    Ultra Low-Power Frequency Synthesizers for Duty Cycled IoT radios

    Internet of Things (IoT), which is one of the main talking points in the electronics industry today, consists of a number of highly miniaturized sensors and actuators which sense the physical environment around us and communicate that information to a central information hub for further processing. This agglomeration of miniaturized sensors helps the system to be deployed in previously impossible arenas such as healthcare (Body Area Networks - BAN), industrial automation, real-time monitoring environmental parameters and so on; thereby greatly improving the quality of life. Since the IoT devices are usually untethered, their energy sources are limited (typically battery powered or energy scavenging) and hence have to consume very low power. Today's IoT systems employ radios that use communication protocols like Bluetooth Smart; which means that they communicate at data rates of a few hundred kb/s to a few Mb/s while consuming around a few mW of power. Even though the power dissipation of these radios have been decreasing steadily over the years, they seem to have reached a lower limit in the recent times. Hence, there is a need to explore other avenues to further reduce this dissipation so as to further improve the energy autonomy of the IoT node. Duty cycling has emerged as a promising alternative in this sense since it involves radios transmitting very short bursts of data at high rates and being asleep the rest of the time. In addition, high data rates proffer the added advantage of reducing network congestion which has become a major problem in IoT owing to the increase in the number of sensor nodes as well as the volume of data they send. But, as the average power (energy) dissipated decreases due to duty cycling, the energy overhead associated with the start-up phase of the radio becomes comparable with the former. Therefore, in order to take full advantage of duty cycling, the radio should be capable of being turned ON/OFF almost instantaneously. Furthermore, the radio of the future should also be able to support easy frequency hopping to improve the system efficiency from an interference point of view. In other words, in addition to high data rate capability, the next generation radios must also be highly agile and have a low energy overhead. All these factors viz. data rate, agility and overhead are mainly dependent on the radio's frequency synthesizer and therefore emphasis needs to be laid on developing new synthesizer architectures which are also amenable to technology scaling. This thesis deals with the evolution of one such all-digital frequency synthesizer; with each step dealing with one of the aforementioned issues. In order to reduce the energy overhead of the synthesizer, FBAR resonators (which are a class of MEMS resonators) are used as the frequency reference instead of a traditional quartz crystal. The FBAR resonators aid the design of fast-startup oscillators as opposed to the long latency associated with the start-up of the crystal oscillator. In addition, the frequency stability of the FBAR lends itself to open-loop architecture which can support very high data rates. Another advantage of the open-loop architecture is the frequency agility which aids easy channel switching for multi-hop architectures, as demonstrated in this thesis

