    Word Importance Modeling to Enhance Captions Generated by Automatic Speech Recognition for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Users

    People who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) benefit from sign-language interpreting or live-captioning (with a human transcriptionist), to access spoken information. However, such services are not legally required, affordable, nor available in many settings, e.g., impromptu small-group meetings in the workplace or online video content that has not been professionally captioned. As Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems improve in accuracy and speed, it is natural to investigate the use of these systems to assist DHH users in a variety of tasks. But, ASR systems are still not perfect, especially in realistic conversational settings, leading to the issue of trust and acceptance of these systems from the DHH community. To overcome these challenges, our work focuses on: (1) building metrics for accurately evaluating the quality of automatic captioning systems, and (2) designing interventions for improving the usability of captions for DHH users. The first part of this dissertation describes our research on methods for identifying words that are important for understanding the meaning of a conversational turn within transcripts of spoken dialogue. Such knowledge about the relative importance of words in spoken messages can be used in evaluating ASR systems (in part 2 of this dissertation) or creating new applications for DHH users of captioned video (in part 3 of this dissertation). We found that models which consider both the acoustic properties of spoken words as well as text-based features (e.g., pre-trained word embeddings) are more effective at predicting the semantic importance of a word than models that utilize only one of these types of features. The second part of this dissertation describes studies to understand DHH users\u27 perception of the quality of ASR-generated captions; the goal of this work was to validate the design of automatic metrics for evaluating captions in real-time applications for these users. Such a metric could facilitate comparison of various ASR systems, for determining the suitability of specific ASR systems for supporting communication for DHH users. We designed experimental studies to elicit feedback on the quality of captions from DHH users, and we developed and evaluated automatic metrics for predicting the usability of automatically generated captions for these users. We found that metrics that consider the importance of each word in a text are more effective at predicting the usability of imperfect text captions than the traditional Word Error Rate (WER) metric. The final part of this dissertation describes research on importance-based highlighting of words in captions, as a way to enhance the usability of captions for DHH users. Similar to highlighting in static texts (e.g., textbooks or electronic documents), highlighting in captions involves changing the appearance of some texts in caption to enable readers to attend to the most important bits of information quickly. Despite the known benefits of highlighting in static texts, research on the usefulness of highlighting in captions for DHH users is largely unexplored. For this reason, we conducted experimental studies with DHH participants to understand the benefits of importance-based highlighting in captions, and their preference on different design configurations for highlighting in captions. We found that DHH users subjectively preferred highlighting in captions, and they reported higher readability and understandability scores and lower task-load scores when viewing videos with captions containing highlighting compared to the videos without highlighting. Further, in partial contrast to recommendations in prior research on highlighting in static texts (which had not been based on experimental studies with DHH users), we found that DHH participants preferred boldface, word-level, non-repeating highlighting in captions

