    QoS Provisioning for Multi-Class Traffic in Wireless Networks

    Physical constraints, bandwidth constraints and host mobility all contribute to the difficulty of providing Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in wireless networks. There is a growing demand for wireless networks to support all the services that are available on wired networks. These diverse services, such as email, instant messaging, web browsing, video conferencing, telephony and paging all place different demands on the network, making QoS provisioning for wireless networks that carry multiple classes of traffic a complex problem. We have developed a set of admission control and resource reservation schemes for QoS provisioning in multi-class wireless networks. We present three variations of a novel resource borrowing scheme for cellular networks that exploits the ability of some multimedia applications to adapt to transient fluctuations in the supplied resources. The first of the schemes is shown to be proportionally fair: the second scheme is max-min fair. The third scheme for cellular networks uses knowledge about the relationship between streams that together comprise a multimedia session in order to further improve performance. We also present a predictive resource reservation scheme for LEO satellite networks that exploits the regularity of the movement patterns of mobile hosts in LEO satellite networks. We have developed the cellular network simulator (CNS) for evaluating call-level QoS provisioning schemes. QoS at the call-level is concerned with call blocking probability (CBP), call dropping probability (CDP), and supplied bandwidth. We introduce two novel QoS parameters that relate to supplied bandwidth—the average percent of desired bandwidth supplied (DBS), and the percent of time spent operating at the desired bandwidth level (DBT)

    Mobile and Wireless Communications have been one of the major revolutions of the late twentieth century. We are witnessing a very fast growth in these technologies where mobile and wireless communications have become so ubiquitous in our society and indispensable for our daily lives. The relentless demand for higher data rates with better quality of services to comply with state-of-the art applications has revolutionized the wireless communication field and led to the emergence of new technologies such as Bluetooth, WiFi, Wimax, Ultra wideband, OFDMA. Wireless communication network is a multidisciplinary field addressing different aspects raging from theoretical analysis, system architecture design, and hardware and software implementations. While different new applications are requiring higher data rates and better quality of service and prolonging the mobile battery life, new development and advanced research studies and systems and circuits designs are necessary to keep pace with the market requirements. This book covers the most advanced research and development topics in mobile and wireless communication networks. It is divided into two parts with a total of thirty-four stand-alone chapters covering various areas of wireless communications of special topics including: physical layer and network layer, access methods and scheduling, techniques and technologies, antenna and amplifier design, integrated circuit design, applications and systems.     Content Caching and Delivery in Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), which enable information exchange and content delivery in real time, are expected to revolutionize current transportation systems for better driving safety, traffic efficiency, and environmental sustainability. However, the emerging CAV applications such as content delivery pose stringent requirements on latency, throughput, reliability, and global connectivity. The current wireless networks face significant challenges to satisfy the requirements due to scarce radio spectrum resources, inflexibility to dynamic traffic demands, and geographic-constrained fixed infrastructure deployment. To empower multifarious CAV content delivery, heterogeneous vehicular networks (HetVNets), which integrate the terrestrial networks with aerial networks formed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and space networks constituting of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, can guarantee reliable, flexible, cost-effective, and globally seamless service provisioning. In addition, edge caching is a promising solution to facilitate content delivery by caching popular files in the HetVNet access points (APs) to relieve the backhaul traffic with a lower delivery delay. The main technical issues are: 1) to fully reveal the potential of HetVNets for content delivery performance enhancement, content caching scheme design in HetVNets should jointly consider network characteristics, vehicle mobility patterns, content popularity, and APs’ caching capacities; 2) to fully exploit the controllable mobility and agility of UAVs to support dynamic vehicular content demands, the caching scheme and trajectory design for UAVs should be jointly optimized, which has not been well addressed due to their intricate inter-coupling relationships; and 3) for caching-based content delivery in HetVNets, a cooperative content delivery scheme should be designed to enable the cooperation among different network segments with ingenious utilization of heterogeneous network resources. In this thesis, we design the content caching and delivery schemes in the caching-enabled HetVNet to address the three technical issues. First, we study the content caching in HetVNets with fixed terrestrial APs including cellular base stations (CBSs), Wi-Fi roadside units (RSUs), and TV white space (TVWS) stations. To characterize the intermittent network connection caused by limited network coverage and high vehicle mobility, we establish an on-off model with service interruptions to describe the vehicular content delivery process. Content coding then is leveraged to resist the impact of unstable network connections and enhance caching efficiency. By jointly considering file characteristics and network conditions, the content placement is formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. Adopting the idea of the student admission model, the ILP problem is then transformed into a many-to-one matching problem between content files and HetVNet APs and solved by our proposed stable-matching-based caching scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performances in terms of delivery delay and offloading ratio with a low complexity. Second, UAV-aided caching is considered to assist vehicular content delivery in aerial-ground vehicular networks (AGVN) and a joint caching and trajectory optimization (JCTO) problem is investigated to jointly optimize content caching, content delivery, and UAV trajectory. To enable real-time decision-making in highly dynamic vehicular networks, we propose a deep supervised learning scheme to solve the JCTO problem. Specifically, we first devise a clustering-based two-layered (CBTL) algorithm to solve the JCTO problem offline. With a given content caching policy, we design a time-based graph decomposition method to jointly optimize content delivery and UAV trajectory, with which we then leverage the particle swarm optimization algorithm to optimize the content caching. We then design a deep supervised learning architecture of the convolutional neural network (CNN) to make online decisions. With the CNN-based model, a function mapping the input network information to output decisions can be intelligently learnt to make timely inferences. Extensive trace-driven experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of CBTL in solving the JCTO problem and the superior learning performance with the CNN-based model. Third, we investigate caching-assisted cooperative content delivery in space-air-ground integrated vehicular networks (SAGVNs), where vehicular content requests can be cooperatively served by multiple APs in space, aerial, and terrestrial networks. In specific, a joint optimization problem of vehicle-to-AP association, bandwidth allocation, and content delivery ratio, referred to as the ABC problem, is formulated to minimize the overall content delivery delay while satisfying vehicular quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. To address the tightly-coupled optimization variables, we propose a load- and mobility-aware ABC (LMA-ABC) scheme to solve the joint optimization problem as follows. We first decompose the ABC problem to optimize the content delivery ratio. Then the impact of bandwidth allocation on the achievable delay performance is analyzed, and an effect of diminishing delay performance gain is revealed. Based on the analysis results, the LMA-ABC scheme is designed with the consideration of user fairness, load balancing, and vehicle mobility. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LMA-ABC scheme can significantly reduce the cooperative content delivery delay compared to the benchmark schemes. In summary, we have investigated the content caching in terrestrial networks with fixed APs, joint caching and trajectory optimization in the AGVN, and caching-assisted cooperative content delivery in the SAGVN. The proposed schemes and theoretical results should provide useful guidelines for future research in the caching scheme design and efficient utilization of network resources in caching-enabled heterogeneous wireless networks

