    SenseLE:Exploiting spatial locality in decentralized sensing environments

    Generally, smart devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, or fitness trackers, communicate with each other indirectly, via cloud data centers. Sharing sensor data with a cloud data center as intermediary invokes transmission methods with high battery costs, such as 4G LTE or WiFi. By sharing sensor information locally and without intermediaries, we can use other transmission methods with low energy cost, such as Bluetooth or BLE. In this paper, we introduce Sense Low Energy (SenseLE), a decentralized sensing framework which exploits the spatial locality of nearby sensors to save energy in Internet-of-Things (IoT) environments. We demonstrate the usability of SenseLE by building a real-life application for estimating waiting times at queues. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance and resource utilization of our SenseLE Android implementation for different sensing scenarios. Our empirical evaluation shows that by exploiting spatial locality, SenseLE is able to reduce application response times (latency) by up to 74% and energy consumption by up to 56%

    Sensing as a service: A cloud computing system for mobile phone sensing

    Sensors on (or attached to) mobile phones can enable attractive sensing applications in different domains such as environmental monitoring, social networking, healthcare, etc. We introduce a new concept, Sensing-as-a-Service (S2aaS), i.e., providing sensing services using mobile phones via a cloud computing system. An S2aaS cloud should meet the following requirements: 1) It must be able to support various mobile phone sensing applications on different smartphone platforms. 2) It must be energy-efficient. 3) It must have effective incentive mechanisms that can be used to attract mobile users to participate in sensing activities. In this paper, we identify unique challenges of designing and implementing an S2aaS cloud, review existing systems and methods, present viable solutions, and point out future research directions

    Crowd-ML: A Privacy-Preserving Learning Framework for a Crowd of Smart Devices

    Smart devices with built-in sensors, computational capabilities, and network connectivity have become increasingly pervasive. The crowds of smart devices offer opportunities to collectively sense and perform computing tasks in an unprecedented scale. This paper presents Crowd-ML, a privacy-preserving machine learning framework for a crowd of smart devices, which can solve a wide range of learning problems for crowdsensing data with differential privacy guarantees. Crowd-ML endows a crowdsensing system with an ability to learn classifiers or predictors online from crowdsensing data privately with minimal computational overheads on devices and servers, suitable for a practical and large-scale employment of the framework. We analyze the performance and the scalability of Crowd-ML, and implement the system with off-the-shelf smartphones as a proof of concept. We demonstrate the advantages of Crowd-ML with real and simulated experiments under various conditions

    VoteLab: A Modular and Adaptive Experimentation Platform for Online Collective Decision Making

    Digital democracy and new forms for direct digital participation in policy making gain unprecedented momentum. This is particularly the case for preferential voting methods and decision-support systems designed to promote fairer, more inclusive and legitimate collective decision-making processes in citizens assemblies, participatory budgeting and elections. However, a systematic human experimentation with different voting methods is cumbersome and costly. This paper introduces VoteLab, an open-source and thoroughly-documented platform for modular and adaptive design of voting experiments. It supports to visually and interactively build reusable campaigns with a choice of different voting methods, while voters can easily respond to subscribed voting questions on a smartphone. A proof-of-concept with four voting methods and questions on COVID-19 in an online lab experiment have been used to study the consistency of voting outcomes. It demonstrates the capability of VoteLab to support rigorous experimentation of complex voting scenarios

    Platform for efficient switching between multiple devices in the intensive care unit

    Introduction: This article is part of the Focus Theme of Methods of Information in Medicine on "Managing Interoperability and Complexity in Health Systems". Objectives: Handheld computers, such as tablets and smartphones, are becoming more and more accessible in the clinical care setting and in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). By making the most useful and appropriate data available on multiple devices and facilitate the switching between those devices, staff members can efficiently integrate them in their workflow, allowing for faster and more accurate decisions. This paper addresses the design of a platform for the efficient switching between multiple devices in the ICU. The key functionalities of the platform are the integration of the platform into the workflow of the medical staff and providing tailored and dynamic information at the point of care. Methods: The platform is designed based on a 3-tier architecture with a focus on extensibility, scalability and an optimal user experience. After identification to a device using Near Field Communication (NFC), the appropriate medical information will be shown on the selected device. The visualization of the data is adapted to the type of the device. A web-centric approach was used to enable extensibility and portability. Results: A prototype of the platform was thoroughly evaluated. The scalability, performance and user experience were evaluated. Performance tests show that the response time of the system scales linearly with the amount of data. Measurements with up to 20 devices have shown no performance loss due to the concurrent use of multiple devices. Conclusions: The platform provides a scalable and responsive solution to enable the efficient switching between multiple devices., Due to the web-centric approach new devices can easily be integrated. The performance and scalability of the platform have been evaluated and it was shown that the response time and scalability of the platform was within an acceptable range

    Various flavours of a new research field on (socio-)physical or personal analytics have emerged, with the goal of deriving semanticallyrich insights from people’s low-level physical sensing combined with their (online) social interactions. In this paper, we argue for more comprehensive data sources, including environmental and application-specific data, to better capture the interactions between users and their context, in addition to those among users. We provide some example use cases and present our ongoing work towards a synergistic analytics platform: a testbed based on mobile crowdsensing and IoT, a data model for representing the different sources of data and their connections, and a prediction engine for analyzing the data and producing insights
