The Affordability Index: A New Tool for Measuring the True Affordability of a Housing Choice
This brief describes a new information tool developed by the Urban Markets Initiative to quantify, for the first time, the impact of transportation costs on the affordability of housing choices. This brief explains the background, creation, and purpose of this new tool. The first section provides a project overview and a short summary of the method used to create the Affordability Index. The next section highlights the results from testing the index in a seven-county area in and around Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN. To demonstrate the usefulness of this tool at a neighborhood level, the third section projects the effect of transportation and housing choices on three hypothetical low- and moderate-income families in each of four different neighborhoods in the Twin Cities. The brief concludes with suggested policy recommendations and applications of the new tool for various actors in the housing market, and for regulators, planners, and funders in the transportation and land use arenas at all levels of government. The Housing and Transportation Affordability Index is a groundbreaking innovation because it prices the trade-offs that households make between housing and transportation costs and the savings that derive from living in communities that are near shopping, schools, and work, and that boast a transit-rich environment. Built using data sets that are available for every transit-served community in the nation, the tool can be applied in neighborhoods in more than 42 cities in the United States. It provides consumers, policymakers, lenders, and investors with the information needed to make better decisions about which neighborhoods are truly affordable, and illuminate the implications of their policy and investment choices
"Whose data is it anyway?" The implications of putting small area-level health and social data online
International audienceThe planetary exospheres are poorly known in their outer parts, since the neutral densities are low compared with the instruments detection capabilities. The exospheric models are thus often the main source of information at such high altitudes. We present a new way to take into account analytically the additional effect of the radiation pressure on planetary exospheres. In a series of papers, we present with an Hamiltonian approach the effect of the radiation pressure on dynamical trajectories, density profiles and escaping thermal flux. Our work is a generalization of the study by Bishop and Chamberlain (1989). In this second part of our work, we present here the density profiles of atomic Hydrogen in planetary exospheres subject to the radiation pressure. We first provide the altitude profiles of ballistic particles (the dominant exospheric population in most cases), which exhibit strong asymmetries that explain the known geotail phenomenon at Earth. The radiation pressure strongly enhances the densities compared with the pure gravity case (i.e. the Chamberlain profiles), in particular at noon and midnight. We finally show the existence of an exopause that appears naturally as the external limit for bounded particles, above which all particles are escaping
Navigating MazeMap: indoor human mobility, spatio-logical ties and future potential
Global navigation systems and location-based services have found their way
into our daily lives. Recently, indoor positioning techniques have also been
proposed, and there are several live or trial systems already operating. In
this paper, we present insights from MazeMap, the first live indoor/outdoor
positioning and navigation system deployed at a large university campus in
Norway. Our main contribution is a measurement case study; we show the spatial
and temporal distribution of MazeMap geo-location and wayfinding requests,
construct the aggregated human mobility map of the campus and find strong
logical ties between different locations. On one hand, our findings are
specific to the venue; on the other hand, the nature of available data and
insights coupled with our discussion on potential usage scenarios for indoor
positioning and location-based services predict a successful future for these

The rise of the millennial cohort : a case study of the effects on San Franciscoâs rental housing market
This report studies the rise of the millennial cohort and the effects an influx of young people may be having on San Franciscoâs rental housing stock. This cohort is the largest since the Baby Boom generation. With delayed household formation in the wake of the economic recession, they are only now beginning to express their household preferences that have thus far proven to be unconventional compared to those of prior generations. Instead of buying homes in the suburbs, many are moving toward urban centers where they can live close to work and play. In the media, millennials have been stigmatized for causing gentrification as they move into once affordable working class neighborhoods. Many move to these neighborhoods for their cultural vibrancy but end up being blamed for displacing those who created it. San Francisco prior to the millennial trend had already had its own unique affordable housing challenges and has always been one of the most expensive cities in the country. However in recent years, housing costs have skyrocketed. There are many pieces to the puzzle but this report will research what possible pressures the millennial cohort may be having on San Franciscoâs most recent wave of gentrification. If the case is significant, it could provide insight in finding much needed solutions to San Franciscoâs affordable housing problem.Community and Regional Plannin

Defending against Sybil Devices in Crowdsourced Mapping Services
Real-time crowdsourced maps such as Waze provide timely updates on traffic,
congestion, accidents and points of interest. In this paper, we demonstrate how
lack of strong location authentication allows creation of software-based {\em
Sybil devices} that expose crowdsourced map systems to a variety of security
and privacy attacks. Our experiments show that a single Sybil device with
limited resources can cause havoc on Waze, reporting false congestion and
accidents and automatically rerouting user traffic. More importantly, we
describe techniques to generate Sybil devices at scale, creating armies of
virtual vehicles capable of remotely tracking precise movements for large user
populations while avoiding detection. We propose a new approach to defend
against Sybil devices based on {\em co-location edges}, authenticated records
that attest to the one-time physical co-location of a pair of devices. Over
time, co-location edges combine to form large {\em proximity graphs} that
attest to physical interactions between devices, allowing scalable detection of
virtual vehicles. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using
large-scale simulations, and discuss how they can be used to dramatically
reduce the impact of attacks against crowdsourced mapping services.Comment: Measure and integratio
Using XML and XSLT for flexible elicitation of mental-health risk knowledge
Current tools for assessing risks associated with mental-health problems require assessors to make high-level judgements based on clinical experience. This paper describes how new technologies can enhance qualitative research methods to identify lower-level cues underlying these judgements, which can be collected by people without a specialist mental-health background.
Methods and evolving results: Content analysis of interviews with 46 multidisciplinary mental-health experts exposed the cues and their interrelationships, which were represented by a mind map using software that stores maps as XML. All 46 mind maps were integrated into a single XML knowledge structure and analysed by a Lisp program to generate quantitative information about the numbers of experts associated with each part of it. The knowledge was refined by the experts, using software developed in Flash to record their collective views within the XML itself. These views specified how the XML should be transformed by XSLT, a technology for rendering XML, which resulted in a validated hierarchical knowledge structure associating patient cues with risks.
Conclusions: Changing knowledge elicitation requirements were accommodated by flexible transformations of XML data using XSLT, which also facilitated generation of multiple data-gathering tools suiting different assessment circumstances and levels of mental-health knowledge