    Clock multiplication techniques for high-speed I/Os

    Generation of a low-jitter, high-frequency clock from a low-frequency reference clock using classical analog phase-locked loops (PLLs) requires a large loop filter capacitor and power hungry oscillator. Digital PLLs can help reduce area but their jitter performance is severely degraded by quantization error. In this dissertation different clock multiplication techniques have been explored that can be suitable for high-speed wireline systems. With the emphasis on ring oscillator based architecture using cascaded stages, three possible architectures are explored. First, a scrambling TDC (STDC) is presented to improve deterministic jitter (DJ) performance when used with a low-frequency reference clock. A cascaded architecture with digital multiplying delay locked loop as the first stage and hybrid analog/digital PLL as the second stage is used to achieve low random jitter in a power efficient manner. Fabricated in a 90nm CMOS process, the prototype frequency synthesizer consumes 4.76mW power from a 1.0V supply and generates 160MHz and 2.56 GHz output clocks from a 1.25MHz crystal reference frequency. The long-term absolute jitter of the 60MHz digital MDLL and 2.56 GHz digital PLL outputs are 2.4 psrms and 4.18 psrms, while the peak-to-peak jitter is 22.1 ps and 35.2 ps, respectively. The proposed frequency synthesizer occupies an active die area of 0.16mm2 and achieves power efficiency of 1.86 mW/GHz. Second, a hybrid phase/current-mode phase interpolator (HPC-PI) is presented to improve phase noise performance of ring oscillator-based fractional-N PLLs. The proposed HPC-PI alleviates the bandwidth trade-off between VCO phase noise suppression and ΔΣ quantization noise suppression. By combining the phase detection and interpolation functions into an XOR phase detector/interpolator (XOR PD-PI) block, accurate quantization error cancellation is achieved without using calibration. Use of a digital MDLL in front of the fractional-N PLL helps in alleviating the bandwidth limitation due to reference frequency and enables bandwidth extension even further. The extended bandwidth helps in suppressing the ring-VCO phase noise and lowering the in-band noise floor. Fabricated in 65nm CMOS process, the prototype generates fractional frequencies from 4.25 to 4.75 GHz, with an in-band phase noise floor of -104 dBc/Hz and 1.5 psrms integrated jitter. The clock multiplier achieves power efficiency of 2.4mW/GHz and FoM of -225.8 dB. Finally, an efficient clock generation, recovery, and distribution techniques for flexible-rate transceivers are presented. Using a fixed-frequency low-jitter clock provided by an integer-N PLL, fractional frequencies are generated/recovered locally using multi-phase fractional clock multipliers. Fabricated in a 65nm CMOS, the prototype transceiver can be programmed to operate at any rate from 3-to-10 Gb/s. At 10 Gb/s, integrated jitter of the Tx output and recovered clock is 360 fsrms and 758 fsrms, respectively

    Frequency Synthesis in Wireless and Wireline Systems

    First, a frequency synthesizer for IEEE 802.15.4 / ZigBee transceiver applications that employs dynamic True Single Phase Clocking (TSPC) circuits in its frequency dividers is presented and through the analysis and measurement results of this synthesizer, the need for low power circuit techniques in frequency dividers is discussed. Next, Differential Cascode Voltage-Switch-Logic (DCVSL) based delay cells are explored for implementing radio-frequency (RF) frequency dividers of low power frequency synthesizers. DCVSL ip- ops offer small input and clock capacitance which makes the power consumption of these circuits and their driving stages, very low. We perform a delay analysis of DCVSL circuits and propose a closed-form delay model that predicts the speed of DCVSL circuits with 8 percent worst case accuracy. The proposed delay model also demonstrates that DCVSL circuits suffer from a large low-to-high propagation delay ( PLH) which limits their speed and results in asymmetrical output waveforms. Our proposed enhanced DCVSL, which we call DCVSL-R, solves this delay bottleneck, reducing PLH and achieving faster operation. We implement two ring-oscillator-based voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) in 0.13 mu m technology with DCVSL and DCVSL-R delay cells. In measurements, for the same oscillation frequency (2.4GHz) and same phase noise (-113dBc/Hz at 10MHz), DCVSL-R VCO consumes 30 percent less power than the DCVSL VCO. We also use the proposed DCVSL-R circuit to implement the 2.4GHz dual-modulus prescaler of a low power frequency synthesizer in 0.18 mu m technology. In measurements, the synthesizer exhibits -135dBc/Hz phase noise at 10MHz offset and 58 mu m settling time with 8.3mW power consumption, only 1.07mWof which is consumed by the dual modulus prescaler and the buffer that drives it. When compared to other dual modulus prescalers with similar division ratios and operating frequencies in literature, DCVSL-R dual modulus prescaler demonstrates the lowest power consumption. An all digital phase locked loop (ADPLL) that operates for a wide range of frequencies to serve as a multi-protocol compatible PLL for microprocessor and serial link applications, is presented. The proposed ADPLL is truly digital and is implemented in a standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology without any analog/RF or non-scalable components. It addresses the challenges that come along with continuous wide range of operation such as stability and phase frequency detection for a large frequency error range. A proposed multi-bit bidirectional smart shifter serves as the digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) control and tunes the DCO frequency by turning on/off inverter units in a large row/column matrix that constitute the ring oscillator. The smart shifter block is completely digital, consisting of standard cell logic gates, and is capable of tracking the row/column unit availability of the DCO and shifting multiple bits per single update cycle. This enables fast frequency acquisition times without necessitating dual loop fi lter or gear shifting mechanisms. The proposed ADPLL loop architecture does not employ costly, cumbersome DACs or binary to thermometer converters and minimizes loop filter and DCO control complexity. The wide range ADPLL is implemented in 90nm digital CMOS technology and has a 9-bit TDC, the output of which is processed by a 10-bit digital loop filter and a 5-bit smart shifter. In measurements, the synthesizer achieves 2.5GHz-7.3GHz operation while consuming 10mW/GHz power, with an active area of 0.23 mm2

