Propagation effects for land mobile satellite systems: Overview of experimental and modeling results
Models developed and experiments performed to characterize the propagation environment associated with land mobile communication using satellites are discussed. Experiments were carried out with transmitters on stratospheric balloons, remotely piloted aircraft, helicopters, and geostationary satellites. This text is comprised of compiled experimental results for the expressed use of communications engineers, designers of planned Land Mobile Satellite Systems (LMSS), and modelers of propagation effects. The results presented here are mostly derived from systematic studies of propagation effects for LMSS geometries in the United States associated with rural and suburban regions. Where applicable, the authors also draw liberally from the results of other related investigations in Canada, Europe, and Australia. Frequencies near 1500 MHz are emphasized to coincide with frequency bands allocated for LMSS by the International Telecommunication Union, although earlier experimental work at 870 MHz is also included
Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
An Empirical Air-to-Ground Channel Model Based on Passive Measurements in LTE
In this paper, a recently conducted measurement campaign for
unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) channels is introduced. The downlink signals of
an in-service long-time-evolution (LTE) network which is deployed in a suburban
scenario were acquired. Five horizontal and five vertical flight routes were
considered. The channel impulse responses (CIRs) are extracted from the
received data by exploiting the cell specific signals (CRSs). Based on the
CIRs, the parameters of multipath components (MPCs) are estimated by using a
high-resolution algorithm derived according to the space-alternating
generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) principle. Based on the SAGE
results, channel characteristics including the path loss, shadow fading, fast
fading, delay spread and Doppler frequency spread are thoroughly investigated
for different heights and horizontal distances, which constitute a stochastic

Prediction of Satellite Shadowing in Smart Cities with Application to IoT
The combination of satellite direct reception and terrestrial 5G infrastructure is essential
to guarantee coverage in satellite based-Internet of Things, mainly in smart cities where buildings
can cause high power losses. In this paper, we propose an accurate and fast graphical method for
predicting the satellite coverage in urban areas and SatCom on-the-move scenarios. The aim is to
provide information that could be useful in the IoT network planning process, e.g., in the decision of
how many terrestrial repeaters are really needed and where they should be placed. Experiments show
that the shadowed areas predicted by the method correspond almost perfectly with experimental

Energy efficient hybrid satellite terrestrial 5G networks with software defined features
In order to improve the manageability and adaptability
of future 5G wireless networks, the software orchestration mechanism,
named software defined networking (SDN) with Control
and User plane (C/U-plane) decoupling, has become one of the
most promising key techniques. Based on these features, the hybrid
satellite terrestrial network is expected to support flexible
and customized resource scheduling for both massive machinetype-
communication (MTC) and high-quality multimedia requests
while achieving broader global coverage, larger capacity and lower
power consumption. In this paper, an end-to-end hybrid satellite
terrestrial network is proposed and the performance metrics,
e. g., coverage probability, spectral and energy efficiency (SE and
EE), are analysed in both sparse networks and ultra-dense networks.
The fundamental relationship between SE and EE is investigated,
considering the overhead costs, fronthaul of the gateway
(GW), density of small cells (SCs) and multiple quality-ofservice
(QoS) requirements. Numerical results show that compared
with current LTE networks, the hybrid system with C/U split
can achieve approximately 40% and 80% EE improvement in
sparse and ultra-dense networks respectively, and greatly enhance
the coverage. Various resource management schemes, bandwidth
allocation methods, and on-off approaches are compared, and the
applications of the satellite in future 5G networks with software
defined features are proposed
Safe navigation for vehicles
La navigation par satellite prend un virage très important ces dernières années, d'une part par l'arrivée imminente du système Européen GALILEO qui viendra compléter le GPS Américain, mais aussi et surtout par le succès grand public qu'il connaît aujourd'hui. Ce succès est dû en partie aux avancées technologiques au niveau récepteur, qui, tout en autorisant une miniaturisation de plus en plus avancée, en permettent une utilisation dans des environnements de plus en plus difficiles. L'objectif aujourd'hui est de préparer l'utilisation de ce genre de signal dans une optique bas coût dans un milieu urbain automobile pour des applications critiques d'un point de vue sécurité (ce que ne permet pas les techniques d'hybridation classiques). L'amélioration des technologies (réduction de taille des capteurs type MEMS ou Gyroscope) ne peut, à elle seule, atteindre l'objectif d'obtenir une position dont nous pouvons être sûrs si nous utilisons les algorithmes classiques de localisation et d'hybridation. En effet ces techniques permettent d'avoir une position sans cependant permettre d'en quantifier le niveau de confiance. La faisabilité de ces applications repose d'une part sur une recherche approfondie d'axes d'amélioration des algorithmes de localisation, mais aussi et conjointement, sur la possibilité, via les capteurs externes de maintenir un niveau de confiance élevé et quantifié dans la position même en absence de signal satellitaire. ABSTRACT : Satellite navigation has acquired an increased importance during these last years, on the one hand due to the imminent appearance of the European GALILEO system that will complement the American GPS, and on the other hand due to the great success it has encountered in the commercial civil market. An important part of this success is based on the technological development at the receiver level that has rendered satellite navigation possible even in difficult environments. Today's objective is to prepare the utilisation of this kind of signals for land vehicle applications demanding high precision positioning. One of the main challenges within this research domain, which cannot be addressed by classical coupling techniques, is related to the system capability to provide reliable position estimations. The enhancement in dead-reckoning technologies (i.e. size reduction of MEMS-based sensors or gyroscopes) cannot all by itself reach the necessary confidence levels if exploited with classical localization and integration algorithms. Indeed, these techniques provide a position estimation whose reliability or confidence level it is very difficult to quantify. The feasibility of these applications relies not only on an extensive research to enhance the navigation algorithm performances in harsh scenarios, but also and in parallel, on the possibility to maintain, thanks to the presence of additional sensors, a high confidence level on the position estimation even in the absence of satellite navigation signals
Multicast Routing Algorithms and Failure Analyses for Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Networks
In the rapidly changing environment of mobile communications, the importance of the mobile satellite (e,g,, low earth orbit satellites (LEOsats)) networks will increase due to their global visibility and connection. Multicasting is an effective communication method in terms of frequency spectrum usage for a LEO network. It is devised to provide lower network traffic (i,e,, one-to-many transmissions). This research examines the system performance of two dissimilar terrestrially-based multicasting protocols: the Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) and the On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). These two protocols are simulated in large group membership density and in the presence of satellite failures. Two different algorithms are developed and used to select critical satellites for degrading a LEO network constellation. The simulation results show that the ODMRP protocol successfully reconfigured routes in large group membership density areas and in satellite failure conditions. Results also show that the ODMRP provided reliable packet delivery. However, ODMRP showed an enormous end-to-end delay in severe satellite failure conditions. This result is attributable to the delayed route refreshing procedure of ODMRP. In contrast, the DVMRP suffered from broken routes and complexity in the large group membership density and in satellite failure conditions. It had a smaller packet delivery ratio than the ODMRP (approximately 85,5% versus 98,9% for the 80 user case). The DVMRP showed scalable and stable end-to-end delay under multiple failed satellite conditions. The large group membership density and the multiple satellite failure conditions provide a more complete assessment for these two protocols
