    Iterative Determination of Distributions by the Monte Carlo Method in Problems with an External Source

    In the Monte Carlo (MC) method statistical noise is usually present. Statistical noise may become dominant in the calculation of a distribution, usually by iteration, but is less Important in calculating integrals. The subject of the present work is the role of statistical noise in iterations involving stochastic simulation (MC method). Convergence is checked by comparing two consecutive solutions in the iteration. The statistical noise may randomize or pervert the convergence. We study the probability of the convergence, and the correct estimation of the variance in a simplified model problem. We study the statistical properties of the solution to a deterministic problem with a stochastic source obtained from a stochastic calculation. There are iteration strategies resulting in non-convergence, or randomly stopped iteration.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nuclear Science and Engineerin

    Concepts for design of an energy management system incorporating dispersed storage and generation

    New forms of generation based on renewable resources must be managed as part of existing power systems in order to be utilized with maximum effectiveness. Many of these generators are by their very nature dispersed or small, so that they will be connected to the distribution part of the power system. This situation poses new questions of control and protection, and the intermittent nature of some of the energy sources poses problems of scheduling and dispatch. Under the assumption that the general objectives of energy management will remain unchanged, the impact of dispersed storage and generation on some of the specific functions of power system control and its hardware are discussed

    GA tuning of pitch controller for small scale MAVs

    The paper presents the application of intelligent tuning methods for the control of a prototype MAV in order to address problems associated with bandwidth limited actuators and gust alleviation. Specifically, as a proof of concept, the investigation is focused on the pitch control of a MAV. The work is supported by experimental results from wind tunnel testing that shows the merits of the use of Genetic Algorithm (GA) tuning techniques compared to classical, empirical tuning methodologies. To provide a measure of relative merit, the controller responses are evaluated using the ITAE performance index. In this way, the proposed method is shown to induce far superior dynamic performance compared to traditional approaches

    Advance prototype silver ion water bactericide system

    An advance prototype unit was designed and fabricated to treat anticipated fuel cell water. The unit is a single canister that contains a membrane-type prefilter and a silver bromide contacting bed. A seven day baseline simulated mission test was performed; the performance was satisfactory and the effluent water was within all specifications for potability. After random vibrations another seven day simulated mission test was performed, and results indicate that simulated launch vibrations have no effects on the design and performance of the advanced prototype. Bench tests and accelerated breadboard tests were conducted to define the characteristics of an upgraded model of the advance prototype unit which would have 30 days of operating capability. A preliminary design of a silver ion generator for the shuttle orbiter was also prepared

    Simulation of hydrogen auto-ignition in a turbulent co-flow of heated air with LES and CMC approach

    Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) with the first order Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) approach of a nitrogen-diluted hydrogen jet, igniting in a turbulent co-flowing hot air stream, are discussed. A detailed mechanism (nine species, 19 reactions) is used to represent the chemistry. Our study covers the following aspects: CFD mesh resolution; CMC mesh resolution; inlet boundary conditions and conditional scalar dissipation rate modelling. The Amplitude Mapping Closure for the conditional scalar dissipation rate produces acceptable results. We also compare different options to calculate conditional quantities in CMC resolution. The trends in the experimental observations are in general well reproduced. The auto-ignition length decreases with an increase in co-flow temperature and increases with increase in co-flow velocity. The phenomena are not purely chemically controlled: the turbulence and mixing play also affect the location of auto-ignition. In order to explore the effect of turbulence, two options were applied: random noise and turbulence generator based on digital filter. It was found that stronger turbulence promotes ignition
