Behaviour of traditional Portuguese timber roof structures
The aim of this paper is to present the results of a structural analysis of common trusses traditionally used in roof construction in Portugal. The study includes the results of a preliminary survey intending to assess the geometry, materials and on site pathologies, as well as a twodimensional linear elastic static and dynamic analysis. The trusses behaviour under symmetric and non-symmetric loads, the king post/tie-beam connection, the stiffness of the joints and the incorrect positioning of the purlins, were some of the structural aspects that have been investigated
Triangular buckling patterns of twisted inextensible strips
When twisting a strip of paper or acetate under high longitudinal tension,
one observes, at some critical load, a buckling of the strip into a regular
triangular pattern. Very similar triangular facets have recently been observed
in solutions to a new set of geometrically-exact equations describing the
equilibrium shape of thin inextensible elastic strips. Here we formulate a
modified boundary-value problem for these equations and construct post-buckling
solutions in good agreement with the observed pattern in twisted strips. We
also study the force-extension and moment-twist behaviour of these strips by
varying the mode number n of triangular facets
King post truss as a motif for internal structure of (meta)material with controlled elastic properties
One of the most interesting challenges in the modern theory of materials consists in the determination of those microstructures which produce, at the macro-level, a class of metamaterials whose elastic range is many orders of magnitude wider than the one exhibited by ‘standard’ materials. In Dell’Isola et al. (2015 Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Physik 66, 3473- 3498. (doi: 10.1007/s00033-015-0556-4)), it was proved that, with a pantographic microstructure constituted by ‘long’ microbeams it is possible to obtainmetamaterials whose elastic range spans up to an elongation exceeding 30%. In this paper, we demonstrate that the same behaviour can be obtained bymeans of an internal microstructure based on a king post motif. This solution shows many advantages: it involves only microbeams; all constituting beams are undergoing only extension or compression; all internal constraints are terminal pivots. While the elastic deformation energy can be determined as easily as in the case of long-beam microstructure, the proposed design seems to have obvious remarkable advantages: it seems to be more damage resistant and therefore to be able to have a wider elastic range; it can be realized with the same three-dimensional printing technology; it seems to be less subject to compression buckling. The analysis which we present here includes: (i) the determination of Hencky-type discrete models for king post trusses, (ii) the application of an effective integration scheme to a class of relevant deformation tests for the proposed metamaterial and (iii) the numerical determination of an equivalent second gradient continuum model. The numerical tools which we have developed and which are presented here can be readily used to develop an extensive measurement campaign for the proposed metamaterial
Helical buckling of a whirling conducting rod in a uniform magnetic field
We study the effect of a magnetic field on the behaviour of a conducting
elastic rod subject to a novel set of boundary conditions that, in the case of
a transversely isotropic rod, give rise to exact helical post-buckling
solutions. The equations used are the geometrically exact Kirchhoff equations
and both static (buckling) and dynamic (whirling) instability are considered.
Critical loads are obtained explicitly and are given by a surprisingly simple
formula. By solving the linearised equations about the (quasi-)stationary
solutions we also find secondary instabilities described by (Hamiltonian-)Hopf
bifurcations, the usual signature of incipient `breathing' modes. The boundary
conditions can also be used to generate and study helical solutions through
traditional non-magnetic buckling due to compression, twist or whirl.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:0810.366
Passive elasto-magnetic suspensions: nonlinear models and experimental outcomes
The paper presents a passive elasto-magnetic suspension based on rare-earth permanent magnets: the dynamical system is described with theoretical and numerical nonlinear models, whose results are validated through experimental compar- ison. The goal is to minimize the dependence on mass of the natural frequency of a single degree of freedom system. For a system with variable mass, static configuration and dynamical behaviour are compared for classic linear elastic systems, for purely magnetic suspensions and for a combination of the two. In particular the dynamics of the magneto-mechanic inter- action is predicted by use of nonlinear and linearised models and experimentally observed through a suitable single degree of freedom test ri
Characterising gross plastic deformation in design by analysis
An investigation of three simple structures is conducted to identify and characterise the condition of gross plastic deformation in pressure vessel design by analysis. Limit analysis and bilinear hardening plastic analysis is performed for three simple example problems. It is found that previously proposed plastic criteria do not fully represent the effect of the hardening material model on the development of the plastic failure mechanism. A new criterion of plastic collapse based on the curvature of the load–plastic work history is therefore proposed. This is referred to as the Plastic Work Curvature or PWC criterion. It is shown that salient points of curvature correspond to critical stages in the physical evolution of the gross plastic deformation mechanism. The PWC criterion accounts for the effect of the bilinear hardening model on the development of the plastic mechanism and gives an enhanced plastic load when compared to the limit load
