    An Effective Ultrasound Video Communication System Using Despeckle Filtering and HEVC

    The recent emergence of the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard promises to deliver significant bitrate savings over current and prior video compression standards, while also supporting higher resolutions that can meet the clinical acquisition spatiotemporal settings. The effective application of HEVC to medical ultrasound necessitates a careful evaluation of strict clinical criteria that guarantee that clinical quality will not be sacrificed in the compression process. Furthermore, the potential use of despeckle filtering prior to compression provides for the possibility of significant additional bitrate savings that have not been previously considered. This paper provides a thorough comparison of the use of MPEG-2, H.263, MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, and HEVC for compressing atherosclerotic plaque ultrasound videos. For the comparisons, we use both subjective and objective criteria based on plaque structure and motion. For comparable clinical video quality, experimental evaluation on ten videos demonstrates that HEVC reduces bitrate requirements by as much as 33.2% compared to H.264/AVC and up to 71% compared to MPEG-2. The use of despeckle filtering prior to compression is also investigated as a method that can reduce bitrate requirements through the removal of higher frequency components without sacrificing clinical quality. Based on the use of three despeckle filtering methods with both H.264/AVC and HEVC, we find that prior filtering can yield additional significant bitrate savings. The best performing despeckle filter (DsFlsmv) achieves bitrate savings of 43.6% and 39.2% compared to standard nonfiltered HEVC and H.264/AVC encoding, respectively

    abstract: Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in recent years with the development of the highly efficient and flexible H.264/AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension. The emerging H.265/HEVC video coding standard as well as 3D video coding further advance video coding for multimedia communications. This paper first gives an overview of these new video coding standards and then examines their implications for multimedia communications by studying the traffic characteristics of long videos encoded with the new coding standards. We review video coding advances from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2 to H.264/AVC and its SVC and MVC extensions as well as H.265/HEVC. For single-layer (nonscalable) video, we compare H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC in terms of video traffic and statistical multiplexing characteristics. Our study is the first to examine the H.265/HEVC traffic variability for long videos.     Packet loss visibility across SD, HD, 3D, and UHD video streams

    The trend towards video streaming with increased spatial resolutions and dimensions, SD, HD, 3D, and 4kUHD, even for portable devices has important implications for displayed video quality. There is an interplay between packetization, packet loss visibility, choice of codec, and viewing conditions, which implies that prior studies at lower resolutions may not be as relevant. This paper presents two sets of experiments, the one at a Variable BitRate (VBR) and the other at a Constant BitRate (CBR), which highlight different aspects of the interpretation. The latter experiments also compare and contrast encoding with either an H.264 or an High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) codec, with all results recorded as objective Mean Opinion Score (MOS). The video quality assessments will be of interest to those considering: the bitrates and expected quality in error-prone environments; or, in fact, whether to use a reliable transport protocol to prevent all errors, at a cost in jitter and latency, rather than tolerate low levels of packet errors

    SLEPX: An Efficient Lightweight Cipher for Visual Protection of Scalable HEVC Extension

    This paper proposes a lightweight cipher scheme aimed at the scalable extension of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) codec, referred to as the Scalable HEVC (SHVC) standard. This stream cipher, Symmetric Cipher for Lightweight Encryption based on Permutation and EXlusive OR (SLEPX), applies Selective Encryption (SE) over suitable coding syntax elements in the SHVC layers. This is achieved minimal computational complexity and delay. The algorithm also conserves most SHVC functionalities, i.e. preservation of bit-length, decoder format-compliance, and error resilience. For comparative analysis, results were taken and compared with other state-of-art ciphers i.e. Exclusive-OR (XOR) and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The performance of SLEPX is also compared with existing video SE solutions to confirm the efficiency of the adopted scheme. The experimental results demonstrate that SLEPX is as secure as AES in terms of visual protection, while computationally efficient comparable with a basic XOR cipher. Visual quality assessment, security analysis and extensive cryptanalysis (based on numerical values of selected binstrings) also showed the effectiveness of SLEPX’s visual protection scheme for SHVC compared to previously-employed cryptographic technique

    Visual quality assessment of H.264/AVC compressed laparoscopic video

    The digital revolution has reached hospital operating rooms, giving rise to new opportunities such as tele-surgery and tele-collaboration. Applications such as minimally invasive and robotic surgery generate large video streams that demand gigabytes of storage and transmission capacity. While lossy data compression can offer large size reduction, high compression levels may significantly reduce image quality. In this study we assess the quality of compressed laparoscopic video using a subjective evaluation study and three objective measures. Test sequences were full High-Definition videos captures of four laparoscopic surgery procedures acquired on two camera types. Raw sequences were processed with H.264/AVC IPPP-CBR at four compression levels (19.5, 5.5, 2.8, and 1.8 Mbps). 16 non-experts and 9 laparoscopic surgeons evaluated the subjective quality and suitability for surgery (surgeons only) using Single Stimulus Continuous Quality Evaluation methodology. VQM, HDR-VDP-2, and PSNR objective measures were evaluated. The results suggest that laparoscopic video may be lossy compressed approximately 30 to 100 times (19.5 to 5.5 Mbps) without sacrificing perceived image quality, potentially enabling real-time streaming of surgical procedures even over wireless networks. Surgeons were sensitive to content but had large variances in quality scores, whereas non-experts judged all scenes similarly and over-estimated the quality of some sequences. There was high correlation between surgeons’ scores for quality and “suitability for surgery”. The objective measures had moderate to high correlation with subjective scores, especially when analyzed separately by camera type. Future studies should evaluate surgeons’ task performance to determine the clinical implications of conducting surgery with lossy compressed video

    An objective and subjective quality assessment for passive gaming video streaming

    Gaming video streaming has become increasingly popular in recent times. Along with the rise and popularity of cloud gaming services and e-sports, passive gaming video streaming services such as Twitch.tv, YouTubeGaming, etc. where viewers watch the gameplay of other gamers, have seen increasing acceptance. Twitch.tv alone has over 2.2 million monthly streamers and 15 million daily active users with almost a million average concurrent users, making Twitch.tv the 4th biggest internet traffic generator, just after Netflix, YouTube and Apple. Despite the increasing importance and popularity of such live gaming video streaming services, they have until recently not caught the attention of the quality assessment research community. For the continued success of such services, it is imperative to maintain and satisfy the end user Quality of Experience (QoE), which can be measured using various Video Quality Assessment (VQA) methods. Gaming videos are synthetic and artificial in nature and have different streaming requirements as compared to traditional non-gaming content. While there exist a lot of subjective and objective studies in the field of quality assessment of Video-on-demand (VOD) streaming services, such as Netflix and YouTube, along with the design of many VQA metrics, no work has been done previously towards quality assessment of live passive gaming video streaming applications. The research work in this thesis tries to address this gap by using various subjective and objective quality assessment studies. A codec comparison using the three most popular and widely used compression standards is performed to determine their compression efficiency. Furthermore, a subjective and objective comparative study is carried out to find out the difference between gaming and non-gaming videos in terms of the trade-off between quality and data-rate after compression. This is followed by the creation of an open source gaming video dataset, which is then used for a performance evaluation study of the eight most popular VQA metrics. Different temporal pooling strategies and content based classification approaches are evaluated to assess their effect on the VQA metrics. Finally, due to the low performance of existing No-Reference (NR) VQA metrics on gaming video content, two machine learning based NR models are designed using NR features and existing NR metrics, which are shown to outperform existing NR metrics while performing on par with state-of-the-art Full-Reference (FR) VQA metrics