    Extracting personal information from conversations

    Personal knowledge is a versatile resource that is valuable for a wide range of downstream applications. Background facts about users can allow chatbot assistants to produce more topical and empathic replies. In the context of recommendation and retrieval models, personal facts can be used to customize the ranking results for individual users. A Personal Knowledge Base, populated with personal facts, such as demographic information, interests and interpersonal relationships, is a unique endpoint for storing and querying personal knowledge. Such knowledge bases are easily interpretable and can provide users with full control over their own personal knowledge, including revising stored facts and managing access by downstream services for personalization purposes. To alleviate users from extensive manual effort to build such personal knowledge base, we can leverage automated extraction methods applied to the textual content of the users, such as dialogue transcripts or social media posts. Mainstream extraction methods specialize on well-structured data, such as biographical texts or encyclopedic articles, which are rare for most people. In turn, conversational data is abundant but challenging to process and requires specialized methods for extraction of personal facts. In this dissertation we address the acquisition of personal knowledge from conversational data. We propose several novel deep learning models for inferring speakers’ personal attributes: • Demographic attributes, age, gender, profession and family status, are inferred by HAMs - hierarchical neural classifiers with attention mechanism. Trained HAMs can be transferred between different types of conversational data and provide interpretable predictions. • Long-tailed personal attributes, hobby and profession, are predicted with CHARM - a zero-shot learning model, overcoming the lack of labeled training samples for rare attribute values. By linking conversational utterances to external sources, CHARM is able to predict attribute values which it never saw during training. • Interpersonal relationships are inferred with PRIDE - a hierarchical transformer-based model. To accurately predict fine-grained relationships, PRIDE leverages personal traits of the speakers and the style of conversational utterances. Experiments with various conversational texts, including Reddit discussions and movie scripts, demonstrate the viability of our methods and their superior performance compared to state-of-the-art baselines.Personengebundene Fakten sind eine vielseitig nutzbare Quelle für die verschiedensten Anwendungen. Eine Personengebundene Wissensdatenbank, gefüllt mit persönlichen Daten wie demografischen Angaben, Interessen und Beziehungen, kann eine universelle Schnittstelle für die Speicherung und Abfrage solcher Fakten sein. Wissensdatenbanken sind leicht zu interpretieren und bieten dem Nutzer die vollständige Kontrolle über seine personenbezogenen Fakten, einschließlich der Überarbeitung und der Verwaltung des Zugriffs durch nachgelagerte Dienste, etwa für Personalisierungszwecke. Um den Nutzern den aufwändigen manuellen Aufbau einer solchen persönlichen Wissensdatenbank zu ersparen, können automatisierte Extraktionsmethoden auf den textuellen Inhalten der Nutzer – wie z.B. Konversationen oder Beiträge in sozialen Medien – angewendet werden. Die üblichen Extraktionsmethoden sind auf strukturierte Daten wie biografische Texte oder enzyklopädische Artikel spezialisiert, die bei den meisten Menschen keine Rolle spielen. In dieser Dissertation beschäftigen wir uns mit der Gewinnung von persönlichem Wissen aus Dialogdaten und schlagen mehrere neuartige Deep-Learning-Modelle zur Ableitung persönlicher Attribute von Sprechern vor: • Demographische Attribute wie Alter, Geschlecht, Beruf und Familienstand werden durch HAMs - Hierarchische Neuronale Klassifikatoren mit Attention-Mechanismus - abgeleitet.     Semantic Interaction in Web-based Retrieval Systems : Adopting Semantic Web Technologies and Social Networking Paradigms for Interacting with Semi-structured Web Data

    Existing web retrieval models for exploration and interaction with web data do not take into account semantic information, nor do they allow for new forms of interaction by employing meaningful interaction and navigation metaphors in 2D/3D. This thesis researches means for introducing a semantic dimension into the search and exploration process of web content to enable a significantly positive user experience. Therefore, an inherently dynamic view beyond single concepts and models from semantic information processing, information extraction and human-machine interaction is adopted. Essential tasks for semantic interaction such as semantic annotation, semantic mediation and semantic human-computer interaction were identified and elaborated for two general application scenarios in web retrieval: Web-based Question Answering in a knowledge-based dialogue system and semantic exploration of information spaces in 2D/3D

    PaperRobot: Incremental Draft Generation of Scientific Ideas

    We present a PaperRobot who performs as an automatic research assistant by (1) conducting deep understanding of a large collection of human-written papers in a target domain and constructing comprehensive background knowledge graphs (KGs); (2) creating new ideas by predicting links from the background KGs, by combining graph attention and contextual text attention; (3) incrementally writing some key elements of a new paper based on memory-attention networks: from the input title along with predicted related entities to generate a paper abstract, from the abstract to generate conclusion and future work, and finally from future work to generate a title for a follow-on paper. Turing Tests, where a biomedical domain expert is asked to compare a system output and a human-authored string, show PaperRobot generated abstracts, conclusion and future work sections, and new titles are chosen over human-written ones up to 30%, 24% and 12% of the time, respectively.Comment: 12 pages.     SMRT Chatbots: Improving Non-Task-Oriented Dialog with Simulated Multiple Reference Training

    Non-task-oriented dialog models suffer from poor quality and non-diverse responses. To overcome limited conversational data, we apply Simulated Multiple Reference Training (SMRT; Khayrallah et al., 2020), and use a paraphraser to simulate multiple responses per training prompt. We find SMRT improves over a strong Transformer baseline as measured by human and automatic quality scores and lexical diversity. We also find SMRT is comparable to pretraining in human evaluation quality, and outperforms pretraining on automatic quality and lexical diversity, without requiring related-domain dialog data.Comment: EMNLP 2020 Camera Read
