Storytelling in the age of the internet: what can we learn from the online narratives of children and young people?

    Get PDF
For a generation whose lives have become digital by default, national borders no longer represent the limits of experiences and actions. Their identities, forged through digitised representations, often develop in transnational online spaces, forming links with other parts of the world in ways that make interconnectedness an integral part of their identities and life stories. For www.parenting.digital, Christina Schachtner discusses her recent book The Narrative Subject and the online narratives of children and young people from Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Children’s online self-representations offer an insight into what moves them, their aspirations and efforts, as well as their worries and fears. Exploring children’s online narratives can help us support them to meet not only the challenges of the digital environment, but also the biographical and social challenges of growing up

Critical dialogues: slow readings of English literary texts

The reader will find gathered together in this volume a selection of articles and essays that have been separately published over the past three decades as a result of my teaching practice and research activity. In chronological terms, they span a period from 1985 until May 2008. These texts were chosen because they are considered to be representative of the type of work I usually do in my classes, undoubtedly as a result of my own academic background, based on a deliberate and specific form of approach to literary texts, my own choice of English authors and, lastly, my most recent interest in inter-art studies.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2014Bassist and composer Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was one of jazz music's most influential and prolific artists. Both his instrumental and compositional abilities were highly regarded during his life, and remain so today. However, current discussions focus more on his composing than soloing, which has led many to overlook his impact on jazz bass and his individual, virtuosic solo style. This shift in focus has weakened Mingus's legacy and made his influence on modern jazz one-sided. By concentrating on Mingus's bass playing, this document seeks to reestablish Mingus's position as an important and influential bassist. This will partly be accomplished by comparing past musicians' opinions with today's historicization of Mingus's bass playing. An extensive analysis of various Mingus solos between 1947 and 1959 will further define Mingus's style, highlight its progressive characteristics, and show his growth as a soloist. Aside from prompting future discussions on Mingus's solo style, the conclusions of this study will strengthen jazz history research by showing how historicization, if left unchecked, can easily lessen an important musician's legacyBiography -- Reception of Mingus's solo style -- Solo analyses -- Conclusio

The Environment in New York State

    Get PDF
This article explores the environmental policy in New York State. Science is significant as a driver of environmental policy, but public opinion is even more important. The story of the New York State\u27s water supply is dominated by the historic quest to supply water to New York City. The State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) has been the most fertile source of environmental litigation in New York State courts. New York\u27s solid waste expenditures have soared as it has had to pay commercial landfills and incinerators to take waste that had previously been cheaply dumped at Fresh Kills. New York began the modern era as a vigorous and innovative leader in environmental protection measures, but since the early 1990s, the paralyzing partisanship in the legislature and inconsistent leadership in the governor\u27s office have moved the state considerably further back in the national pack on many environmental issues

The purpose of the study was to determine how lay directors of works in Jesuits West secondary schools can be formed to best serve as faith leaders. The study consisted of secondary research in which interview data and surveys from studies on lay formation in Jesuit universities and lay leadership of Bay Area Catholic High Schools were used to determine whether or not formation of lay directors of works in faith leadership is possible, what the objectives of that training should be, and how that training can be offered. This analysis determined that lay formation is both possible and necessary. It also found that lay formation should focus on both the interior spiritual lives of the leaders as well as their familiarity with the history, philosophy and jargon of the Jesuits. Programs now exist that successfully accomplish those two goals