    A Secure and Efficient Communications Architecture for Global Information Grid Users via Cooperating Space Assets

    With the Information Age in full and rapid development, users expect to have global, seamless, ubiquitous, secure, and efficient communications capable of providing access to real-time applications and collaboration. The United States Department of Defense’s (DoD) Network-Centric Enterprise Services initiative, along with the notion of pushing the “power to the edge,” aims to provide end-users with maximum situational awareness, a comprehensive view of the battlespace, all within a secure networking environment. Building from previous AFIT research efforts, this research developed a novel security framework architecture to address the lack of efficient and scalable secure multicasting in the low earth orbit satellite network environment. This security framework architecture combines several key aspects of different secure group communications architectures in a new way that increases efficiency and scalability, while maintaining the overall system security level. By implementing this security architecture in a deployed environment with heterogeneous communications users, reduced re-keying frequency will result. Less frequent re-keying means more resources are available for throughput as compared to security overhead. This translates to more transparency to the end user; it will seem as if they have a “larger pipe” for their network links. As a proof of concept, this research developed and analyzed multiple mobile communication environment scenarios to demonstrate the superior re-keying advantage offered by the novel “Hubenko Security Framework Architecture” over traditional and clustered multicast security architectures. For example, in the scenario containing a heterogeneous mix of user types (Stationary, Ground, Sea, and Air), the Hubenko Architecture achieved a minimum ten-fold reduction in total keys distributed as compared to other known architectures. Another experiment demonstrated the Hubenko Architecture operated at 6% capacity while the other architectures operated at 98% capacity. In the 80% overall mobility experiment with 40% Air users, the other architectures re-keying increased 900% over the Stationary case, whereas the Hubenko Architecture only increased 65%. This new architecture is extensible to numerous secure group communications environments beyond the low earth orbit satellite network environment, including unmanned aerial vehicle swarms, wireless sensor networks, and mobile ad hoc networks

