    Low-Power Embedded Design Solutions and Low-Latency On-Chip Interconnect Architecture for System-On-Chip Design

    This dissertation presents three design solutions to support several key system-on-chip (SoC) issues to achieve low-power and high performance. These are: 1) joint source and channel decoding (JSCD) schemes for low-power SoCs used in portable multimedia systems, 2) efficient on-chip interconnect architecture for massive multimedia data streaming on multiprocessor SoCs (MPSoCs), and 3) data processing architecture for low-power SoCs in distributed sensor network (DSS) systems and its implementation. The first part includes a low-power embedded low density parity check code (LDPC) - H.264 joint decoding architecture to lower the baseband energy consumption of a channel decoder using joint source decoding and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). A low-power multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and H.264 video joint detector/decoder design that minimizes energy for portable, wireless embedded systems is also designed. In the second part, a link-level quality of service (QoS) scheme using unequal error protection (UEP) for low-power network-on-chip (NoC) and low latency on-chip network designs for MPSoCs is proposed. This part contains WaveSync, a low-latency focused network-on-chip architecture for globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) designs and a simultaneous dual-path routing (SDPR) scheme utilizing path diversity present in typical mesh topology network-on-chips. SDPR is akin to having a higher link width but without the significant hardware overhead associated with simple bus width scaling. The last part shows data processing unit designs for embedded SoCs. We propose a data processing and control logic design for a new radiation detection sensor system generating data at or above Peta-bits-per-second level. Implementation results show that the intended clock rate is achieved within the power target of less than 200mW. We also present a digital signal processing (DSP) accelerator supporting configurable MAC, FFT, FIR, and 3-D cross product operations for embedded SoCs.     A Computational Model Of The Intelligibility Of American Sign Language Video And Video Coding Applications

    Real-time, two-way transmission of American Sign Language (ASL) video over cellular networks provides natural communication among members of the Deaf community. Bandwidth restrictions on cellular networks and limited computational power on cellular devices necessitate the use of advanced video coding techniques designed explicitly for ASL video. As a communication tool, compressed ASL video must be evaluated according to the intelligibility of the conversation, not according to conventional definitions of video quality. The intelligibility evaluation can either be performed using human subjects participating in perceptual experiments or using computational models suitable for ASL video. This dissertation addresses each of these issues in turn, presenting a computational model of the intelligibility of ASL video, which is demonstrated to be accurate with respect to true intelligibility ratings as provided by human subjects. The computational model affords the development of video compression techniques that are optimized for ASL video. Guided by linguistic principles and human perception of ASL, this dissertation presents a full-reference computational model of intelligibility for ASL (CIM-ASL) that is suitable for evaluating compressed ASL video. The CIM-ASL measures distortions only in regions relevant for ASL communication, using spatial and temporal pooling mechanisms that vary the contribution of distortions according to their relative impact on the intelligibility of the compressed video. The model is trained and evaluated using ground truth experimental data, collected in three separate perceptual studies. The CIM-ASL provides accurate estimates of subjective intelligibility and demonstrates statistically significant improvements over computational models traditionally used to estimate video quality. The CIM-ASL is incorporated into an H.264/AVC compliant video coding framework, creating a closed-loop encoding system optimized explicitly for ASL intelligibility. This intelligibility optimized coder achieves bitrate reductions between 10% and 42% without reducing intelligibility, when compared to a general purpose H.264/AVC encoder. The intelligibility optimized encoder is refined by introducing reduced complexity encoding modes, which yield a 16% improvement in encoding speed. The purpose of the intelligibility optimized encoder is to generate video that is suitable for real-time ASL communication. Ultimately, the preferences of ASL users determine the success of the intelligibility optimized coder. User preferences are explicitly evaluated in a perceptual experiment in which ASL users select between the intelligibility optimized coder and a general purpose video coder. The results of this experiment demonstrate that the preferences vary depending on the demographics of the participants and that a significant proportion of users prefer the intelligibility optimized coder

However there is no standard for provisioning the Triple play services, rather they are provisioned individually, since the requirements are quite different for each service. The digital revolution helped to create and deliver a high quality media solutions. One of the most demanding services is the Video on Demand (VoD). This implicates a dedicated streaming channel for each user in order to provide normal media player commands (as pause, fast forward). Most of the multimedia companies that develops personalized products does not always fulfil the users needs and are far from being cheap solutions. The goal of the project was to create a reliable and scalable triple play solution that works via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), fully capable of dealing with the existing state of the art multimedia technologies only resorting to open-source tools. This project was design to be a transparent web environment using only web technologies to maximize the potential of the services. HyperText Markup Language (HTML),Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript were the used technologies for the development of the applications. Both a administration and user interfaces were developed to fully manage all video contents and properly view it in a rich and appealing application, providing the proof of concept. The developed prototype was tested in a WLAN with up to four clients and the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) was measured for several combinations of active services. In the end it is possible to acknowledge that the developed prototype was capable of dealing with all the problems of WLAN technologies and successfully delivery all the proposed services with high QoE

    Smart Sensor Technologies for IoT

    The recent development in wireless networks and devices has led to novel services that will utilize wireless communication on a new level. Much effort and resources have been dedicated to establishing new communication networks that will support machine-to-machine communication and the Internet of Things (IoT). In these systems, various smart and sensory devices are deployed and connected, enabling large amounts of data to be streamed. Smart services represent new trends in mobile services, i.e., a completely new spectrum of context-aware, personalized, and intelligent services and applications. A variety of existing services utilize information about the position of the user or mobile device. The position of mobile devices is often achieved using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chips that are integrated into all modern mobile devices (smartphones). However, GNSS is not always a reliable source of position estimates due to multipath propagation and signal blockage. Moreover, integrating GNSS chips into all devices might have a negative impact on the battery life of future IoT applications. Therefore, alternative solutions to position estimation should be investigated and implemented in IoT applications. This Special Issue, “Smart Sensor Technologies for IoT” aims to report on some of the recent research efforts on this increasingly important topic.     Priority-Based Heading One Detector in H.264/AVC Decoding

    A novel priority-based heading one detector for Exp-Golomb/CAVLC decoding of H.264/AVC is presented. It exploits the statistical distribution of input encoded codewords and adopts a nonuniform partition decoding scheme for the detector. Compared with a conventional design without power optimization, the power consumption can be reduced by more than 3 times while the performance is maintained and the design hardware cost does not increase. The proposed detector has successfully been verified and implemented in a complete H.264/AVC decoding system
