Operating-system support for distributed multimedia
Multimedia applications place new demands upon processors, networks and operating systems. While some network designers, through ATM for example, have considered revolutionary approaches to supporting multimedia, the same cannot be said for operating systems designers. Most work is evolutionary in nature, attempting to identify additional features that can be added to existing systems to support multimedia. Analysis of a benchmark suite to evaluate mixed numeric and symbolic processing
The suite of programs that formed the benchmark for a proposed advanced computer is described and analyzed. The features of the processor and its operating system that are tested by the benchmark are discussed. The computer codes and the supporting data for the analysis are given as appendices
Pruning, Pushdown Exception-Flow Analysis
Statically reasoning in the presence of exceptions and about the effects of
exceptions is challenging: exception-flows are mutually determined by
traditional control-flow and points-to analyses. We tackle the challenge of
analyzing exception-flows from two angles. First, from the angle of pruning
control-flows (both normal and exceptional), we derive a pushdown framework for
an object-oriented language with full-featured exceptions. Unlike traditional
analyses, it allows precise matching of throwers to catchers. Second, from the
angle of pruning points-to information, we generalize abstract garbage
collection to object-oriented programs and enhance it with liveness analysis.
We then seamlessly weave the techniques into enhanced reachability computation,
yielding highly precise exception-flow analysis, without becoming intractable,
even for large applications. We evaluate our pruned, pushdown exception-flow
analysis, comparing it with an established analysis on large scale standard
Java benchmarks. The results show that our analysis significantly improves

Some design constraints required for the use of generic software in embedded systems: Packages which manage abstract dynamic structures without the need for garbage collection
The embedded systems running real-time applications, for which Ada was designed, require their own mechanisms for the management of dynamically allocated storage. There is a need for packages which manage their own internalo structures to control their deallocation as well, due to the performance implications of garbage collection by the KAPSE. This places a requirement upon the design of generic packages which manage generically structured private types built-up from application-defined input types. These kinds of generic packages should figure greatly in the development of lower-level software such as operating systems, schedulers, controllers, and device driver; and will manage structures such as queues, stacks, link-lists, files, and binary multary (hierarchical) trees.