    Integrated radio frequency synthetizers for wireless applications

    This thesis consists of six publications and an overview of the research topic, which is also a summary of the work. The research described in this thesis concentrates on the design of phase-locked loop radio frequency synthesizers for wireless applications. In particular, the focus is on the implementation of the prescaler, the phase detector, and the chargepump. This work reviews the requirements set for the frequency synthesizer by the wireless standards, and how these requirements are derived from the system specifications. These requirements apply to both integer-N and fractional-N synthesizers. The work also introduces the special considerations related to the design of fractional-N phase-locked loops. Finally, implementation alternatives for the different building blocks of the synthesizer are reviewed. The presented work introduces new topologies for the phase detector and the chargepump, and improved topologies for high speed CMOS prescalers. The experimental results show that the presented topologies can be successfully used in both integer-N and fractional-N synthesizers with state-of-the-art performance. The last part of this work discusses the additional considerations that surface when the synthesizer is integrated into a larger system chip. It is shown experimentally that the synthesizer can be successfully integrated into a complex transceiver IC without sacrificing the performance of the synthesizer or the transceiver.reviewe

    Techniques for low jitter clock multiplication

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 115-121).Phase realigning clock multipliers, such as Multiplying Delay-Locked Loops (MDLL), offer significantly reduced random jitter compared to typical Phase-Locked Loops (PLL). This is achieved by introducing the reference signal directly into their voltage controlled oscillators (VCO) to realign the phase to the clean reference. However, the typical cost of this benefit is a significant increase in deterministic jitter due to path mismatch in the detector as well as analog nonidealities in the tuning circuits. This thesis proposes a mostly-digital tuning technique that drastically reduces deterministic jitter in phase realigning clock multipliers. The proposed technique eliminates path mismatch by using a single-path digital detection method that leverages a scrambling time-to-digital converter (TDC) and correlated double sampling to infer the tuning error from the difference in cycle periods of the output. By using a digital loop filter that consists of a digital accumulator, the tuning technique avoids the analog nonidealities of typical tuning paths. The scrambling TDC is not a contribution of this thesis. A highly-digital MDLL prototype that uses the proposed tuning technique consists of two custom 0.13 [mu]m ICs, an FPGA board, a discrete digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with effective 8 bits, and a simple RC filter. The measured performance (for a 1.6 GHz output and 50 MHz reference) demonstrated an overall jitter of 0.93 ps rms, and estimated random and deterministic jitter of 0.68 ps rms and 0.76 ps peak-to-peak, respectively. The proposed MDLL architecture is especially suitable for digital ICs, since its highly-digital architecture is mostly compatible with digital design flows, which eases its porting between technologies.by Belal Moheedin Helal.Ph.D

    Delay Flip-Flop (DFF) Metastability Impact on Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) and Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) Circuits

