Bridging the Gaps: Connecting Research Streams in Organizational Network Research

    Get PDF
Apart from an introduction and conclusion, the present dissertation consists of four chapters in the form of three research papers and one essay. Each of these chapters revolves around organizational networks and attempts to bring research streams together that deal with the same – or similar – phenomena, yet are largely disjunct. In that sense, each chapter is attempting to bridge gaps. The first of these chapters investigates partner selection in business ecosystems and brings together the ecosystem and network literature. Second is an essay which introduces four new effects to a popular method for analyzing network dynamics, bringing together management science and mathematics. Third is a research paper analyzing the interdependence between corporate strategic actions and board interlock networks, bringing together the antecedents and outcomes of the latter. And finally, the fourth of these chapters brings together director- and firm-level research on board interlock networks by estimating the formation of such a network when introducing both levels into a stochastic model. The dissertation advances our understanding of organizational networks and the methods we can use to learn about them

A Systematic Literature Review to Understand Cross-organizational Relationship Management and Collaboration

    Get PDF
An increasingly dynamic, unpredictable and challenging environment leads organizations to cross their own borders and establish partnerships to other organizations for remaining competitive. This cross-organizational relationship allows participating organizations to share resources with each other and collaborate to better handle an identified opportunity for joint work. However, besides having a mutual or compatible goal, it is common that these organizations face several challenges during the partnership. The present research aims to explore the cross-organizational relationship management. To this end, this paper outlines the systematic literature review performed to understand the collaboration and relationship establishment between different organizations and organize an ICT related body of knowledge about the topic. A discussion about the findings, challenges and open issues identified from the retrieved literature is also provided to guide further work

Technological potential of logistics service providers and the relationship dynamics.

Analyzing inter-organizational systems from a power and interest perspective

    Get PDF
Inter-organizational systems (IOS) are ICT-based systems that enable organizations to share information and to electronically conduct business across organizational boundaries. Especially since the increasing availability of the Internet, there have been less technological barriers to implement IOS. However, that does not imply that IOS-possibilities are implemented successfully in all occasions: other barriers may remain. Innovation is not only a technical process of ?solving problems?, it also involves economic and political processes in which interests are articulated, alliances are built and outcomes are struggled over. To explore this observation, this paper presents a model that helps to describe and analyze IOS from a power and interest perspective of multiple parties. To illustrate this model, eight case studies of IOS are discussed, of which two in more depth. After that, we will put the findings of the analysis in a broader perspective. The paper concludes with the assertion that the scope for the design of an effective IOS depends on a combination of technical, economic and social

A Conceptual Analysis of Relational Contracts in Agribusiness Supply Chains: The Case of the Sugar Industry in Swaziland

    Get PDF
This study examines the nature of the relationship between cane growers and millers and how it affects cane growersÂ’ perceptions of the value added in the sugar supply chain. Drawing from relational exchange theory, the study utilised the perceptions of 124 smallholder cane growers in the Swaziland sugar industry. Factors measured in terms of a likert type scale were used to measure each relational construct within the miller-grower contract relationship. The unpacks the trust relationship between large agribusiness companies and smallholder out growers, and shows that relationships characterised by social factors like trust, commitment, and cooperation enhance mutual benefit and quality relationships between parties. This study found that farmers perceive an element of opportunistic behaviour and a lack of cooperation by millers and therefore have limited trust in the millers. Consequently it was also found that satisfaction by cane growers on their relationship with millers has a positive relationship with their level of trust, level of commitment, relative dependence, perception of opportunistic behaviour by millers and perceived cooperation between themselves and the millers. The results point to a number of aspects both growers and millers need to attend to which could contribute to improved relationship and in turn efficiency and returns in the sugar industry in Swaziland.Agribusiness,

Competitive advantage as a legitimacy-creating process

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how small firms in the tattooing industry actively shape institutional expectations of value for consumers in a changing industry. Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws upon interviews with key actors in the firms under study to explore their experiences with consumers and other constituents in determining how competitive advantage is constructed in this environment. These data are complemented data with interviews with governmental representatives and material from secondary sources. Findings – The results reveal efforts of firms to construct and increase organizational legitimacy through the prominence of discourses of professionalism based on artistry and medicine/public health. These bases of competitive differentiation are not the clear result of exogenous pressure, rather they arise through the active efforts of the firm to construct value guidelines for consumers and other constituents. Practical implications – Strategic management in small firms is a complex and dynamic process that does not necessarily mirror that of large organizations. Constructing competitive advantage is an interacting process between key actors of small firms and various constituents. Originality/value – The paper extends the application of institutional theory in strategic management by illuminating the active role that firms play in creating industry norms, especially in industries where norms are not well established or no longer entrenched. Moreover, exploring an alternative site of study offers a means through which to see well-studied issues in new ways

Inter-Organizational Trust as a Shift Parameter in the Extended Transaction Cost Framework: A first Application to the LNG Industry.

This paper provides an empirical analysis examining the effect of both transaction characteristics and the institutional environment on governance choice. Using a dataset of 237 corporate-specific value chains in the global LNG industry, we introduce inter-organizational trust as a shift parameter. Following transaction cost economics, it is hypothesized that specific investments under uncertainty provide incentives to integrate vertically. Second, it is argued that inter-organizational trust changes the relative costs of vertical integration and non-integration and supports less hierarchical organizational structures. These economic relationships are tested based on probit and ordered probit models. Estimation results provide broad support for both propositions.Inter-organizational trust, liquefied natural gas, shift parameter, transaction cost economics, vertical integration

Fractal analysis of growing cities and its relationship with health centre

During recent years, many research group interested in the study of organizational networks from different fields, e.g. studies of behavior of cities growth following the fractal theory. Considering the fractal analysis as a strong tools to analyse the relation between grow of cities and its relation with health center distribution. The propose of this paper is to develop a methodology based on a fractal analysis framework of Chilean public health networks, the population growth of cities and the location of health centers. To produce empirical approach for the analysis of the locations of health centers and its effects. On the other hand the health has been related to other sciences, a clear example is the physics and the mathematics, where we found many studies related with the geometry to understood the nature of the multiple natural shapes, its developed was called fractal nature or mathematic fractal model, this approach consider the different scales. For this reason, we present in this paper some preliminary ideas and some initial results of the analysis of the complex and fractal behavior of urban expansion, and its relation to the location of public health centers through simple counters algorithms and spectral methods using ImaCal software. The study health patterns will become a useful tool for understanding human flow and behavior of health center, where using a traditional measurement as equipment has serious problems and limitations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
