Searching for Sakitawak: Place and People in Northern Saskatchewan\u27s Ăle-Ă -la-Crosse
This presentation is a history of a small community, Ăle-Ă -la-Crosse, located in an area now part of Saskatchewan, Canada. With an historic reputation for cooperation and enviable trading circumstances, its residents traditionally have determined that protection of the community ensured the best opportunities for the advancement and security of individuals. As a result of this belief, residents reinforced their own understandings of sustainability as a means to ensure personal success. The communityâs fame for hosting such a set of norms grew, particularly from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, and outsiders often visited to improve their own efforts as a result of this reputation. Given the belief that community longevity assured individual concerns, many visitors quickly decided to adopt local processes even if those functions contrasted sharply from their own original beliefs. Based on these decisions, the visitorsâ institutions experienced changes as well.
Through this social cooperation to better ensure personal success, a culture began to develop, and so the villageâs distinctive administrative and economic processes were continued through family and neighbourly ties. Some characteristics, such as multiculturalism, shared land use, complex trading activities, and sustainability, further distinguished Ăle-Ă -la-Crosse as a result. Though well aware of the village a number of parties (such as the Hudsonâs Bay Company and the Canadian government), still regularly excluded the community from their deliberations because of its unique ability to supposedly need less intervention considered necessary elsewhere. These various corporate and political authorities, concerned with their own existence, instead emphasised the conditions of communities that demonstrated social hostility, monetary difficulties, and other forms of disparity. As these historic parties failing to appreciate the villageâs positive components in their fullest form, historians also did not integrate the village into their narratives since they almost always focused on conflict and change in their investigations. Because of this missing analysis about Ăle-Ă -la-Crosse, historical accounts have created lacunae in our understanding and awareness not just of local but also of provincial and national issues pertaining to âdevelopment.â Today, the lack of historic and historical awareness has as well directly impacted a modern day Indigenous âland claimâ. Particularly when examining âabsenceâ and âoverlapâ in a spaceâs natural and social form, Ăle-Ă -la-Crosseâs story from its earliest existence to its present shape can finally remind us how local conditions âeven before humans started living in those circumstances â can teach us about how to survive and succeed today as individuals and as part of a larger community and country. It also reminds us how we should pay more attention to peace, cooperation and interaction in both intellectual and social circles

Scientometrics have become an essential element in the practice and evaluation of science and research, including both the evaluation of individuals and national assessment exercises. Yet, researchers and practitioners in this field have lacked clear theories to guide their work. As early as 1981, then doctoral student Blaise Cronin published "The need for a theory of citing" âa call to arms for the fledgling scientometric community to produce foundational theories upon which the work of the field could be based. More than three decades later, the time has come to reach out the field again and ask how they have responded to this call.
This book compiles the foundational theories that guide informetrics and scholarly communication research. It is a much needed compilation by leading scholars in the field that gathers together the theories that guide our understanding of authorship, citing, and impact

Towards unmasking the true employee in South Africaâs contemporary work environment: the perennial problem of labour law
The enormously intricate task of unmasking the true employee in contemporary work environment reveals the dilemmas and complexities embedded in the beguilingly simple but intractable question: who is an employee? The hallmarks of a true employee are shaded in modern work environment given that the actual differences between the categories of âemployeeâ and âindependent contractorâ are diminishing. The conception of self-employment that links being self-employed inextricably with entrepreneurship, ownership, and autonomy has more to do with ideology than reality. In addressing the opacities of form engendered by âWork on demand via appâ and the âUberisation of workâ, the study also attends to the significant and neglected component of labour lawâs traditional dilemma. Put simply, how the law identifies an âemployerâ as a counterparty with an âemployeeâ. Certain features of modern business organisation such as vertical disintegration of production, and their link to the rise of precarious employment underscore the extent to which the concept of employer plays a central role in defining the contours of labour protection. The problems of precarity are deep-seated, long-term and even escalating, especially in compelled and dependent self-employment. Re-appraisal South Africaâs black box of precarious self-employment through the lens of Canadian dependent contractor jurisprudence points to key limitations that should be addressed for a more robust and effective vision of labour regulation. If the definition of âemployeeâ in section 213 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 is amended to redefine an âemployeeâ to include a âdependent contractorâ, this will represent a leap forward in tackling the interlinked problems of disguised employment and precarious self-employment. This statutory redefinition of the employee serves two purposes. First, the dependent contractor category solves the broader challenge for labour regulation of how to extend protection to persons who have some of the trappings of the independent contractor, but, in reality, are in a position of i ii economic dependence, resembling that of an employee. In essence, the intermediate category recognises that, as a matter of fairness persons in economic positions that are closely analogous should be given the same legislative treatment. The second purpose, and one no less important, is to fill in the missing piece of the puzzle in the judicially endorsed three-tiered SITA test for identifying employment relationship. If the dependent contractor category is adopted, the lacuna in the threefold SITA test that has so far escaped scholarly, judicial and legislative will be resolved. In this regard, the study contributes to a line of legal scholarship that has tracked the regulatory trajectory for reforming South Africaâs labour laws. An Investigation on Benefit-Cost Analysis of Greenhouse Structures in Antalya
Significant population increase across the world, loss of cultivable land and increasing demand for food put pressure on agriculture. To meet the demand, greenhouses are built, which are, light structures with transparent cladding material in order to provide controlled microclimatic environment proper for plant production. Conceptually, greenhouses are similar with manufacturing buildings where a controlled environment for manufacturing and production have been provided and proper spaces for standardized production processes have been enabled. Parallel with the trends in the world, particularly in southern regions, greenhouse structures have been increasingly constructed and operated in Turkey. A significant number of greenhouses are located at Antalya. The satellite images demonstrated that for over last three decades, there has been a continuous invasion of greenhouses on all cultivable land. There are various researches and attempts for the improvement of greenhouse design and for increasing food production by decreasing required energy consumption. However, the majority of greenhouses in Turkey are very rudimentary structures where capital required for investment is low, but maintenance requirements are high when compared with new generation greenhouse structures. Knowledge Capturing in Design Briefing Process for Requirement Elicitation and Validation
Knowledge capturing and reusing are major processes of knowledge management that deal with the elicitation of valuable knowledge via some techniques and methods for use in actual and further studies, projects, services, or products. The construction industry, as well, adopts and uses some of these concepts to improve various construction processes and stages. From pre-design to building delivery knowledge management principles and briefing frameworks have been implemented across project stakeholders: client, design teams, construction teams, consultants, and facility management teams. At pre-design and design stages, understanding the clientâs needs and usersâ knowledge are crucial for identifying and articulating the expected requirements and objectives. Due to underperforming results and missed goals and objectives, many projects finish with highly dissatisfied clients and loss of contracts for some organizations. Knowledge capturing has beneficial effects via its principles and methods on requirement elicitation and validation at the briefing stage between user, client and designer. This paper presents the importance and usage of knowledge capturing and reusing in briefing process at pre-design and design stages especially the involvement of client and user, and explores the techniques and technologies that are usable in briefing process for requirement elicitation
