Fuzzy Dynamic Discrimination Algorithms for Distributed Knowledge Management Systems
A reduction of the algorithmic complexity of the fuzzy inference engine has the following property: the inputs (the fuzzy rules and the fuzzy facts) can be divided in two parts, one being relatively constant for a long a time (the fuzzy rule or the knowledge model) when it is compared to the second part (the fuzzy facts) for every inference cycle. The occurrence of certain transformations over the constant part makes sense, in order to decrease the solution procurement time, in the case that the second part varies, but it is known at certain moments in time. The transformations attained in advance are called pre-processing or knowledge compilation. The use of variables in a Business Rule Management System knowledge representation allows factorising knowledge, like in classical knowledge based systems. The language of the first-degree predicates facilitates the formulation of complex knowledge in a rigorous way, imposing appropriate reasoning techniques. It is, thus, necessary to define the description method of fuzzy knowledge, to justify the knowledge exploiting efficiency when the compiling technique is used, to present the inference engine and highlight the functional features of the pattern matching and the state space processes. This paper presents the main results of our project PR356 for designing a compiler for fuzzy knowledge, like Rete compiler, that comprises two main components: a static fuzzy discrimination structure (Fuzzy Unification Tree) and the Fuzzy Variables Linking Network. There are also presented the features of the elementary pattern matching process that is based on the compiled structure of fuzzy knowledge. Efficient Aggregated Deliveries with Strong Guarantees in an Event-based Distributed System
A popular approach to designing large scale distributed systems is to follow an event-based approach. In an event-based approach, a set of software components interact by producing and consuming events. The event-based model allows for the decoupling of software components, allowing distributed systems to scale to a large number of components. Event correlation allows for higher order reasoning of events by constructing complex events from single, consumable events. In many cases, event correlation applications rely on centralized setups or broker overlay networks. In the case of centralized setups, the guarantees for complex event delivery are stronger, however, centralized setups create performance bottlenecks and single points of failure. With broker overlays, the performance and fault tolerance are improved but at the cost of weaker guarantees

MediateSpace: applying contextual mediation to the tuple space paradigm
I designed, implemented and evaluated a decentralised context-aware content distribution middleware. It can support a variety of applications, with all network communication handled transparently behind a tuple space based interface. Content is inserted into the network with an associated condition stipulating the context that must be matched to receive it. Conditions can be expressed using conjunctions, disjunctions, a form of universal and existential quantification and nested block scopes. Conditions are mapped onto a set of spatial indexes to enable lookup; and these are inserted into a distributed multi-dimensional spatial data structure (e.g. an R-Tree). They are also translated into an OWL representation to enable evaluation.
Nodes bind to their most geographically proximate neighbours which allows distance-sensitive context sharing. The middleware is capability-aware, pushing computationally expensive tasks onto more capable nodes.
I evaluated my system through benchmarks and simulation, defining condition classes which collectively represent a large portion of the condition space. Random conditions were generated from these classes. Node mobility was
controlled through a number of probability distributions. Benchmark evaluation times were reasonable, evaluating 500 typical messages in 1.4 seconds each. When the number of stored contexts were reduced, this improved dramatically, evaluating 500 much more complicated conditions in one-tenth of a second each. The number and complexity of context parameters has a major impact on efficiency.
The number of spatial indexes generated was reasonable for most conditions, with a 95th percentile of 6. However, existential quantification was a challenge for both condition evaluation and index generation due to the
potentially large number of possible combinations of conditions.
As expected, simulations found that the distribution of workload was very uneven because nodes tend to cluster in large cities; meaning that most communication is localised within these areas. Also, node density had a dramatic impact on the number of received messages as nodes within sparse areas were unable to obtain context information which precluded condition evaluation.

Le secteur des télécommunications passe par une phase délicate en raison de profondes mutations technologiques, principalement motivées par le développement de l'Internet. Elles ont un impact majeur sur l'industrie des télécommunications dans son ensemble et, par conséquent, sur les futurs déploiements des nouveaux réseaux, plateformes et services. L'évolution de l'Internet a un impact particulièrement fort sur les opérateurs des télécommunications (Telcos). En fait, l'industrie des télécommunications est à la veille de changements majeurs en raison de nombreux facteurs, comme par exemple la banalisation progressive de la connectivité, la domination dans le domaine des services de sociétés du web (Webcos), l'importance croissante de solutions à base de logiciels et la flexibilité qu'elles introduisent (par rapport au système statique des opérateurs télécoms). Cette thèse élabore, propose et compare les scénarios possibles basés sur des solutions et des approches qui sont technologiquement viables. The evolution of the Internet has a particularly strong impact on telecommunications operators (Telcos). In fact, the telecommunications industry is on the verge of major changes due to many factors, such as the gradual commoditization of connectivity, the dominance of web services companies (Webcos), the growing importance of software based solutions that introduce flexibility (compared to static system of telecom operators).