    Modeling delay flip-flops for binary (e.g., Alexander) phase detectors requires paying close attention to three important timing parameters: setup time, hold time, and clock edge-to-output (or briefly C2Q time). These parameters have a critical role in determining the status of the system on the circuit level. This study provided a guideline for designing an optimum DFF for an Alexander phase detector in a clock and data recovery circuit. Furthermore, it indicated DFF timing requirements for a high-speed phase detector in a clock and data recovery circuit. The CDR was also modeled by Verilog-A, and the results were compared with Simulink model achievements. Eventually designed in 45 nm CMOS technology, for 10 Gbps random sequence, the recovered clock contained 0.136 UI and 0.15 UI peak-to-peak jitter on the falling and rising edges respectively, and the lock time was 125 ns. The overall power dissipation was 21 mW from a 1 V supply voltage. Future work includes layout design and manufacturing of the proposed design

    Time-based circuits for communication systems in advanced CMOS technology

Although ever-decreasing device channel length in CMOS technology has mainly negative effects on analog circuits, it increases device speed and reduces the power consumption of digital circuits. As a result, time-based signal processing has been attracting attention because time-based circuits take advantage of high speed and low power devices to deal with analog information in the time domain. In this thesis, we focus on a ring oscillator as a core time-based circuit for communication systems. Ring oscillators are employed in analog-to-time conversion or time-to-digital conversion. In this work, we present A/D converters and an RF modulator based on ring oscillators in deep sub-micron CMOS processes. We introduce a VCO-based [sigma][delta] A/D converter utilizing a voltage-controlled ring oscillator (ring VCO) as a continuous-time integrator. We propose to replace conventional integrators designed with analog circuits in a [sigma][delta] modulator with a ring VCO and a phase detector, thereby implementing an A/D converter without traditional analog circuits. We also propose a single-slope A/D converter using time-to-digital conversion. By combining a few analog circuits and a ring oscillator based Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC), we achieve highly digital A/D conversion. Finally, we demonstrate a VCO-based RF modulator. The proposed RF modulator generates an RF signal by simply switching transistors. As opposed to an RFDAC approach, the proposed RF modulator is not limited by quantization noise because it employs multiphase PWM signals. A VCO-based OP amp is also introduced as an alternative method of designing an OP amp in deep sub-micron CMOS. The proposed VCO-based OP amp is utilized to generate the multiphase PWM signals in the RF modulator. This thesis also presents the fundamental limitations of a ring oscillator as a timebased circuit. Although the idea of time-based signal processing employing a ring oscillator has its own limitations such as non-linear tuning characteristics and phase noise, the basic idea is worth investigating to solve the serious problems of analog circuits for future CMOS technology.by Min Park.Ph.D

    Design of high performance frequency synthesizers in communication systems

    Frequency synthesizer is a key building block of fully-integrated wireless communication systems. Design of a frequency synthesizer requires the understanding of not only the circuit-level but also of the transceiver system-level considerations. This dissertation presents a full cycle of the synthesizer design procedure starting from the interpretation of standards to the testing and measurement results. A new methodology of interpreting communication standards into low level circuit specifications is developed to clarify how the requirements are calculated. A detailed procedure to determine important design variables is presented incorporating the fundamental theory and non-ideal effects such as phase noise and reference spurs. The design procedure can be easily adopted for different applications. A BiCMOS frequency synthesizer compliant for both wireless local area network (WLAN) 802.11a and 802.11b standards is presented as a design example. The two standards are carefully studied according to the proposed standard interpretation method. In order to satisfy stringent requirements due to the multi-standard architecture, an improved adaptive dual-loop phase-locked loop (PLL) architecture is proposed. The proposed improvements include a new loop filter topology with an active capacitance multiplier and a tunable dead zone circuit. These improvements are crucial for monolithic integration of the synthesizer with no off-chip components. The proposed architecture extends the operation limit of conventional integerN type synthesizers by providing better reference spur rejection and settling time performance while making it more suitable for monolithic integration. It opens a new possibility of using an integer-N architecture for various other communication standards, while maintaining the benefit of the integer-N architecture; an optimal performance in area and power consumption
