Two-choice regulation in heterogeneous closed networks
A heterogeneous closed network with one-server queues with finite capacity
and one infinite-server queue is studied. A target application is bike-sharing
systems. Heterogeneity is taken into account through clusters whose queues have
the same parameters. Incentives to the customer to go to the least loaded
one-server queue among two chosen within a cluster are investigated. By
mean-field arguments, the limiting queue length stationary distribution as the
number of queues gets large is analytically tractable. Moreover, when all
customers follow incentives, the probability that a queue is empty or full is
approximated. Sizing the system to improve performance is reachable under this
policy.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
A Stochastic Model for Car-Sharing Systems
Vehicle-sharing systems are becoming important for urban transportation. In
these systems, users arrive at a station, pick up a vehicle, use it for a while
and then return it to another station of their choice. Depending on the type of
system, there might be a possibility to book vehicles before picking-up and/or
a parking space at the chosen arrival station. Each station has a finite
capacity and cannot host more vehicles and reserved parking spaces than its
capacity. We propose a stochastic model for an homogeneous car-sharing system
with possibility to reserve a parking space at the arrival station when
picking-up a car. We compute the performance of the system and the optimal
fleet size according to a specific metric. It differs from a similar model for
bike-sharing systems because of reservation that induces complexity, especially
when traffic increases
On-line proactive relocation and regulation strategies for one-way station-based car-sharing systems
This study examines the on-line proactive planning of relocations in a one-way station-based electric car-sharing system that implements a complete parking reservation policy. A Markovian model that utilizes reservation information is formulated in order to estimate the expected near-future shortages of vehicles and parking spots at each station. The outcome of the model is used in algorithms for staff-based and user-based relocations. The proposed algorithms are tested in a simulation environment using data derived from a real-world car-sharing system. In addition, in collaboration with a car-sharing operator, the algorithms are test in the field
Computing Incentives for User-Based Relocation in Carsharing
Carsharing offers an environmentally friendly alternative to private car ownership. However, carsharing providers face the challenging task of matching shifting vehicle supply with fluctuating customer demand to prevent related operational inefficiencies and ensure customer satisfaction. To date, researchers have improved existing relocation strategies and developed new concepts with the use of information technology tools. Still, current literature lacks research on optimization and implementation of user-based relocation solutions. The most urgent need currently lies in the development of algorithms to compute and implement effective incentives for user-based relocation. We address these needs by utilizing a design science research approach to develop an automated machine learning-based incentive computation solution for incentivizing user-based relocation. We use a survey of 274 participants resulting in 1370 individual data points to train an incentive computation model, which is then applied within a small-scale field test. Results suggest that the algorithm computes appropriate incentives
Incentives and Redistribution in Homogeneous Bike-Sharing Systems with Stations of Finite Capacity
Bike-sharing systems are becoming important for urban transportation. In such
systems, users arrive at a station, take a bike and use it for a while, then
return it to another station of their choice. Each station has a finite
capacity: it cannot host more bikes than its capacity. We propose a stochastic
model of an homogeneous bike-sharing system and study the effect of users
random choices on the number of problematic stations, i.e., stations that, at a
given time, have no bikes available or no available spots for bikes to be
returned to. We quantify the influence of the station capacities, and we
compute the fleet size that is optimal in terms of minimizing the proportion of
problematic stations. Even in a homogeneous city, the system exhibits a poor
performance: the minimal proportion of problematic stations is of the order of
(but not lower than) the inverse of the capacity. We show that simple
incentives, such as suggesting users to return to the least loaded station
among two stations, improve the situation by an exponential factor. We also
compute the rate at which bikes have to be redistributed by trucks to insure a
given quality of service. This rate is of the order of the inverse of the
station capacity. For all cases considered, the fleet size that corresponds to
the best performance is half of the total number of spots plus a few more, the
value of the few more can be computed in closed-form as a function of the
system parameters. It corresponds to the average number of bikes in
circulation
On-line proactive relocation strategies in station-based one-way car-sharing systems
In this work, we study the integration of relocation activities and system regulations in the operation of one-way car-sharing systems. Specifically, we consider the on-line proactive planning of relocations in a one-way station-based car-sharing system that implements a complete journey reservation policy. Under such policy, a userâs request is accepted only if at the booking time, a vehicle is available at the origin station and a parking spot is available at the destination station. If a request is accepted, the vehicle is reserved until the user arrives at the vehicle and the spot is reserved until the user returns the vehicle. Each parking spot may be in one of the following states: empty free spot, empty reserved spot, available vehicle and reserved vehicle. The reserved vehicles/spots provide additional information regarding spots/vehicles that are about to become available. We thus propose utilizing this information in order to plan relocation activities and implement impactful demand shifting strategies. We devise two relocation policies and two demand shifting strategies that are based on the evaluation of the near future states of the system. Using a purpose-built event based simulation, we compare these polices to a state-of-the-art inventory rebalancing policy. An extensive numerical experiment is performed in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed policies under various system configurations
Dynamic prediction-based relocation policies in one-way station-based carsharing systems with complete journey reservations
In this paper, we study the operations of a one-way station-based carsharing system implementing a complete journey reservation policy. We consider the percentage of served demand as a primary performance measure and analyze the effect of several dynamic staff-based relocation policies. Specifically, we introduce a new proactive relocation policy based on Markov chain dynamics that utilizes reservation information to better predict the future states of the stations. This policy is compared to a state-of-the art staff-based relocation policy and a centralistic relocation model assuming full knowledge of the demand. Numerical results from a real-world implementation and a simulation analysis demonstrate the positive impact of dynamic relocations and highlight the improvement in performance obtained with the proposed proactive relocation policy
