Learning physics in context: a study of student learning about electricity and magnetism
This paper re-centres the discussion of student learning in physics to focus
on context. In order to do so, a theoretically-motivated understanding of
context is developed. Given a well-defined notion of context, data from a novel
university class in electricity and magnetism are analyzed to demonstrate the
central and inextricable role of context in student learning. This work sits
within a broader effort to create and analyze environments which support

Not lost in translation: writing auditorily presented words at study increases correct recognition âat no costâ

Previous studies have reported a translation effect in memory, whereby encoding tasks that involve translating between processing domains produce a memory advantage relative to tasks that involve a single domain. We investigated the effects of translation on true and false memories using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) procedure [Deese, J. (1959). On the prediction of occurrence of particular verbal intrusions in immediate recall. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 58, 17â22; Roediger, H. L., III, & McDermott, K. B. (1995). Creating false memories: Remembering words not presented in lists. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, & Cognition, 21, 803â814]. Translation between modalities enhanced correct recognition but had no effect on false recognition. Results are consistent with previous research showing that correct memory can be enhanced âat no costâ in terms of accuracy. Findings are discussed in terms of understanding the relationship between true and false memories produced by the DRM procedure
Learning to be a Woodturner
National and international Government policies and reports suggest that lifelong learning is a necessity to promote the cultural, social, educational and vocational dimensions of a personâs life. Many community based organisations play a significant role in providing learning opportunities for adults and thus promote a broad lifelong learning agenda. One such organisation is the Woodturnersâ Society of Queensland (WSQ). The aim of the WSQ is the dissemination of information to its members (the majority of whom are over 50 years old) pertaining to the craft of woodturning in addition to providing workshops, seminars and training courses that help to develop and enhance their skills of woodturning. Via semi-structured interviews, the research reported in this paper explores the experiences of ten mature aged members of the WSQ with a view to examining not only their motivation to learn woodturning but also, and most importantly, the learning processes and activities they nominated as critical to their growth. Key factors that facilitated and inhibited the learning processes are identified and discussed. The paper concludes with implications that point to the need to support communities of practice
Learning from Physics Education Research: Lessons for Economics Education
We believe that economists have much to learn from educational research
practices and related pedagogical innovations in other disciplines, in
particular physics education. In this paper we identify three key features of
physics education research that distinguish it from economics education
research - (1) the intentional grounding of physics education research in
learning science principles, (2) a shared conceptual research framework focused
on how students learn physics concepts, and (3) a cumulative process of
knowledge-building in the discipline - and describe their influence on new
teaching pedagogies, instructional activities, and curricular design in physics
education. In addition, we highlight four specific examples of successful
pedagogical innovations drawn from physics education - context-rich problems,
concept tests, just-in-time teaching, and interactive lecture demonstrations -

Report a review of the concepts and definitions of the various forms of relational contracting
Partnering has been defined in many ways. It can be considered as an individual
project mechanism or can be considered as a long term strategy. Alliancing is
normally assumed to be a long term business strategy linking together client,
contractor and supply chain. Relational contracting goes further than this and brings
in the whole philosophy of the value chain and the linking of the interdependent parts
within the construction project as a key business objective. This document aims to
review existing definitions of these three concepts and present and overview of the
current state of-the-art in terms of their use and implementation. The document
should be useful for all of those project team members looking to sharpen their
understanding of the various concepts and will also provide a platform for debating
the current state of the definitions and implementations being used in Main Roads
and Public Works Departments
The free recall search process introduces errors in short term memory but apparently not in long term memory
Here it is reported that the free recall search process increases the error rate for short term memory (about 1% per second in data from Murdock & Okada (1970)) but not for long term memory (in data from McDermott (1996)). If the short term memory search process introduces random excitations, which would account for the search errors, the subjects should be unaware of making such errors. This is in agreement with DRM findings (Gallo, 2010) and the new finding that the error terminated distributions in Murdock (1962) are the same as those terminated by studied items
Hemispheric processing of memory is affected by sleep

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Sleep is known to affect learning and memory, but the extent to which it influences behavioural processing in the left and right hemispheres of the brain is as yet unknown. We tested two hypotheses about lateralised effects of sleep on recognition memory for words: whether sleep reactivated recent experiences of words promoting access to the long-term store in the left hemisphere (LH), and whether sleep enhanced spreading activation differentially in semantic networks in the hemispheres. In Experiment 1, participants viewed lists of semantically related words, then slept or stayed awake for 12 h before being tested on seen, unseen but related, or unrelated words presented to the left or the right hemisphere. Sleep was found to promote word recognition in the LH, and to spread activation equally within semantic networks in both hemispheres. Experiment 2 ensured that the results were not due to time of day effects influencing cognitive performance