    Interference analysis of broadband space and terrestrial fixed radio communications systems in the frequency range 12 to 30 GHz

    This thesis presents research into the principles of spectrum sharing analysis methods developed for investigating implications of interference from Nongeostationary Fixed Satellite Service (NGSO FSS) systems into Geostationary Fixed Satellite Service (GSO FSS) systems and Fixed Service (FS) terrestrial radio systems operating or planned for operation in the 12 to 30 GHz frequency range. Spectrum sharing is an effective way of allowing new services to operate without cancelling the existing allocations in the same part of the spectrum. The use of spectrum sharing results in re-use of the available spectrum among different services and, therefore, increases the efficient use of the radio frequencies. However, it is necessary to carry out extensive feasibility studies into technical or operational compatibility between the services involved. Often, sharing constraints are placed on systems, such as the power of emissions and the transmitter and receiver antenna pointings to reduce the interference into negligible levels. Traditionally, radio spectrum allocated to GSO FSS has been shared with FS. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of low Earth orbits and a number of NGSO FSS constellations has been designed to provide broadband data services. This has led to the allocation of certain bands used by the FS and GSO FSS systems to NGSO FSS. In line with the new allocations, NGSO FSS, GSO FSS and FS systems are required to co-exist in parts of the 12 to 30 GHz frequency range. The primary objectives of this research were to identify principal factors affecting the feasibility of spectrum sharing and to develop spectrum sharing analysis methodologies to examine the implications of these factors with a view to identifying sharing constraints that would give rise to an acceptable sharing environment

    5G network slicing for rural connectivity: multi-tenancy in wireless networks

    As the need for wireless broadband continues to grow around the world, there is an increasing focus to minimise the existing digital divide and ensuring that everyone receives high-quality internet services, especially the inhabitants of rural areas. As a result, different technological solutions are being studied and trialled for improving rural connectivity, such as 5G with dynamic spectrum access. One of the architectures of 5G is network slicing, which supports network virtualisation and consists of independent logical networks, called slices, on the 5G network. Network slicing supports the multi-tenancy of different operators on the same physical network, and this feature is known as neutral host networks (NHN). It allows multiple operators to co-exist on the same physical network but on different virtual networks to serve end users. Generally, the 5G NHN deployment is handled by an infrastructure provider (InP), who could be a mobile network operator (MNO), an Internet service provider, a third-party operator, etc. At the same time, potential tenants would lease slices from the InP. The NHN strategy would help reduce resource duplication and increase the utilisation of existing resources. The existing research into NHN for small cells, in-building connectivity solutions, and other deployment scenarios help to understand the technological and business requirements. End-to-end sharing across operators to provide services to their end users is another innovative application of 5G NHN that has been tested for dense areas. Meanwhile, the feasibility and policy impact of NHN is not studied extensively for the rural scenario. The research in this thesis examines the use of NHN in macro- and small-cell networks for 5G communication systems to minimise the digital divide, with a special focus on rural areas. The study also presents and analyses the 5G multi-tenancy system design for the rural wireless scenario, focusing mainly on exploring suitable business cases through network economics, techno-economic study, and game theory analysis. The results obtained from the study, such as cost analysis, business models, sensitivity analysis, and pricing strategies, help in formulating the policy on infrastructure sharing to improve rural connectivity. The contributions of the thesis are useful for stakeholders and policymakers to assess the suitability of the rural 5G NHN by exploring state-of-the-art technologies, techno-economic analysis, sensitivity analysis, newer business models, investment assessment, cost allocation, and risk sharing. Initially, the research gap is highlighted through the extensive literature review and stakeholders’ views on rural connectivity collected from discussions with them. First, the in-depth discussion on the network economics of the rural 5G NHN includes the study of potential future scenarios, value network configurations, spectrum access strategy models, and business models. Secondly, the techno-economic analysis studies the key performance indicators (KPI), cost analysis, return on investment, net present value, and sensitivity analysis, with the application for the rural parts of the UK and India. Finally, the game theory framework includes the study of strategic interaction among the two key stakeholders, InP and the MNO, using models such as investment games and pricing strategies during multi-tenancy.
