Logic-Based Decision Support for Strategic Environmental Assessment
Strategic Environmental Assessment is a procedure aimed at introducing
systematic assessment of the environmental effects of plans and programs. This
procedure is based on the so-called coaxial matrices that define dependencies
between plan activities (infrastructures, plants, resource extractions,
buildings, etc.) and positive and negative environmental impacts, and
dependencies between these impacts and environmental receptors. Up to now, this
procedure is manually implemented by environmental experts for checking the
environmental effects of a given plan or program, but it is never applied
during the plan/program construction. A decision support system, based on a
clear logic semantics, would be an invaluable tool not only in assessing a
single, already defined plan, but also during the planning process in order to
produce an optimized, environmentally assessed plan and to study possible
alternative scenarios. We propose two logic-based approaches to the problem,
one based on Constraint Logic Programming and one on Probabilistic Logic
Programming that could be, in the future, conveniently merged to exploit the
advantages of both. We test the proposed approaches on a real energy plan and

A Lightweight Distributed Solution to Content Replication in Mobile Networks
Performance and reliability of content access in mobile networks is
conditioned by the number and location of content replicas deployed at the
network nodes. Facility location theory has been the traditional, centralized
approach to study content replication: computing the number and placement of
replicas in a network can be cast as an uncapacitated facility location
problem. The endeavour of this work is to design a distributed, lightweight
solution to the above joint optimization problem, while taking into account the
network dynamics. In particular, we devise a mechanism that lets nodes share
the burden of storing and providing content, so as to achieve load balancing,
and decide whether to replicate or drop the information so as to adapt to a
dynamic content demand and time-varying topology. We evaluate our mechanism
through simulation, by exploring a wide range of settings and studying
realistic content access mechanisms that go beyond the traditional
assumptionmatching demand points to their closest content replica. Results show
that our mechanism, which uses local measurements only, is: (i) extremely
precise in approximating an optimal solution to content placement and
replication; (ii) robust against network mobility; (iii) flexible in
accommodating various content access patterns, including variation in time and
space of the content demand.Comment: 12 page
Grand Challenge: Real-time Destination and ETA Prediction for Maritime Traffic
In this paper, we present our approach for solving the DEBS Grand Challenge
2018. The challenge asks to provide a prediction for (i) a destination and the
(ii) arrival time of ships in a streaming-fashion using Geo-spatial data in the
maritime context. Novel aspects of our approach include the use of ensemble
learning based on Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT),
XGBoost Trees and Extremely Randomized Trees (ERT) in order to provide a
prediction for a destination while for the arrival time, we propose the use of
Feed-forward Neural Networks. In our evaluation, we were able to achieve an
accuracy of 97% for the port destination classification problem and 90% (in
mins) for the ETA prediction
