    A compact multi-chip-module implementation of a multi-precision neural network classifier

The design is based on a scalable systolic architecture with a user defined topology and arithmetic precision of the neural network.     High-performance acceleration of 2-D and 3D CNNs on FPGAs using static block floating point

    Over the past few years, 2-D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated their great success in a wide range of 2-D computer vision applications, such as image classification and object detection. At the same time, 3-D CNNs, as a variant of 2-D CNNs, have shown their excellent ability to analyze 3-D data, such as video and geometric data. However, the heavy algorithmic complexity of 2-D and 3-D CNNs imposes a substantial overhead over the speed of these networks, which limits their deployment in real-life applications. Although various domain-specific accelerators have been proposed to address this challenge, most of them only focus on accelerating 2-D CNNs, without considering their computational efficiency on 3-D CNNs. In this article, we propose a unified hardware architecture to accelerate both 2-D and 3-D CNNs with high hardware efficiency. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed accelerator can achieve up to 92.4% and 85.2% multiply-accumulate efficiency on 2-D and 3-D CNNs, respectively. To improve the hardware performance, we propose a hardware-friendly quantization approach called static block floating point (BFP), which eliminates the frequent representation conversions required in traditional dynamic BFP arithmetic. Comparing with the integer linear quantization using zero-point, the static BFP quantization can decrease the logic resource consumption of the convolutional kernel design by nearly 50% on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Without time-consuming retraining, the proposed static BFP quantization is able to quantize the precision to 8-bit mantissa with negligible accuracy loss. As different CNNs on our reconfigurable system require different hardware and software parameters to achieve optimal hardware performance and accuracy, we also propose an automatic tool for parameter optimization. Based on our hardware design and optimization, we demonstrate that the proposed accelerator can achieve 3.8-5.6 times higher energy efficiency than graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation. Comparing with the state-of-the-art FPGA-based accelerators, our design achieves higher generality and up to 1.4-2.2 times higher resource efficiency on both 2-D and 3-D CNNs

    3D-SoftChip: A novel 3D vertically integrated adaptive computing system [thesis]

    At present, as we enter the nano and giga-scaled integrated-circuit era, there are many system design challenges which must be overcome to resolve problems in current systems. The incredibly increased nonrecurring engineering (NRE) cost, abruptly shortened Time-to- Market (ITA) period and ever widening design productive gaps are good examples illustrating the problems in current systems. To cope with these problems, the concept of an Adaptive Computing System is becoming a critical technology for next generation computing systems. The other big problem is an explosion in the interconnection wire requirements in standard planar technology resulting from the very high data-bandwidth requirements demanded for real-time communications and multimedia signal processing. The concept of 3D-vertical integration of 2D planar chips becomes an attractive solution to combat the ever increasing interconnect wire requirements. As a result, this research proposes the concept of a novel 3D integrated adaptive computing system, which we term 3D-ACSoC. The architecture and advanced system design methodology of the proposed 3D-SoftChip as a forthcoming giga-scaled integrated circuit computing system has been introduced, along with high-level system modeling and functional verification in the early design stage using SystemC

    Design and Programming Methods for Reconfigurable Multi-Core Architectures using a Network-on-Chip-Centric Approach

    A current trend in the semiconductor industry is the use of Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) for a wide variety of applications such as image processing, automotive, multimedia, and robotic systems. Most applications gain performance advantages by executing parallel tasks on multiple processors due to the inherent parallelism. Moreover, heterogeneous structures provide high performance/energy efficiency, since application-specific processing elements (PEs) can be exploited. The increasing number of heterogeneous PEs leads to challenging communication requirements. To overcome this challenge, Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) have emerged as scalable on-chip interconnect. Nevertheless, NoCs have to deal with many design parameters such as virtual channels, routing algorithms and buffering techniques to fulfill the system requirements. This thesis highly contributes to the state-of-the-art of FPGA-based MPSoCs and NoCs. In the following, the three major contributions are introduced. As a first major contribution, a novel router concept is presented that efficiently utilizes communication times by performing sequences of arithmetic operations on the data that is transferred. The internal input buffers of the routers are exchanged with processing units that are capable of executing operations. Two different architectures of such processing units are presented. The first architecture provides multiply and accumulate operations which are often used in signal processing applications. The second architecture introduced as Application-Specific Instruction Set Routers (ASIRs) contains a processing unit capable of executing any operation and hence, it is not limited to multiply and accumulate operations. An internal processing core located in ASIRs can be developed in C/C++ using high-level synthesis. The second major contribution comprises application and performance explorations of the novel router concept. Models that approximate the achievable speedup and the end-to-end latency of ASIRs are derived and discussed to show the benefits in terms of performance. Furthermore, two applications using an ASIR-based MPSoC are implemented and evaluated on a Xilinx Zynq SoC. The first application is an image processing algorithm consisting of a Sobel filter, an RGB-to-Grayscale conversion, and a threshold operation. The second application is a system that helps visually impaired people by navigating them through unknown indoor environments. A Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor scans the environment, while Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) measure the orientation of the user to generate an audio signal that makes the distance as well as the orientation of obstacles audible. This application consists of multiple parallel tasks that are mapped to an ASIR-based MPSoC. Both applications show the performance advantages of ASIRs compared to a conventional NoC-based MPSoC. Furthermore, dynamic partial reconfiguration in terms of relocation and security aspects are investigated. The third major contribution refers to development and programming methodologies of NoC-based MPSoCs. A software-defined approach is presented that combines the design and programming of heterogeneous MPSoCs. In addition, a Kahn-Process-Network (KPN) –based model is designed to describe parallel applications for MPSoCs using ASIRs. The KPN-based model is extended to support not only the mapping of tasks to NoC-based MPSoCs but also the mapping to ASIR-based MPSoCs. A static mapping methodology is presented that assigns tasks to ASIRs and processors for a given KPN-model. The impact of external hardware components such as sensors, actuators and accelerators connected to the processors is also discussed which makes the approach of high interest for embedded systems

    High-Level Synthesis Based VLSI Architectures for Video Coding

    High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is state-of-the-art video coding standard. Emerging applications like free-viewpoint video, 360degree video, augmented reality, 3D movies etc. require standardized extensions of HEVC. The standardized extensions of HEVC include HEVC Scalable Video Coding (SHVC), HEVC Multiview Video Coding (MV-HEVC), MV-HEVC+ Depth (3D-HEVC) and HEVC Screen Content Coding. 3D-HEVC is used for applications like view synthesis generation, free-viewpoint video. Coding and transmission of depth maps in 3D-HEVC is used for the virtual view synthesis by the algorithms like Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR). As first step, we performed the profiling of the 3D-HEVC standard. Computational intensive parts of the standard are identified for the efficient hardware implementation. One of the computational intensive part of the 3D-HEVC, HEVC and H.264/AVC is the Interpolation Filtering used for Fractional Motion Estimation (FME). The hardware implementation of the interpolation filtering is carried out using High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools. Xilinx Vivado Design Suite is used for the HLS implementation of the interpolation filters of HEVC and H.264/AVC. The complexity of the digital systems is greatly increased. High-Level Synthesis is the methodology which offers great benefits such as late architectural or functional changes without time consuming in rewriting of RTL-code, algorithms can be tested and evaluated early in the design cycle and development of accurate models against which the final hardware can be verified
