Spatial scales of interactions among bacteria and between bacteria and the leaf surface.

Microbial life on plant leaves is characterized by a multitude of interactions between leaf colonizers and their environment. While the existence of many of these interactions has been confirmed, their spatial scale or reach often remained unknown. In this study, we applied spatial point pattern analysis to 244 distribution patterns of Pantoea agglomerans and Pseudomonas syringae on bean leaves. The results showed that bacterial colonizers of leaves interact with their environment at different spatial scales. Interactions among bacteria were often confined to small spatial scales up to 5-20 μm, compared to interactions between bacteria and leaf surface structures such as trichomes which could be observed in excess of 100 μm. Spatial point-pattern analyses prove a comprehensive tool to determine the different spatial scales of bacterial interactions on plant leaves and will help microbiologists to better understand the interplay between these interactions

Foliage Plants for Improving Indoor Air Quality

    Get PDF
NASA's research with foliage houseplants during the past 10 years has produced a new concept in indoor air quality improvement. This new and exciting technology is quite simple. Both plant leaves and roots are utilized in removing trace levels of toxic vapors from inside tightly sealed buildings. Low levels of chemicals such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde can be removed from indoor environments by plant leaves alone, while higher concentrations of numerous toxic chemicals can be removed by filtering indoor air through the plant roots surrounded by activated carbon. The activated carbon absorbs large quantities of the toxic chemicals and retains them until the plant roots and associated microorganisms degrade and assimilate these chemicals

Terahertz Characterisation of Living Plant Leaves for Quality of Life Assessment Applications

    Get PDF
This paper presents preliminary results on employing Terahertz (THz) technology for measuring the water contents of leaves. The main purpose of this work is to highlight transmission constraints of terahertz radiation through the plants in the THz frequency region. Multiple leaves of plants are examined using the THz Swissto12 system, and the effect of thickness and water contents on transmission loss and attenuation are observed at different frequency regions, which can lead to meaningful information to study and analyse the existence of any pesticides in leaves with terahertz frequencies. The results of this paper pave the way for applicability of terahertz frequencies for sensing the quality of life in plants

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air and vegetation: case study at three selected toll stations along North South Expressway in Johor, Malaysia

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from vehicular emission are products of the incomplete combustion of organic fuel, and are usually attached to the particulate matter from the emission and can caused pollution and hazard to human health due to its carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic characteristics. The objective of this study is i) to determine the concentration PAHs in the air of sampling area, ii) to determine the concentration PAHs in vegetation, iii) to determine the relationship of concentration of PAHs in plants and air of sampling area and iv) to study the different composition of PAHs in different species of plants to determine the potential biomonitoring agent. The study is carried out at three toll stations along PLUS’ North-South Expressway in Johor. Air sample and plant leaves sample collected were extracted with ultrasonic agitation in dichloromethane and fractionated according to polarity before submitted to gas chromatography – mass spectrometry analysis to determine the concentration of the PAHs compounds. Spearman’s rank correlation test was carried out using SPSS to determine the correlation between concentration of PAHs in air and plant leaves sample. Seven PAHs were identified and quantified in the atmospheric sample and plant leaves sample. Those PAHs were acenaphtylene (ACN), phenanthrene (PHE), fluorene (FL), pyrene (PY), chrysene (CHR), benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Significant correlation at 0.05 level (2-tailed) was observed in samples of Ficus microcarpa, Cordyline fruticosa, Hibiscus spp., and Ixora coccinea with the value 0.622, 0.643, 0.680 and 0.608 respectively. The positive correlation shows that the plants have capabilities to absorb organic pollutants from the environment. Based from this research, the most suitable species to be introduced into the environment as a biomonitoring agent and to be further studied as a medium for low and medium level pollution bioremediation is Ficus microcarpa, Cordyline fruticosa, and Ixora coccine

DETERMINANTS OF UTILIZATION AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COLLECTION AND SALES OF FOREST PLANT LEAVES IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Determinants of participation in the collection and sales of forest plant leaves in Ogun state were investigated. Multistage sampling procedure was employed to select three hundred (300) respondents for the study. A structure questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, logit regression and budgetary analysis. The logit regression analysis results showed that the likelihood of utilization of the forest plant leaves is significantly determined by nature of the respondents occupation (farming and NTFPs) and their household size while the likelihood of participation in the collection and sales of forest plant leaves is significantly determined by nearness to the forest plant leaves, income realized from the leaves and gender. Sales of leaves were profitable with an average net profit of N14,179.17/month/respondent. Enlighten programs on forest plant leaves activities as means of livelihood and alleviation of poverty should be embarked upon for rural folks. &nbsp

The sensitivity of plant tissue culture and plant cell of citrullus lanatus cv. round dragon against basta®

    Get PDF
Current study provides an efficient screening system for transformed plant of Citrullus lanatus cv. Round Dragon harboring bar gene. The untransformed 5-day-old cotyledon explants were cultured on the shoot-inducing media supplemented with Basta® (0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg L-1) and without Basta® for 3 weeks and subcultured on fresh shoot-inducing media with the same media composition for another 3 weeks. The shoot growth on the cotyledon decreased, as the Basta® concentration increased. A complete inhibition of shoot growth was observed on growth medium supplemented with 2.0 and 3.0 mg L-1 of Basta®, respectively. For ex vitro condition, untransformed healthy plant leaves (derived from acclimatized in vitro plantlets) were leaf painted with an aqueous solution of Basta® at the concentration of 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1% (v/v) using writing brush. The sensitivity of untransformed plant tissues were evaluated based on tissue browning and necrosis due to herbicidal damage. Healthy plant leaves subjected to leaf painting assay showed serious necrotic within 3 days at the concentration of 0.1% (v/v) of Basta®. An efficient herbicide Basta® selection mode has been established via in vitro and ex vitro conditions of untransformed Citrullus lanatus cv. Round Dragon
