It addresses some of the criticisms commonly made against transcendental argumentation and sets the scene for the papers which follow

Preface : CAA 2010: Computer assisted assessment: supporting student learning

The Preface for the first special issue for the International Journal of e-Assessment highlights the role of the assessment for learning agenda. It also points to papers within the special issue which relate to: (a) Overcoming the barriers to supporting student learning with computer-assisted assessment; (b) Marking and computer-assisted assessment; (c) Harnessing the technology to improve efficiency and pedagogy. The papers in this issue stress the general recognition that times are changing and that assessment needs to become embedded in the teaching/learning cycle and not purely as a checking device for the awarding institution. These papers encourage us to rise to the challenge of developing more sophisticated computer-assisted assessment systems that support student learning and there is still a lot to do

In this Preface to the Special Issue on “The Impact of Resilience in Developing Individual and Organizational Capacity to ‘Bounce Back’ from Challenges”, I introduce the need to study resilience in HRD, and lay out the most fundamental concerns surrounding the use of the term resilience in contemporary workplaces and scientific discourse. I also introduce the papers published in the Special Issue, and link them to the overall narrative around resilience at work

Uncertainty in climate change impacts on basin-scale freshwater resources – preface to the special issue: the QUEST-GSI methodology and synthesis of results

This paper presents a preface to this Special Issue on the results of the QUEST-GSI (Global Scale Impacts) project on climate change impacts on catchment-scale water resources. A detailed description of the unified methodology, subsequently used in all studies in this issue, is provided. The project method involved running simulations of catchment-scale hydrology using a unified set of past and future climate scenarios, to enable a consistent analysis of the climate impacts around the globe. These scenarios include "policy-relevant" prescribed warming scenarios. This is followed by a synthesis of the key findings. Overall, the studies indicate that in most basins the models project substantial changes to river flow, beyond that observed in the historical record, but that in many cases there is considerable uncertainty in the magnitude and sign of the projected changes. The implications of this for adaptation activities are discussed

Remote Sensing in Agriculture: State-of-the-Art

The Special Issue on “Remote Sensing in Agriculture: State-of-the-Art” gives an exhaustive overview of the ongoing remote sensing technology transfer into the agricultural sector. It consists of 10 high-quality papers focusing on a wide range of remote sensing models and techniques to forecast crop production and yield, to map agricultural landscape and to evaluate plant and soil biophysical features. Satellite, RPAS, and SAR data were involved. This preface describes shortly each contribution published in such Special Issue
