Assessment of the Impact of the USIU- Africa Digital Repository on Research Visibility and Webometric Ranking
Repositories have widely been acknowledged as ideal platforms for disseminating research findings from scholars in the different research spheres. Organizations that carry out ranking of academic institutions have as result utilized repository evaluation as a tool for determining research output of Institutions. Current Webometric ranking of Universities in the world focuses up to 30% of grading on repositories. This is because they depict the extent to which an institution is involved in research and scholarly addition to the body of knowledge. Universities across the globe have over the years taken initiatives to establish institutional repositories to host their in-house publications and to efficiently avail research findings to their users. Some institutions have embraced Open Access and gone a mile up to open their repositories giving full text access to the public domain in the web. USIU-Africa is yet to evaluate the gains realized by the establishment of the digital repository. The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which the USIU-Africa Digital Repository is enhancing visibility of University Research and faculty output and its bearing on University Webometric Ranking. The research will be conducted at USIU- Africa through a mixture of a qualitative and quantitative research methodology. Questionnaires will be distributed to the teaching staff; and views collected that will in turn be useful for the progression of this research. Findings will confirm the variables for the research, out of which the conclusions will be made to steer the way forward for this discussion. The findings of this study shed light on the progress of the new USIU-Africa repository; and will discuss its impact on Kenyan research, Faculty research and output and the University Webometric ranking
Improving Knowledge Retrieval in Digital Libraries Applying Intelligent Techniques
Nowadays an enormous quantity of heterogeneous and distributed information is stored in the digital University. Exploring online collections to find knowledge relevant to a user’s interests is a challenging work. The artificial intelligence and Semantic Web provide a common framework that allows knowledge to
be shared and reused in an efficient way. In this work we propose a comprehensive approach for discovering E-learning objects in large digital collections based on analysis of recorded semantic metadata in those objects and the application of expert system technologies. We have used Case Based-Reasoning
methodology to develop a prototype for supporting efficient retrieval knowledge from online repositories.
We suggest a conceptual architecture for a semantic search engine. OntoUS is a collaborative effort that
proposes a new form of interaction between users and digital libraries, where the latter are adapted to users
and their surroundings
Scientific Output from Latin America and the Caribbean – Identification of the Main Institutions for Regional Open Access Integration Strategies
Latin America is a region in which two thirds of the investment in research and development are funded by State resources. It can be foreseen that in the near future governments in the region will encourage and promote, or require by law or mandates, that scientific output from the region become visible and accessible in open access repositories and portals. This paper presents the results of a survey to identify the institutions of the region with the largest volume of scientific output and most exposure of their output on the Web, in order to help make those institutions visible to national, regional and international organizations involved in open access strategies and programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. The results show a leading position by universities from Brazil; a strong presence of universities from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela, and some presence of universities from Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Urugua
Porqpine: a peer-to-peer search engine
In this paper, we present a fully distributed and collaborative search
engine for web pages: Porqpine. This system uses a novel query-based model
and collaborative filtering techniques in order to obtain user-customized
results. All knowledge about users and profiles is stored in each user
node?s application. Overall the system is a multi-agent system that runs on
the computers of the user community. The nodes interact in a peer-to-peer
fashion in order to create a real distributed search engine where
information is completely distributed among all the nodes in the network.
Moreover, the system preserves the privacy of user queries and results by
maintaining the anonymity of the queries? consumers and results? producers.
The knowledge required by the system to work is implicitly caught through
the monitoring of users actions, not only within the system?s interface but
also within one of the most popular web browsers. Thus, users are not
required to explicitly feed knowledge about their interests into the system
since this process is done automatically. In this manner, users obtain the
benefits of a personalized search engine just by installing the application
on their computer. Porqpine does not intend to shun completely conventional
centralized search engines but to complement them by issuing more accurate

The Economists Online subject repository: using institutional repositories as the foundation for international Open Access growth
A new subject repository, Economists Online (EO), has recently been launched. The pioneering model upon which it is built, aggregating the subject specific content of a consortium of participating institutions and their repositories, is examined in this article. An overview of existing subject repositories is given, along with an analysis of the scholarly communications landscape in economics and how the new EO subject repository fits into this environment. Open source repositories: Implications for libraries
Software that is accepted as “Open source” should comply with 10 conditions which are itinerated in the paper. The
paper subsequently describes the application of open source initiatives in the digital library context. Three open source digital library initiatives developed by the Digital Library Research Group at the Faculty of Computer Science and information Technology, University of Malaya are highlighted. These are; (a) MyManuskrip: digital library of Malay manuscripts; (b) MyAIS : Digital library of Malaysian scholarly journals and conference proceedings; and (d)
DSpace@Um: a digital library of dissertations, theses and final year project reports. Other “free” systems such as
EJUM: electronic journal of university of Malaya is also described to highlight the slight difference between open source and being free. The paper also describes the libraries involved in the initiatives and the changing eco-system which libraries must accept to embrace the open source culture
Improving average ranking precision in user searches for biomedical research datasets
Availability of research datasets is keystone for health and life science
study reproducibility and scientific progress. Due to the heterogeneity and
complexity of these data, a main challenge to be overcome by research data
management systems is to provide users with the best answers for their search
queries. In the context of the 2016 bioCADDIE Dataset Retrieval Challenge, we
investigate a novel ranking pipeline to improve the search of datasets used in
biomedical experiments. Our system comprises a query expansion model based on
word embeddings, a similarity measure algorithm that takes into consideration
the relevance of the query terms, and a dataset categorisation method that
boosts the rank of datasets matching query constraints. The system was
evaluated using a corpus with 800k datasets and 21 annotated user queries. Our
system provides competitive results when compared to the other challenge
participants. In the official run, it achieved the highest infAP among the
participants, being +22.3% higher than the median infAP of the participant's
best submissions. Overall, it is ranked at top 2 if an aggregated metric using
the best official measures per participant is considered. The query expansion
method showed positive impact on the system's performance increasing our
baseline up to +5.0% and +3.4% for the infAP and infNDCG metrics, respectively.
Our similarity measure algorithm seems to be robust, in particular compared to
Divergence From Randomness framework, having smaller performance variations
under different training conditions. Finally, the result categorization did not
have significant impact on the system's performance. We believe that our
solution could be used to enhance biomedical dataset management systems. In
particular, the use of data driven query expansion methods could be an
alternative to the complexity of biomedical terminologies
LODE: Linking Digital Humanities Content to the Web of Data
Numerous digital humanities projects maintain their data collections in the
form of text, images, and metadata. While data may be stored in many formats,
from plain text to XML to relational databases, the use of the resource
description framework (RDF) as a standardized representation has gained
considerable traction during the last five years. Almost every digital
humanities meeting has at least one session concerned with the topic of digital
humanities, RDF, and linked data. While most existing work in linked data has
focused on improving algorithms for entity matching, the aim of the
LinkedHumanities project is to build digital humanities tools that work "out of
the box," enabling their use by humanities scholars, computer scientists,
librarians, and information scientists alike. With this paper, we report on the
Linked Open Data Enhancer (LODE) framework developed as part of the
LinkedHumanities project. With LODE we support non-technical users to enrich a
local RDF repository with high-quality data from the Linked Open Data cloud.
LODE links and enhances the local RDF repository without compromising the
quality of the data. In particular, LODE supports the user in the enhancement
and linking process by providing intuitive user-interfaces and by suggesting
high-quality linking candidates using tailored matching algorithms. We hope
that the LODE framework will be useful to digital humanities scholars
complementing other digital humanities tools
