Instant messaging an effective way of communication in workplace

The modern workplace is inherently collaborative, and this collaboration relies on effective communication among coworkers. Instant messaging is the multitasking tools of choice most people chatting over IM do other things at the same time. The use of IM in workplace is less intrusive than the use of phone, more immediate than email and has added advantage due to the ability to detect presence. In order for institution to maximize increased business productivity using instant messaging its imperative that organizations define and publish ICT policies, guidelines and regulations.Overall IM boosts business performance by making operations faster, more agile, and more efficient with very little additional cost thus Organizations that deploy IM would reap significant Return on Investment.Institutions should adopt IM meetings which are be more efficient and less prone to straying off topic, because of the relative effort of typing versus talking.Comment: 8 page

HOW ESP PEDAGOGY IN INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL COLLABORATION CONTRIBUTES TO THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE LEARNING PROCESS: A CASE STUDY

    Get PDF
Given the rapid advances in information communication technology (ICT) and the ever-increasing likelihood that students will be collaborating on cross-cultural teams in their future careers, creating opportunities to engage in collaborative writing projects across borders and then observing the dynamics of international virtual online collaboration have high pedagogical value, though studies are scarce. This research examines the learning process that occurred when engineering and computer science students from France and Germany were connected with business and technical writing students from the US to work on co-authored documents. The researchers were specifically interested in how students addressed the situational constraints of the collaboration and how those constraints influenced students’ choices of communication and collaboration tools. Two separate projects were assigned and each employed reading, writing, “talking,” and critical thinking components. Analysis of post-project survey data and the correlation of students’ ICT choices revealed students had to continually renegotiate their communication and collaboration. Allowing students to make rhetorical choices resulted in cultural learning through hands-on experience with these constraint variables: English language proficiency, cultural differences, project complexity, time difference, and technology. The results from this study will be useful to ESP pedagogy in projecting how to prepare students for international virtual collaboration

Holistic analysis of the effectiveness of a software engineering teaching approach

To provide the best training in software engineering, several approaches and strategies are carried out. Some of them are more theoretical, learned through books and manuals, while others have a practical focus and often done in collaboration with companies. In this paper, we share an approach based on a balanced mix to foster the assimilation of knowledge, the approximation with what is done in software companies and student motivation. Two questionnaires were also carried out, one involving students, who had successfully completed the subject in past academic years (some had already graduated, and others are still students), and other questionnaire involving companies, in the field of software development, which employ students from our school. The analysis of the perspectives of the different stakeholders allows an overall and holistic) view, and a general understanding, of the effectiveness of the software engineering teaching approach. We analyse the results of the questionnaires and share some of the experiences and lessons learned.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Evolution of space programs governance

    Get PDF
This chapter discusses the evolution of space programs governance from the “Old Space” paradigm to the “New Space” one. For both paradigms, we discuss archetypical governance models, rationale, pros and cons. Ultimately, we explain the driving forces underpinning the evolution of program governance models. We show three governance archetypes. Traditionally program architectures and governance models were quite homogeneous and mostly government-led (archetype 1), while in the “New Space” paradigm, programs may also include partnerships with private actors (archetype 2) or being directly led and owned by private actors (archetype 3)

School teachers and principals’ experiences during COVID-19 in Pakistan

    Get PDF
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, educational activities were disrupted globally. In Pakistan, schools were also closed, and though some schools had started teaching online, the staff (including principals and teachers) and students\u27 readiness for education during the pandemic remained unexplored. An internet-based survey was conducted to explore the experiences of the teachers and principals during the lockdown. The survey included both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Responses were collected from respondents in different parts of Pakistan, with the majority coming from Sindh and coming from both the private and public sector. While the respondents from private schools reported that they could teach online, the respondents from government schools could not continue the teaching process during the lockdown phase. School principals focused on acquiring technology for online teaching and offering skills development sessions. They used a variety of methods to monitor teaching and learning. Teachers relied on a mix of synchronous and asynchronous teaching. Infrastructure issues posed numerous challenges. Findings highlight an urgent need for teacher education programmes to incorporate digital literacy development and enhance pedagogical understanding of engaging students in online teaching environments and exploring solutions such as blended learning. The findings also draw our attention to questions of equitable access to quality education for all in Pakistan

Technological Globalization and Academic Staff Development in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria

This study investigated Technological Globalization and Academic Staff Development in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. It was undertaken to determine the influence of technological globalization on academic staff development in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The correlational research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 145 out of the population of 1,454 academic staff from the four Rivers State owned tertiary institutions was randomly selected. The method of data collection was the questionnaire titled ‘Technological Globalization and Academic Staff Development Questionnaire’ (TGASDQ). The instrument was validated by experts and a reliability coefficient of 0.766 was obtained. The data were analyzed with both descriptive (Mean) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation co-efficient (r). The study found that there is a low, positive and significant correlation between technological globalization and academic staff development in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The study concluded that academic staff of the institutions need to evolve and align themselves with the benefits of technological globalization, and therefore recommended that educational managers and administrators should consciously, enhance their advancement centres and develop functional ICT centres for academic staff development. As researchers have previously said, due to rapid changing consumer needs, short product life cycle, longer concept-to-production and globalization, companies face intense competition, They always need to be at the peak of innovation, and keep introducing new products to maintain customer satisfaction and their market share. This work presents New Product Development from the point of view of knowledge process as well as Agility. It also, describes why firms need to implement Concurrent Engineering, how Concurrent Engineering can be achieved, what are the challenges. Also, as the organizations strive to achieve optimization, how the concept of Concurrent Engineering has been extended, and hence, not only different functional group, but also supplier’s integration, is necessary to bring the effectiveness in New Product Development process. It also defines how collaboration is achieved by organizations through physical or virtual team integration. Secondary research on how Product Development practices are carried out in Europe, China and UK
