A knowledge representation semantic network for a natural language syntactic analyzer based on the UML
The need for improving software processes approximated the software engineering and artificial intelligence areas. Artificial intelligence techniques have been used as a support to software development processes, particularly through intelligent assistants that offer a knowledge-based support to software process’ activities. The context of the present work is a project for an intelligent assistant that implements a linguistic technique with the purpose of extracting object-oriented elements from requirement specifications in natural language through two main functionalities: the syntactic and semantic analyses. The syntactic analysis has the purpose of extracting the syntactic constituents from a sentence; and the semantic analysis has the goal of extracting the meaning from a set of sentences, i.e., a text. This paper focuses on the syntactic analysis functionality and applies the UML to its core as a semantic network for knowledge representation, based on the premise that the UML is de facto a standard general modeling language for software development.Applications in Artificial Intelligence - Language ProcessingRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
Concurrent Lexicalized Dependency Parsing: A Behavioral View on ParseTalk Events
The behavioral specification of an object-oriented grammar model is
considered. The model is based on full lexicalization, head-orientation via
valency constraints and dependency relations, inheritance as a means for
non-redundant lexicon specification, and concurrency of computation. The
computation model relies upon the actor paradigm, with concurrency entering
through asynchronous message passing between actors. In particular, we here
elaborate on principles of how the global behavior of a lexically distributed
grammar and its corresponding parser can be specified in terms of event type
networks and event networks, resp.Comment: 68kB, 5pages Postscrip

Turning Informal Thesauri Into Formal Ontologies: A Feasibility Study on Biomedical Knowledge re-Use
This paper reports a large-scale knowledge conversion and curation experiment. Biomedical domain knowledge from a semantically weak and shallow terminological
resource, the UMLS, is transformed into a rigorous description logics format. This
way, the broad coverage of the UMLS is combined with inference mechanisms for
consistency and cycle checking. They are the key to proper cleansing of the knowledge
directly imported from the UMLS, as well as subsequent updating, maintenance and
refinement of large knowledge repositories. The emerging biomedical knowledge base
currently comprises more than 240 000 conceptual entities and hence constitutes one
of the largest formal knowledge repositories ever built
