    Performance Study of Round Robin and Proportional Fair Scheduling Algorithms by Emulation for Video Traffic in LTE Networks

    Video communication over mobile broadband is gaining popularity due to the increased demand for applications such as Video on Demand (VoD), IPTV, video conferencing etc. In order to support these video applications over mobile broadband, efficient video streaming within the limited bandwidth environment is essential. Further, Long Term Evolution (LTE) network incorporates advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) mechanism such as scheduling to realize efficient video streaming over limited bandwidth arena. Scheduling does the task of dividing and allocating radio resources in order to maximize system throughput and enhance Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end user. Hence, in this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the performance of Round Robin (RR) and Proportional Fair (PF) scheduling algorithms using EXata network emulator for real video traffic generated by Video LAN (VLC) media player. Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and throughput are considered as performance metrics for the emulation studies

    Architecture and Protocol to Optimize Videoconference in Wireless Networks

    [EN] In the past years, videoconferencing (VC) has become an essential means of communications. VC allows people to communicate face to face regardless of their location, and it can be used for different purposes such as business meetings, medical assistance, commercial meetings, and military operations. There are a lot of factors in real-time video transmission that can affect to the quality of service (QoS) and the quality of experience (QoE). The application that is used (Adobe Connect, Cisco Webex, and Skype), the internet connection, or the network used for the communication can affect to the QoE. Users want communication to be as good as possible in terms of QoE. In this paper, we propose an architecture for videoconferencing that provides better quality of experience than other existing applications such as Adobe Connect, Cisco Webex, and Skype. We will test how these three applications work in terms of bandwidth, packets per second, and delay using WiFi and 3G/4G connections.     Mitigating the impact of packet reordering to maximize performance of multimedia applications

    We propose a solution to mitigate the performance degradation and corresponding Quality of Experience (QoE) reduction caused by packet reordering for multimedia applications which utilise unreliable transport protocols like the Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP). We analytically derive the optimum buffer size based on the applications data rate and the maximum delay tolerated by the multimedia application. We propose a dynamically adjustable buffer in the transport protocol receiver which uses this optimum buffer size. We demonstrate, via simulation results, that our solution reduces the packet loss rate, increases the perceived bandwidth and does not increase jitter in the received applications packets while still being within the application's delay limits, therefore resulting in an increased QoE of multimedia applications

    Video Conference as a tool for Higher Education

    The book describes the activities of the consortium member institutions in the framework of the TEMPUS IV Joint Project ViCES - Video Conferencing Educational Services (144650-TEMPUS-2008-IT-JPGR). In order to provide the basis for the development of a distance learning environment based on video conferencing systems and develop a blended learning courses methodology, the TEMPUS Project VICES (2009-2012) was launched in 2009. This publication collects the conclusion of the project and it reports the main outcomes together with the approach followed by the different partners towards the achievement of the project's goal. The book includes several contributions focussed on specific topics related to videoconferencing services, namely how to enable such services in educational contexts so that, the installation and deployment of videoconferencing systems could be conceived an integral part of virtual open campuses
