    Dense 3D Face Correspondence

    We present an algorithm that automatically establishes dense correspondences between a large number of 3D faces. Starting from automatically detected sparse correspondences on the outer boundary of 3D faces, the algorithm triangulates existing correspondences and expands them iteratively by matching points of distinctive surface curvature along the triangle edges. After exhausting keypoint matches, further correspondences are established by generating evenly distributed points within triangles by evolving level set geodesic curves from the centroids of large triangles. A deformable model (K3DM) is constructed from the dense corresponded faces and an algorithm is proposed for morphing the K3DM to fit unseen faces. This algorithm iterates between rigid alignment of an unseen face followed by regularized morphing of the deformable model. We have extensively evaluated the proposed algorithms on synthetic data and real 3D faces from the FRGCv2, Bosphorus, BU3DFE and UND Ear databases using quantitative and qualitative benchmarks. Our algorithm achieved dense correspondences with a mean localisation error of 1.28mm on synthetic faces and detected 1414 anthropometric landmarks on unseen real faces from the FRGCv2 database with 3mm precision. Furthermore, our deformable model fitting algorithm achieved 98.5% face recognition accuracy on the FRGCv2 and 98.6% on Bosphorus database.     Predict brain MR image registration via sparse learning of appearance and transformation

    We propose a new approach to register the subject image with the template by leveraging a set of intermediate images that are pre-aligned to the template. We argue that, if points in the subject and the intermediate images share similar local appearances, they may have common correspondence in the template. In this way, we learn the sparse representation of a certain subject point to reveal several similar candidate points in the intermediate images. Each selected intermediate candidate can bridge the correspondence from the subject point to the template space, thus predicting the transformation associated with the subject point at the confidence level that relates to the learned sparse coefficient. Following this strategy, we first predict transformations at selected key points, and retain multiple predictions on each key point, instead of allowing only a single correspondence. Then, by utilizing all key points and their predictions with varying confidences, we adaptively reconstruct the dense transformation field that warps the subject to the template. We further embed the prediction-reconstruction protocol above into a multi-resolution hierarchy. In the final, we refine our estimated transformation field via existing registration method in effective manners. We apply our method to registering brain MR images, and conclude that the proposed framework is competent to improve registration performances substantially

    Statistical Shape Modelling and Segmentation of the Respiratory Airway

    The human respiratory airway consists of the upper (nasal cavity, pharynx) and the lower (trachea, bronchi) respiratory tracts. Accurate segmentation of these two airway tracts can lead to better diagnosis and interpretation of airway-specific diseases, and lead to improvement in the localization of abnormal metabolic or pathological sites found within and/or surrounding the respiratory regions. Due to the complexity and the variability displayed in the anatomical structure of the upper respiratory airway along with the challenges in distinguishing the nasal cavity from non-respiratory regions such as the paranasal sinuses, it is difficult for existing algorithms to accurately segment the upper airway without manual intervention. This thesis presents an implicit non-parametric framework for constructing a statistical shape model (SSM) of the upper and lower respiratory tract, capable of distinct shape generation and be adapted for segmentation. An SSM of the nasal cavity was successfully constructed using 50 nasal CT scans. The performance of the SSM was evaluated for compactness, specificity and generality. An averaged distance error of 1.47 mm was measured for the generality assessment. The constructed SSM was further adapted with a modified locally constrained random walk algorithm to segment the nasal cavity. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on 30 CT images and outperformed comparative state-of-the-art and conventional algorithms. For the lower airway, a separate algorithm was proposed to automatically segment the trachea and bronchi, and was designed to tolerate the image characteristics inherent in low-contrast CT images. The algorithm was evaluated on 20 clinical low-contrast CT from PET-CT patient studies and demonstrated better performance (87.1±2.8 DSC and distance error of 0.37±0.08 mm) in segmentation results against comparative state-of-the-art algorithms

    Unsupervised alignment of objects in images

    With the advent of computer vision, various applications become interested to apply it to interpret the 3D and 2D scenes. The main core of computer vision is visual object detection which deals with detecting and representing objects in the image. Visual object detection requires to learn a model of each class type (e.g. car, cat) to be capable to detect objects belonging to the same class. Class learning benefits from a method which automatically aligns class examples making learning more straightforward. The objective of this thesis is to further develop the sate-of-the-art feature-based alignment method which rigidly and automatically aligns object class images to a manually selected seed image. We try to compensate the weakness by providing a method to automatically select the best seed from dataset. Our method first extracts features by utilizing dense sampling method and then scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) descriptor is used to find best matches as initial local feature matches. The final alignment is based on spatial scoring procedure where the initial matches are refined to a set of spatially verified matches. The spatial score is used next to calculate similarity scores. We propose an algorithm which operates on spatial and similarity scores and finally selects the best seed. We also investigate the performance of step-wise alignment using minimum spanning tree (MST) and Dijkstra shortest path instead of direct alignment utilizing a single seed. We conduct our experiments using classes of Caltech-101 for which our unsupervised seed selection and step-wise alignment achieve state-of-the-art performance
