    GreenVis: Energy-Saving Color Schemes for Sequential Data Visualization on OLED Displays

    The organic light emitting diode (OLED) display has recently become popular in the consumer electronics market. Compared with current LCD display technology, OLED is an emerging display technology that emits light by the pixels themselves and doesn’t need an external back light as the illumination source. In this paper, we offer an approach to reduce power consumption on OLED displays for sequential data visualization. First, we create a multi-objective optimization approach to find the most energy-saving color scheme for given visual perception difference levels. Second, we apply the model in two situations: pre-designed color schemes and auto generated color schemes. Third, our experiment results show that the energy-saving sequential color scheme can reduce power consumption by 17.2% for pre-designed color schemes. For auto-generated color schemes, it can save 21.9% of energy in comparison to the reference color scheme for sequential data

    LAPSE: Low-Overhead Adaptive Power Saving and Contrast Enhancement for OLEDs

    Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display panels are becoming increasingly popular especially in mobile devices; one of the key characteristics of these panels is that their power consumption strongly depends on the displayed image. In this paper we propose LAPSE, a new methodology to concurrently reduce the energy consumed by an OLED display and enhance the contrast of the displayed image, that relies on image-specific pixel-by-pixel transformations. Unlike previous approaches, LAPSE focuses specifically on reducing the overheads required to implement the transformation at runtime. To this end, we propose a transformation that can be executed in real time, either in software, with low time overhead, or in a hardware accelerator with a small area and low energy budget. Despite the significant reduction in complexity, we obtain comparable results to those achieved with more complex approaches in terms of power saving and image quality. Moreover, our method allows to easily explore the full quality-versus-power tradeoff by acting on a few basic parameters; thus, it enables the runtime selection among multiple display quality settings, according to the status of the system

    Producing green computing images to optimize power consumption in OLED-based displays

    Energy consumption in Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) depends on the displayed contents. The power consumed by an OLED-based display is directly proportional to the luminance of the image pixels. In this paper, a novel idea is proposed to generate energy-efficient images, which consume less power when shown on an OLED-based display. The Blue color component of an image pixel is the most power-hungry i.e. it consumes more power as compared to the Red and Green color components. The main idea is to reduce the intensity of the blue color to the best possible level so that the overall power consumption is reduced while maintaining the perceptual quality of an image. The idea is inspired by the famous “Land Effect”, which demonstrates that it is possible to generate a full-color image by using only two color components instead of three. experiments are performed on the Kodak image database. The results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the power consumption by 18% on average and the modified images do not lose the perceptual quality. Social media platform, where users scroll over many images, is an ideal application for the proposed method since it will greatly reduce the power consumption in mobile phones during surfing social networking applications

    High-dynamic-range Foveated Near-eye Display System

    Wearable near-eye display has found widespread applications in education, gaming, entertainment, engineering, military training, and healthcare, just to name a few. However, the visual experience provided by current near-eye displays still falls short to what we can perceive in the real world. Three major challenges remain to be overcome: 1) limited dynamic range in display brightness and contrast, 2) inadequate angular resolution, and 3) vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) issue. This dissertation is devoted to addressing these three critical issues from both display panel development and optical system design viewpoints. A high-dynamic-range (HDR) display requires both high peak brightness and excellent dark state. In the second and third chapters, two mainstream display technologies, namely liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED), are investigated to extend their dynamic range. On one hand, LCD can easily boost its peak brightness to over 1000 nits, but it is challenging to lower the dark state to \u3c 0.01 nits. To achieve HDR, we propose to use a mini-LED local dimming backlight. Based on our simulations and subjective experiments, we establish practical guidelines to correlate the device contrast ratio, viewing distance, and required local dimming zone number. On the other hand, self-emissive OLED display exhibits a true dark state, but boosting its peak brightness would unavoidably cause compromised lifetime. We propose a systematic approach to enhance OLED\u27s optical efficiency while keeping indistinguishable angular color shift. These findings will shed new light to guide future HDR display designs. In Chapter four, in order to improve angular resolution, we demonstrate a multi-resolution foveated display system with two display panels and an optical combiner. The first display panel provides wide field of view for peripheral vision, while the second panel offers ultra-high resolution for the central fovea. By an optical minifying system, both 4x and 5x enhanced resolutions are demonstrated. In addition, a Pancharatnam-Berry phase deflector is applied to actively shift the high-resolution region, in order to enable eye-tracking function. The proposed design effectively reduces the pixelation and screen-door effect in near-eye displays. The VAC issue in stereoscopic displays is believed to be the main cause of visual discomfort and fatigue when wearing VR headsets. In Chapter five, we propose a novel polarization-multiplexing approach to achieve multiplane display. A polarization-sensitive Pancharatnam-Berry phase lens and a spatial polarization modulator are employed to simultaneously create two independent focal planes. This method enables generation of two image planes without the need of temporal multiplexing. Therefore, it can effectively reduce the frame rate by one-half.     Color-Perception-Guided Display Power Reduction for Virtual Reality

    Battery life is an increasingly urgent challenge for today's untethered VR and AR devices. However, the power efficiency of head-mounted displays is naturally at odds with growing computational requirements driven by better resolution, refresh rate, and dynamic ranges, all of which reduce the sustained usage time of untethered AR/VR devices. For instance, the Oculus Quest 2, under a fully-charged battery, can sustain only 2 to 3 hours of operation time. Prior display power reduction techniques mostly target smartphone displays. Directly applying smartphone display power reduction techniques, however, degrades the visual perception in AR/VR with noticeable artifacts. For instance, the "power-saving mode" on smartphones uniformly lowers the pixel luminance across the display and, as a result, presents an overall darkened visual perception to users if directly applied to VR content. Our key insight is that VR display power reduction must be cognizant of the gaze-contingent nature of high field-of-view VR displays. To that end, we present a gaze-contingent system that, without degrading luminance, minimizes the display power consumption while preserving high visual fidelity when users actively view immersive video sequences. This is enabled by constructing a gaze-contingent color discrimination model through psychophysical studies, and a display power model (with respect to pixel color) through real-device measurements. Critically, due to the careful design decisions made in constructing the two models, our algorithm is cast as a constrained optimization problem with a closed-form solution, which can be implemented as a real-time, image-space shader. We evaluate our system using a series of psychophysical studies and large-scale analyses on natural images. Experiment results show that our system reduces the display power by as much as 24% with little to no perceptual fidelity degradation
