed in this dissertation. With discussions on different hardware scenarios, the optimal scheduling plans are developed. A novel memory-distributed micro-architecture of the XJBP decoder is proposed and analyzed to solve the potential memory access problems of the proposed scheduling strategy. The register-transfer level (RTL) models of the XJBP decoder are set up for comparisons with other state-of-the-art BP decoders. The results show that the power efficiency of BP decoders is improved by about 3 times

    Design Exploration of an FPGA-Based Multivariate Gaussian Random Number Generator

    Monte Carlo simulation is one of the most widely used techniques for computationally intensive simulations in a variety of applications including mathematical analysis and modeling and statistical physics. A multivariate Gaussian random number generator (MVGRNG) is one of the main building blocks of such a system. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are gaining increased popularity as an alternative means to the traditional general purpose processors targeting the acceleration of the computationally expensive random number generator block due to their fine grain parallelism and reconfigurability properties and lower power consumption. As well as the ability to achieve hardware designs with high throughput it is also desirable to produce designs with the flexibility to control the resource usage in order to meet given resource constraints. This work proposes a novel approach for mapping a MVGRNG onto an FPGA by optimizing the computational path in terms of hardware resource usage subject to an acceptable error in the approximation of the distribution of interest. An analysis on the impact of the error due to truncation/rounding operation along the computational path is performed and an analytical expression of the error inserted into the system is presented. Extra dimensionality is added to the feature of the proposed algorithm by introducing a novel methodology to map many multivariate Gaussian random number generators onto a single FPGA. The effective resource sharing techniques introduced in this thesis allows further reduction in hardware resource usage. The use of MVGNRG can be found in a wide range of application, especially in financial applications which involve many correlated assets. In this work it is demonstrated that the choice of the objective function employed for the hardware optimization of the MVRNG core has a considerable impact on the final performance of the application of interest. Two of the most important financial applications, Value-at-Risk estimation and option pricing are considered in this work
