    Knowledge discovery through creating formal contexts

    Knowledge discovery is important for systems that have computational intelligence in helping them learn and adapt to changing environments. By representing, in a formal way, the context in which an intelligent system operates, it is possible to discover knowledge through an emerging data technology called Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). This paper describes a tool called FcaBedrock that converts data into Formal Contexts for FCA. The paper describes how, through a process of guided automation, data preparation techniques such as attribute exclusion and value restriction allow data to be interpreted to meet the requirements of the analysis. Creating Formal Contexts using FcaBedrock is shown to be straightforward and versatile. Large data sets are easily converted into a standard FCA format

    Human-Computer Interaction for Development: A knowledge mobilisation framework

    Human-computer interaction for development (HCI4D) is an interdisciplinary field aimed at understanding and designing technologies for under-served, under-resourced, and under-represented populations around the world. The interdisciplinary nature complicates knowledge transfer and articulation between the disciplines contributing to the HCI4D domain with the consequence that researchers in one sub-domain do not always build on the extant theoretical and methodological progress in other sub-domains. The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for HCI4D that could facilitate a better understanding of this domain, for knowledge mobilisation and articulation between researchers in HCI4D and the related field of information and communication technology for development (ICT4D). Previous studies have presented an overview of the HCI4D field in terms of the geographies it covers, technologies it targets, and its varied epistemological and methodological underpinnings. This paper builds on those methodologies and findings to conduct a systematic literature review which revisits the domain questions, thus, the core issues and topics (why), the phenomenon of interest (what) and the research methods (how). A comparison of the findings from three seminal HCI4D papers led to the identification of three core issues (motor themes) namely, context, design and development. Based on Ward’s idea of a knowledge mobilisation framework, the findings from the systematic literature review are then synthesised and presented as a framework which comprises the core issues, recurring themes and the salient elements for each of the domain questions.     Low Power Processor Architectures and Contemporary Techniques for Power Optimization – A Review

    The technological evolution has increased the number of transistors for a given die area significantly and increased the switching speed from few MHz to GHz range. Such inversely proportional decline in size and boost in performance consequently demands shrinking of supply voltage and effective power dissipation in chips with millions of transistors. This has triggered substantial amount of research in power reduction techniques into almost every aspect of the chip and particularly the processor cores contained in the chip. This paper presents an overview of techniques for achieving the power efficiency mainly at the processor core level but also visits related domains such as buses and memories. There are various processor parameters and features such as supply voltage, clock frequency, cache and pipelining which can be optimized to reduce the power consumption of the processor. This paper discusses various ways in which these parameters can be optimized. Also, emerging power efficient processor architectures are overviewed and research activities are discussed which should help reader identify how these factors in a processor contribute to power consumption. Some of these concepts have been already established whereas others are still active research areas. © 2009 ACADEMY PUBLISHER

    The IEEE bibliographic database contains a number of proven duplications with indication of the original paper(s) copied. This corpus is used to test a method for the detection of hidden intertextuality (commonly named "plagiarism"). The intertextual distance, combined with the sliding window and with various classification techniques, identifies these duplications with a very low risk of error. These experiments also show that several factors blur the identity of the scientific author, including variable group authorship and the high levels of intertextuality accepted, and sometimes desired, in scientific papers on the same topic

    A framework to maximise the communicative power of knowledge visualisations

    Knowledge visualisation, in the field of information systems, is both a process and a product, informed by the closely aligned fields of information visualisation and knowledg management. Knowledge visualisation has untapped potential within the purview of knowledge communication. Even so, knowledge visualisations are infrequently deployed due to a lack of evidence-based guidance. To improve this situation, we carried out a systematic literature review to derive a number of “lenses” that can be used to reveal the essential perspectives to feed into the visualisation production process.We propose a conceptual framework which incorporates these lenses to guide producers of knowledge visualisations. This framework uses the different lenses to reveal critical perspectives that need to be considered during the design process. We conclude by demonstrating how this framework could be used to produce an effective knowledge visualisation
