Provisions of Earth Observation data sources for use by a GIS content management system and online marketplace
The objective of this investigation was to provide PIKSEL with EO data sources. Several steps were followed to achieve this goal. The initial phase of the research involved the identification and compilation of EO data sources available. The selection process aimed to encompass a wide range of geospatial, environmental, and climatic data to cater to the diverse needs of the PIKSEL use cases and its users. Subsequently, the EO data available was subjected to an evaluation to determine its relevance to the specific application and objectives of the PIKSEL platform. This assessment considered factors such as data accuracy, spatial and temporal resolution and data format. Once the relevant EO data sources were identified, the next step involved a detailed analysis of the data downloading procedures associated with each source. Each provider often presents unique requirements, access protocols, and data delivery formats, necessitating a thorough understanding of the technical intricacies and obtaining the necessary credentials for data acquisition. To streamline and automate the data retrieval process, a custom Python script was developed for the specific case of the evolution of the coastline. Recognizing the importance of user experience, a user-friendly interface was designed to facilitate straightforward data management. The interface aims to simplify the process of accessing and querying, ensuring that users, irrespective of their technical expertise, can efficiently interact with the platform's resources. However, various hurdles were encountered during the project, including diverse data access procedures, lack of standardization among data channels, and challenges in obtaining and understanding Copernicus data. Despite these challenges, this work presents a valuable resource for non-programming experts seeking to manage EO data with ease. The work also explores future opportunities to expand the platform, integrate other Copernicus services, include diverse relevant sources, and implement the user interface on the PIKSEL website.Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::11 - Ciutats i Comunitats SosteniblesObjectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::13 - Acció per al Clim
Development of real-time investigation technique for nonpoint pollution source distribution using programming interface
Currently both central and local governments that are aware of the importance of conserving rivers, are making continuous efforts to solve the problem of non-point pollution sources (NPS) flowing into rivers. This study established a reactive web service app with a mobile application, to accommodate the need for systematic and scientific investigation and management of NPS. The developed investigation and management techniques incorporate all the PC-based administrative features, thereby improving development efficiency. A prototype of mobile GIS platform for a survey, inspection, and input was proposed, in which data related to pollution source locations and attributes can be effectively collected, stored, updated, and adjusted. To demonstrate, we conducted a quantitative analysis of river pollution source using GPS and GIS to show further details of the framework, which provides geographic information required to develop management technique of NPS flowing into rivers and related parameters in the form of a map. Furthermore, based on the interpolated maps and various environmental factors, the prediction of NPS as well as other parameters can be done. The research will not only improve the efficiency of investigation and management of NPS but also contribute to establishing a management policy, which covers quick decision-making and reaction to inflow accidents
MSUO Information Technology and Geographical Information Systems: Common Protocols & Procedures. Report to the Marine Safety Umbrella Operation
The Marine Safety Umbrella Operation (MSUO) facilitates the cooperation between Interreg
funded Marine Safety Projects and maritime stakeholders. The main aim of MSUO is to
permit efficient operation of new projects through Project Cooperation Initiatives, these
include the review of the common protocols and procedures for Information Technology (IT)
and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
This study carried out by CSA Group and the National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG)
reviews current spatial information standards in Europe and the data management
methodologies associated with different marine safety projects.
International best practice was reviewed based on the combined experience of spatial data
research at NCG and initiatives in the US, Canada and the UK relating to marine security
service information and acquisition and integration of large marine datasets for ocean
management purposes.
This report identifies the most appropriate international data management practices that could
be adopted for future MSUO projects
ICT and the Environment in Developing Countries: an Overview of Opportunities and Developments
Both developed and developing countries face many environmental challenges, including climate change, improving energy efficiency and waste management, addressing air pollution, water quality and scarcity, and loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. Drawing on the existing literature, this paper presents an overview of how the Internet and the ICT and related research communities can help tackle environmental challenges in developing countries. The review focuses on the role of ICTs in climate change mitigation, mitigating other environmental pressures, and climate change adaptation.information and communication technology (ICT), environment, climate change, mitigation, adaptation.
Spatial Impact Network Exposure Model (SINEM) with Integration of Traffic Characteristics and Air Pollution Concentration
The State of Qatar has undergone rapid economic growth and urbanization during the
last few decades. This has resulted in an increase in the number of motor vehicles in the
country. Therefore, it is vital to monitor and manage the air pollution level in Qatar. Trafficrelated
air pollutants generally have a significant contribution to air pollution especially
in urban areas and they also have an adverse impact on the commuters and abutting street
population. Limited study has been carried out in this area and particularly in the context
of Qatar. The purpose of this research is to establish a relationship between air pollution
concentration and a set of parameters related to traffic and network characteristics; such
as traffic volume, speed, VCR, etc. This study aims to develop an area-wide Spatial
Impact Network Exposure Model (SINEM) using Geographic Information System
(GIS). The SINEM shall be developed to assess the area-wide spatial impact of trafficrelated
air pollution exposure based on an aggregated approach. This model helps to
predict the surrounding network exposure index which helps in the decision-making
process. Interestingly, this model also has the potential to scale up as well as convert into
a real-time model. It will assist relevant authorities and decision-makers to identify and
initialize policy measures to reduce the exposure impact, setting up building regulations,
FAR implementation and sustainable master plan development
Conservation science in NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries: description and recent accomplishments
This report describes cases relating to the management of national marine sanctuaries in which certain scientific information was required so managers could make decisions that effectively protected trust resources. The cases presented represent only a fraction of difficult issues that marine sanctuary managers deal with daily. They include, among others, problems related to wildlife disturbance, vessel routing, marine reserve placement, watershed management, oil spill response, and habitat restoration. Scientific approaches to address these problems vary significantly, and include literature surveys, data mining, field studies (monitoring, mapping, observations, and measurement), geospatial and biogeographic analysis, and modeling. In most cases there is also an element of expert consultation and collaboration among multiple partners, agencies with resource protection responsibilities, and other users and stakeholders. The resulting management responses may involve direct intervention (e.g., for spill response or habitat restoration issues), proposal of boundary alternatives for marine sanctuaries or reserves, changes in agency policy or regulations, making recommendations to other agencies with resource protection responsibilities, proposing changes to international or domestic shipping rules, or development of new education or outreach programs.
